CARSON
Looking over my shoulder just when the ambulance pulled up to the pack hospital.
The training grounds became quiet and everyone stopped what they were doing and stared.
I growled, turning back around. "Get back to training. There is nothing for you to see."
Everyone went back to training, while some kept on staring. This is not what I wanted.
Looking over to Zain, I motioned to the pack hospital. "Come on, Jenny and Josh just pulled up too. We need to make sure everyone is okay."
Zain nodded, and we both walked away while leaving the trainers to deal with the other pack members.
As we approached the ambulance, Lynx was on high alert and pacing.
"What's wrong?" I asked him, but he ignored me.
Great, he is acting weird again.
Ignoring him, I walked into the hospital and noticed Jenny standing with a doctor looking frightened. "I need to see her," she pleaded.
I walked up to them. "What's going on?"
The door to the room opened, and the scent that wafted out and hit me like a ton of bricks; it smelt intoxicating, while also smothering me. It smelt of lavender.
The doctor was talking, but I didn't hear a thing. My eyes were glued to the door.
Lynx growled, which made me shake my head and look back at the doctor. "What did you just say?" I asked the doctor, making him look at me with a weird expression but then sighed.
"It seems she suffered a head injury when she had the accident. I have placed her in an induced coma for now as she was screaming in pain."
I nodded.
"What happens now?" I asked, looking toward the door.
"We are going to give her some scans and run tests, then we can decide from there," he said, glancing at Jenny and then back at me.
"Okay," Jenny whispered.
I glanced at her, but her eyes were on the door I had been staring at moments ago.
The doctor moved away, while we stood there like lemons.
"They won't let me see her," she said with a whimper, not looking at me.
"Sweetheart," Josh’s voice came, but then a little voice echoed not far behind him. "Mummy," Alec and Ethan shouted, heading toward them.
Jenny shook her head, and tears started to flow. Josh came up to her and comforted his mate, with their kids too, who wrapped their arms around Jenny’s waist while I was trying to figure out what the hell had happened to me moments ago.
I looked back at Lynx, who had a worried face. "What's wrong?" I asked. He was about to say something, but the scent cut us off.
Looking back toward the door, I stared at two nurses who were pushing a bed out of the room. There in the bed was the most beautiful sight I had ever seen; she looked like an angel.
"Mate!”" Lynx shouted.
Wait what? I looked back at him, shocked.
"Mate!" he yelled, jumping slightly and looking happy.
I looked toward the bed again when the nurses wheeled her away. Her face was pale, but she looked familiar to me.
I watched as they turned the corner.
"Mate!" I whispered, trying to sound out the word till gasps could be heard by the side of me. I forgot I wasn’t alone, but I didn’t care. I had finally found her.
"What did you say?" Jenny whispered.
Licking my lips, I ignored her and kept my eyes on the bed till they wheeled her away.
I cleared my throat. "Mate," I said, looking back at Jenny. “She’s, my mate.”
Jenny said nothing, only she walked toward me and searched my face. "Are you sure," she said, scanning my face.
I nodded with a frown.
"Yes, Lynx called mate when she was wheeled out."
I stared at Jenny, but her face fell.
"No! No! No! This can’t be happening," she said as she stepped back and looked at me, shaking her head. "She's my daughter; I just got her back."
I looked at her. Her daughter? Then it hit me; her daughter was in the ambulance. Her scent was in there, and when Jenny returned home the other day, she must have gotten her scent on her from when she went to see her at the hospital when she had the call from her about her accident.
Well, that explains why Lynx had been acting weird, which made him huff but not say anything.
"Alpha Carson," Josh said, pulling me back from my thoughts and I looked at him.
"Alpha, you may have to wait awhile; she was in a pissed-off mood when she wakes up as she didn't even know she is here yet, and not only that, she and Jenny had to get on track. Not to mention her age too."
I frowned.
Josh placed his hand on my shoulder and stared at me. "She's your mate; I get it. But she doesn't know anything about us, and not only that, but she has also just lost her father. She will be a mess. You must give her some time, and you must do it the human way first."
Lynx groaned but didn't move. I knew he wanted to see her, but we had to wait.
I looked toward Jenny, who was sitting down on a chair, sobbing, and being comforted by a nurse.
Fuck, this can’t be happening.
I let out a sigh. "I know, I will keep my distance and wait till things have settled."
Jenny looked up and gave me a knowing smile.
I felt for her, but this was going to be hard, especially with Lynx. Walking over to Jenny, I sat next to her while everyone took seats around the waiting room. I leaned back and rested my head on the wall.
"She will be fine," Jenny whispered, which I think was her way of reassuring herself. I turned to look at her. Her eyes met mine. "She was mad that I wasn't giving her the month with her friend," she said and looked down. "She was mad at me anyway; she may not want anything to do with me."
I placed my hand on hers and smiled. "She will be fine. And as for the other stuff, didn't you tell me once that everything takes time to heal."
Jenny stared at me and nodded. A small smile slid across her lips. "You remembered," she said.
I nodded.
After my father died, I was in a mess and ran into the forest to escape. Everyone went to search for me; but it was Jenny who had found me by the lake and sat with me. She never called anyone to tell them where I was. She listened as I cried and rumbled on about losing my dad. But something hit me; at the time, Jenny looked like she had lost someone close to her, and now thinking about it, she lost her daughter. After a while, Jenny took me back and Josh helped me with the pack. But after that night, Jenny left the pack to go back. No one understood why she did, but now everything made perfect sense.
Jenny wiped her eyes and looked toward the hospital entrance; her eyes widened. I looked to where she was looking, and there stood her parents.
"Mum," she whispered. "Dad."
They looked around, and their eyes landed on me. They bowed. "Alpha," they said together.
I nodded but didn't say anything.
I watched as Jenny's mum walked up and placed her hand in hers. "I'm sorry, Jen," she whispered. "Is she okay?"
Jenny didn't say anything; she shrugged.
Josh explained everything to them, while Jenny's mum sat next to her on the other side while her father was leaning against the wall; his face was neutral, but something was there that I couldn’t read. Even Lynx couldn't work out what.
We all sat around, but Zain looked at me and then opened a link to me. "I told the trainers all training will commence at the same time every day now," he said and looked to the corner, then back to me.
I knew he wanted to discuss what he heard.
"She's my mate," I told him. He kept his face blank. "I'm going to need your help with her. I have no idea what the hell I need to do."
"I will and will go to the office and get some paperwork done there. I might have a little snoop at what Lucian has given us and find some things out about her. Maybe check her social media, try to get something for you to know more about her till you are ready to talk to her."
I stared at him, but he frowned. "I mean, I will find out what she likes and what she does for fun.”
"Okay, keep this between us; I’ll be having difficulty claiming her as it is." That part was true since there were other factors to consider, but I didn’t want to worry about that or them just yet.
Zain nodded and shut the link down.
I was back to the silence, while worry and concern lingered in the air. Everyone wanted to know more, we just have to wait till we could see her.
