Chapter 3– A Different Identity

The Nature of the Life She Inherited The late afternoon sunlight poured into the penthouse in a warm, deceptive gold, but Evie felt none of its comfort. Two hours had passed since the VIP lobby at Starforge Tower. She'd left the gala preparations behind, retreating to the sanctuary of Evelyn Hart's meticulously curated apartment. Her fingers traced the edge of the personal safe, heart tightening. She pulled out a thick, heavy contract—not Starforge documents, not corporate crime evidence—but something far more personal: EXCLUSIVE INVESTIGATIVE SERVICE & MEDIA MANIPULATION AGREEMENT Evie's stomach twisted. Memories of Evelyn Hart—the sharp, intelligent, warm-hearted reporter she had glimpsed in fragments—clashed violently with the words on the page. Evelyn Hart had a dark side hidden beneath the veneer: A professional smear journalist. A weapon paid to destroy reputations. Target: Aiden Cross, Starforge's most prominent artist. Assignment: Find or fabricate damaging information. Payment: A sum that would make any legitimate investigative reporter's jaw drop. Evie pressed the paper to her chest, swallowing hard. She had always lived for the truth. Now she was in the body of someone who sold lies. Envelopes of cash in dim parking lots. Articles filled with insinuations. Tears wiped away quickly, swallowed by ambition. And beneath it all—Mia Hart. Evelyn's sister. The reason everything had twisted. Too logical. Too guarded. Willing to do anything to protect the one person she loved. Evie whispered, almost to herself, "This isn't me… but I have to survive this world. And I have to find the truth." The Clash in the Lobby 7:00 PM — Starforge Tower. Evie stepped out of her rented car in a sharp black suit. Inside her bag were the micro-recording devices designed by Dr. Rowan Hale. The lobby glowed with black marble and crystal — Starforge's signature opulence. Then the cameras turned. "Evelyn Hart! Look this way!" Evie froze. She recognized him instantly: Caleb Fox, a notorious paparazzi and Evelyn's direct rival. He strode toward her, sharp-eyed and predatory. "Quick move, Hart. You're here for Aiden Cross too?" Evie kept her expression neutral. In Evelyn's memories, Caleb was aggressive but far from foolish. "Fox," she replied coolly. "Starforge booked me exclusively. You're wasting your time." Caleb tilted his head slightly, stepping closer. "Cut the act. You're not here for Aiden. You're sniffing around Hale." Evie stiffened. He shouldn't know that. "What nonsense are you talking about?" she said calmly. Caleb smirked. "That dirty contract of yours? It leaked. The organization behind it doesn't want a smear piece. They want you to plant evidence on Aiden to take down someone bigger: Richard Hale." Evie froze. Caleb knew too much. Yet he didn't threaten her — he warned her. "Watch yourself, Hart. Hale isn't someone you can toy with." He walked away, leaving Evie with a chilling realization: Evelyn's world was far more tangled than she imagined. Negotiation With Lena Cooper Evie entered the VIP area. Lena Cooper — Aiden's notoriously difficult manager — waited with a disapproving expression. "You're two minutes late," Lena snapped. "Caleb Fox ambushed me," Evie replied. "He caught the scent of something." Lena examined her sharply. "I don't trust you, Hart. You work for whoever pays more." "That's exactly why you hired me," Evie said. "I just need thirty minutes alone with Aiden after the event. No managers. No script." Lena's expression hardened. "He has a full schedule. You won't meet him privately." Evie met her eyes. "Unless you want a little article about Starforge's 'charity funds' slipping into a certain manager's private accounts?" Lena went still. A rumor — never verified — but her reaction said everything. "You have no evidence," Lena replied, voice tight. "Dirty journalists don't need evidence." After a tense moment, Lena exhaled in defeat. "Fine. After the press event, I'll consider it. But if you're working for the other side… I'll ruin you myself." "Understood." Evie walked away with a small victory — and a reminder that Evelyn Hart's filthy reputation could be a weapon when needed. The Wall of Ice (Unbroken for Now) Evie was escorted to the holding area outside Aiden Cross's private room. Through the frosted glass, she saw only the silhouette of a man — tall, poised, constantly on guard. But just as the assistant reached for the door, Lena's phone buzzed. She glanced at the message, her face darkening. "Aiden needs to prep for the stage now. Your thirty minutes — postponed." Her tone was tight, uneasy. "You'll meet him after the press event. If the schedule allows." Evie nodded. A mix of disappointment — and relief. Aiden Cross, the biggest star in the world, would still be her first encounter in the next chapter. The Real Evelyn Hart Back at the penthouse, Evie sifted through everything Caleb had revealed. Memories connected. Had Evelyn been cooperating with Caleb? Investigating Hale? Was her dirty-contract persona just a cover? She dug deeper. A memory flickered— Mia Hart. Her voice: "If anything happens, you'll know where to look." Evie rose abruptly and rushed to the bathroom. The large mirror… something about it felt wrong. Something Evelyn would see every morning — but never touch. Evie pressed the metal edge. A soft click. A hidden compartment slid open. Inside lay a fountain-pen–shaped USB stick. Her hands trembled as she pulled it out. FOR MIA – ONLY IF I DON'T RETURN The laptop scanned Evelyn's fingerprint — which Evie now shared. One folder. Three files. FILE_A_X.PDF The dirty contract — and evidence of payments from the secret organization. MIA_TRUST.DOC A legal document protecting Mia from future financial claims. VIDEO_FINAL_MESSAGE.MOV Evie clicked it. Evelyn Hart's real face appeared — exhausted, determined. The Final Message "If you're watching this, Evie… it means I didn't make it back." Her voice was steady. "I'm sorry for what you've seen. The corruption, the lies. I had to build this persona. Richard Hale is hiding something far worse — a mind-control program codenamed Project Chimera. I've already passed a copy to someone Hale would never suspect: Caleb Fox." Evie froze. Caleb… held the key? "The dirty contract was bait. Hale thinks I'm corrupt. It keeps Mia safe. But you're different. You need to keep the cover. Change your approach. Build new angles. Whatever you do — don't let Hale know you're searching for the truth." Evelyn looked straight into the camera. "Protect Aiden. And protect Mia." The screen went black. Evie inhaled sharply. She hadn't only inherited Evelyn's body — She had inherited her mission. She lifted her phone and scrolled to Caleb Fox's number. "Fox," Evie said, voice steady. "We need to meet. Right now. I have an offer you won't refuse."
