Chapter Four

1485 Words
(Amara's POV) I didn't sleep, not even for a second. I stayed on the edge of the bed the entire night with my back straight and my eyes fixed on the door like it might open at any moment. Every small sound made my heart jump, every shift of air felt like a warning. The silence in the room was suffocating, too controlled, too deliberate…..just like him. It was like even the quiet was planned. This place didn't feel real. It didn't feel like somewhere people lived. Rather, it felt like somewhere people were kept. I exhaled slowly and pressed my hands together to stop them from shaking. Panicking wasn't going to help me. If anything, it would make things worse. I needed to think, to stay calm and figure out a way out of this before I completely lost control. My gaze moved around the room again, much slower this time but more observant. Everything was perfectly arranged….the bed, the furniture, the soft lighting that gave nothing away. There were no personal touches, no signs of warmth. Just order and control. Just like him. I stood up after a while, my legs slightly stiff, and walked toward the door. For a moment, I just stared at the handle, knowing what I would find but I had to try anyway. When I turned it, it didn't budge. It was locked. Of course it was. A quiet breath left me as I stepped back with my jaw tightening. I shouldn't have expected anything different. My eyes moved toward the window next, and for a brief second, something like hope flickered inside me...maybe I could leave here after all. I crossed the room quickly and pulled the curtain aside, but the moment I looked out, that hope disappeared just as fast. We were too high up. Far too high for me to jump down. The ground below looked distant and unreachable. There was no balcony, no ledge, absolutely nothing I could use to climb down. Even if I tried, I wouldn't make it. I let the curtain fall back into place and i stepped away. My chest tightened as the reality of my situation settled in. There were no doors, no windows and no way out of here. It was worse than a prison because the only crime I had committed was saving a man's life. The sound of the lock turning broke me out of my thoughts and my entire body went still. The door handle moved, and before I could react, the door opened. He walked in like nothing had changed. Like I hadn't spent the entire night trapped in a room that felt more like a cage than a bedroom. Like this was normal. Like I was supposed to be here. My heart started racing again, faster and louder this time. "You didn't sleep," he said, his voice calm, his eyes already on me. It wasn't a question. I straightened slightly, forcing myself not to look as shaken as I felt. "You locked me in," I replied. "What did you expect?" His expression didn't change….not one bit. "If you had tried to leave, you would have been stopped." A cold shiver ran down my spine. "So you admit it," I said, holding his gaze. "I'm a prisoner." "No," he said simply causing me to frown. "You're here because I want you here." He continued like it was the most normal thing in the world. My stomach tightened. "That's not any better." "Maybe not," he said. "But it's the truth." The way he said it so calmly made it worse. Everything about him made it worse. I took a breath, trying to steady myself. "You still haven't told me who you are." For a moment, he didn't respond. He just looked at me, like he was weighing something in his mind. Probably if he should tell me or not. "You don't need to know that," he said eventually. "I do if you're keeping me here," I shot back before I could stop myself. Something shifted in his gaze. It wasn't anger or irritation, it was something more focused like he was trying to figure me out. He took a step closer to me and my breath caught before I could stop it. Instinctively, I stepped back and he noticed...he noticed everything. "My name," he said slowly, "is not something people say lightly." "That doesn't even make sense," I replied, my brows pulling together. "It will," he replied calmly. He took another step closer but i held my ground this time, even though every instinct in me was telling me to move. "Does it scare you?" he asked. "Yes," I said honestly. There was no point lying to him. I had a feeling he could see right through me. He studied me for a moment, and for the first time, I saw something different in his expression. "Good," he said. The word sent a strange mix of anger and unease through me. "You think this is a game?" I asked, my voice tightening in anger. "You take me from my life, lock me up in your house, refuse to explain anything…..and I'm supposed to just accept it?" "I expect you to understand your situation," he replied. "And what situation is that?" I challenged. "That you don't leave unless I say so." The certainty in his voice hit harder than anything else he had said. "You don't get to decide that," I said, even though my voice wasn't as steady as before. "I already have."He replied with a sly smile. The room fell silent for a while. Neither of us not daring to make a sound. I looked away first, hating that I did, hating the way he made me feel like I had no control here. "Why me?" I asked quietly. "Out of everyone in that hospital, why me?" He didn't answer right away. Instead, his gaze dropped to my wrist….the same spot he had grabbed that night….before returning to my eyes. "Because you didn't hesitate," he said. I frowned slightly. "What does that mean?" "You didn't question anything," he continued. "You didn't pull back. You didn't look afraid. You just did what needed to be done." "That's my job," I said. "It's more than that." He replied with that same calmness that unerves me. The way he said it made something shift inside me. "And now?" I asked, my voice quieter. "Now," he said, stepping just a little closer, "you're here." My heart picked up again. "You keep saying that like it explains everything," I muttered. "It does," he replied. I shook my head. "No, it doesn't. You don't just take someone's life because you feel like it—" "I didn't take it," he cut in. My breath caught in my throat. "I redirected it."he continues. "That's not your choice to make," I said, but there was less conviction in my voice now. "It is now." I swallowed, trying to push past the fear building in my chest. "People will come looking for me," I said. "They won't," he replied immediately. "You don't know that." "I do." Something in his tone made my stomach twist…..like he was so sure that I had no one. "What did you do?" I asked slowly. A faint smile touched his lips. "Nothing you need to worry about." He replied. He was hiding something. Every corner of this house screamed secrets. He turned to leave like the conversation was over, like I had no more questions left to ask. "Wait," I said quickly. He paused in his tracks. My fingers curled slightly at my sides. "You can't just walk away after all this." He looked back at me, calm as ever. "And what would you like me to do?" I hesitated because I didn't even know what I wanted anymore. Answers? My freedom? "Tell me your name," I managed to make out after a while. There was a long pause before finally... "Rafael." The name settled into the room in a way I couldn't explain. "Rafael…" I repeated quietly. His gaze sharpened slightly as his name rolled off my lips. "Don't say it like that." "Like what?" I asked. "Like it belongs to you." My heart skipped a bit. "It doesn't," he added. I swallowed hard in fear. "Then what does?" I asked before I could stop myself. Something darker flickered in his eyes. "You," he said. My breath caught in my throat and my heart began to pound faster. Before I could respond, he turned and walked toward the door. "Wait—Rafael—" He stopped, just for a second, and looked back at me. "Don't test my patience, Amara," he said calmly. Then he walked out and locked the door behind him again leaving me alone. But this time, It didn't feel the same because now I knew his name. And somehow… That made everything worse
