  Lyra lowered her lashes, her voice shy, carefully molded for Damon’s ears. “If… if it’s all right, I’d rather skip the audition. I don’t want to leave Caleb alone.”   Her words were soft, tender, a perfect picture of selflessness. But Hannah’s response was immediate, her tone firm. “You can’t, Lyra. If you’re late, the director will be furious. This isn’t something you can afford to miss.”   Lyra’s shoulders slumped, her lips curving in a defeated smile. The act was flawless, and Damon’s heart softened at the sight.   “Don’t worry,” Damon said gently, his deep voice steady. “I’ll stay. I’ll look after Caleb myself. And if the director has an issue, I’ll handle it.”   Lyra turned to him, her expression glowing with gratitude, eyes shining as though his words had lifted a great burden.
