EPISODE5:- THE NIGHT OF BROKEN LIGHTS

710 Words
The Silver Heights Hotel had never looked grander. Crystal chandeliers sparkled, waiters in black suits hurried with silver trays, and a banner above the lobby read in elegant gold: “Employee of the Month Award Ceremony – Honoring Leo Grayson.” Leo stood behind the service hallway door, tightening his tie — the first one he’d worn in months. The last thing he wanted was this spotlight, but the hotel board had refused his objections. They said it was good for publicity. He had tried to stop it quietly. Earlier that day, he’d called Hawk. “Don’t let this get out of control,” Leo had said. “Understood, sir,” Hawk replied. “We’ll manage it discreetly.” Leo hadn’t asked how — he trusted Hawk. Maybe too much. The hall was already filled with journalists, cameras flashing like lightning as guests murmured about “the humble janitor who saved a life.” Clara found him near the back door. “You look nervous,” she teased softly. “I am,” he admitted. “I’m not used to being thanked.” She smiled. “Then maybe it’s time you were.” A staff member waved from the stage. “Leo! You’re up next!” He took a deep breath and stepped into the bright lights. Applause thundered. The manager handed him a glass plaque. “Mr. Grayson,” the manager said proudly, “your bravery and humility remind us that true heroes are among us.” Leo opened his mouth to speak — and then the lights flickered. A murmur rippled through the room. The chandelier above the stage blinked twice, then went dark. The microphones cut off with a sharp buzz. “Is this part of the show?” someone whispered. Another voice shouted, “Hey! The power’s gone!” Within seconds, the entire lobby plunged into confusion. Guests shouted. Cameras flashed wildly. Emergency lights flickered to life, casting red shadows across the hall. Leo’s phone buzzed in his pocket — a coded text from Hawk: “System override in progress. Containment failed. Evacuate immediately.” Containment? Leo’s heart lurched. “Hawk, what did you do?” he muttered under his breath. He glanced toward the security room at the far end of the hall — the door stood open, screens flickering. Sparks flew from a panel. Smoke hissed. Hotel alarms wailed to life, shrill and panicked. Guests screamed and scrambled toward the exits, glasses shattering as the crowd surged. Clara grabbed Leo’s arm. “Leo, what’s happening?” “I don’t know,” he said, pulling her close to shield her from the rushing crowd. The manager shouted for calm, but it was no use. The elegant ceremony had turned into a stampede of chaos. Minutes later, the building’s backup power finally restored. The chandeliers glowed again, revealing the aftermath — overturned chairs, spilled wine, scattered awards, and frightened guests huddled in corners. In the middle of it all stood Leo, his shirt torn, breathing hard, holding Clara’s hand. The hotel’s board members glared from across the room, furious and confused. “What happened to our system?” one demanded. “Everything shut down at once!” another snapped. “It’s as if someone hijacked our controls!” Leo’s phone vibrated again — another message from Hawk: “Apologies, sir. Our interference collided with hotel security. Exposure prevented, but collateral damage unavoidable.” He clenched his jaw. “You call this unavoidable?” he whispered. The next morning, headlines exploded online: “Award Ceremony Turns to Chaos — Hotel Faces Investigation.” “Hero Janitor’s Night of Disaster.” The same people who had called him a hero yesterday now called him unlucky. Leo sat in his small apartment, staring at the screen, the blue glow of his phone washing over his face. He whispered bitterly, “I tried to stay invisible, and somehow I made the loudest noise in the room.” He leaned back, running a hand through his hair. Somewhere across the city, Hawk was already clearing traces of their communication, covering digital footprints. But Leo knew one thing with chilling certainty — the world was beginning to notice him. And once the world starts to notice, it never stops.
