CHAPTER 6: BREAKING THROUGH

1623 Words
As I made my way back to the secret stone building where I'd last seen Ronan, the night was calm and the forest appeared darker than before. Even though my heart was racing, I knew I had to have courage. Whatever evil force Lyra possessed over him, I couldn't abandon him. I walked inside, holding my breath as I carefully slipped through a tiny breach in the wall. The room was eerily silent, and the air seemed cold and heavy. There was an altar in the middle of the room, covered in eerie, dark markings that I couldn't make out. It appeared to be surrounded by dancing shadows. "This location what is it?" I uttered a barely audible murmur. A chill went down my spine and my skin pricked with fear. As my eyes adjusted to the low light, I took a closer look. The walls were covered with strange carvings that made my stomach turn, including images of moons and wolves. When my palm touched one of the carvings, it was icy almost scorching. "Dark magic." With my thoughts racing, I whispered to myself. Although I had heard tales of evil magic, I never imagined that I would witness it. Then I noticed a necklace resting on the altar, which chilled me to the bone. Ronan owned it. Since I'd known him, he had worn it every day. What brought it here? "Ronan... What's going on with you? I muttered, a mixture of fear and resolve. I heard footsteps as I was about to reach for the jewellery. With my heart racing, I froze. Someone was on their way. I hurriedly pressed myself into the darkness and crouched behind a big pillar. Lyra's footsteps reverberated against the stone floor as she entered the room. She appeared composed, almost happy, as though she was an expert at what she was doing. "You believe you can withstand me indefinitely, Ronan?" Her voice was rough and cold as she murmured to herself. "You'll see... Nobody opposes me. I remained motionless and held my breath in the hopes that she wouldn't see me. I could feel my heart pounding in my chest, and my palms were sweating. I had no idea what she would do if she discovered me. Lyra stopped abruptly, her eyes narrowing as though she had a feeling. She pivoted, surveying the room. I lowered myself even further in the hopes that she wouldn't notice. She looked at me for a long time, her eyes piercing and keen. I bit my lip, forcing myself to remain composed and unnoticed. Finally, she muttered something under her breath and turned away. "I'll force him to see... Her footsteps faded into the darkness as she walked out of the room, hissing, "He'll have no choice but to obey." With trembling hands, I cautiously emerged from my hiding place after waiting until I was certain she was gone. It was too near. With my heart still racing, I snatched Ronan's necklace from the altar and sneaked out of the room. I had to return to the pack to alert someone to what I had discovered. Ronan was right in the thick of everything, and whatever was going on here was dangerous. My friend Elara was in the kitchen when I returned to the pack house. She was shocked to see how shaken I appeared when she looked up. Melissa? What took place? With a worried expression on her face, she asked. "Elara, this is Ronan. I murmured, without raising my voice above a whisper, "He's in trouble." "His jewellery was in a secret room that was full of sinister symbols. Lyra is employing black magic of some sort on him. Elara's gaze expanded. "Dark magic? That's serious, Melissa. You must avoid her company. She poses a threat. "But Ronan needs assistance!" I gripped his necklace tightly while I fought. "I can't just let him deal with this on his own." With a stern gaze, Elara shook her head. "Listen to me, Melissa. This kind of sorcery is unbeatable. It's too risky if Lyra is as strong as you claim. You ought to consider leaving to protect yourself. I felt a wave of resolve and shook my head. "Elara, I can't do it. I'm needed by Ronan. I can't leave him right now. Elara sighed her expression a mix of resignation and worry. Melissa, you're putting your life in danger. However, I can see why you would want to assist him. With a wave of thankfulness, I replied gently, "Thank you, Elara." "Even though I am aware of the risks, I cannot do anything." Elara squeezed my hand. "Just swear to me that you will exercise caution." I said, "I will," but I wasn't sure how I would follow through on that. I was willing to do whatever it needed to help Ronan, even if I had no idea what Lyra was capable of. I sat by myself later that evening, reflecting on what I had discovered. As I stroked my fingertips across the shiny metal of Ronan's necklace, I noticed an odd warmth. In the back of my mind, like a whisper, I could sense our connection, weak but present. Perhaps if I broke the tie, I wouldn't have to endure his misery and suffering. I knew I couldn't do it, though, even as I considered it. I had to be with him no matter how much it hurt. Whether he liked it or not, he was now a part of me. I was just considering this when I suddenly felt a desperate tug in my chest as if my heart were being pulled by a thread. Through our connection, I sensed Ronan calling to me, his anguish and terror weighing heavily on my thoughts. "Ronan?" I gripped his necklace hard and murmured. Even though our connection was weak, I could sense his anxiety and despair. I tried to contact him by closing my eyes and concentrating on our relationship. "I'm here, Ronan. What is going on? I gasped as his anguish struck me like a wave. As though I were in his shoes, I could sense his fear and fatigue. I found it difficult to maintain my composure and maintain the connection since it was so overpowering. "Elissa..." In my imagination, I could hear his voice, feeble and hurt. "I need you," I said. With a sudden sense of resolve, I muttered, "I'm coming." I was going to locate him and assist him, even though I had no idea how. I felt desperate and hollow as the connection waned. However, I was aware that I couldn't abandon him. No matter the risk, I had to return to locate him. I was about to get up and go when Elara showed up in the doorway, her face white with anxiety. "Are you certain about this, Melissa?" Her voice was shaking as she asked. "You could get wounded by Lyra. If she discovers you're assisting Ronan, she might do him much more harm. I inhaled deeply, experiencing a mixture of terror and resolve. "Elara, I understand. But I must try. I can't just sit here and do nothing because Ronan is in trouble. With a groan, Elara nodded. "Just... exercise caution. And return here if you need assistance. Don't confront her by yourself. I said, "I promise," but I wasn't sure if I could follow through on it. I could feel our connection drawing me in and pointing me in Ronan's direction. Following the slight tug in my chest, I crept out of the pack house and made my way silently across the pitch-black forest. I didn't let fear stop me, even though the night was quiet and every shadow seemed to be hiding something dangerous. No matter what, I was going to find Ronan. I followed the pull back to the secret room, and as I got closer, I could sense Ronan's suffering intensifying. I tightened my hands and pushed through my trepidation to enter. There was an uncanny quiet in the room, and it was even darker than before. I sensed Lyra's presence like a shadow watching me from the corners. "Ronan?" I searched the room in a whisper. He moaned softly in the darkness, and I caught a glimpse of him, leaning against the wall, appearing tired and pale. He gazed at me with a mix of pain and relief as his eyes opened slightly. His voice was faint as he whispered, "Melissa, you shouldn't be here." I knelt next to him and touched his arm, saying, "I couldn't leave you." Ronan, what's going on? Why are you being treated this way by Lyra? Wincing, he shook his head. She wants to oversee me and the pack. She will stop at nothing to obtain it. Anger shot through me. We'll stop her after that. Together. Ronan's eyes, which were a mixture of dread and gratitude, met mine. "It's too risky, Melissa. She will return, and if she spots you I firmly stated, "I don't care." "I won't abandon you." My heart was racing when I froze when a shadow moved at the chamber's entrance. With a glimmer of sadistic amusement, Lyra entered the room. She scoffed and said, "Well, well." "Looks like I have a guest." With my heart pounding but my determination unwavering, I stood facing her. "Lyra, leave him alone. He is not your property. Lyra grinned broadly and stepped forward, her eyes calculating and icy. "Oh, Melissa... You don't know what you're up against. Ronan's terror radiated through our relationship, and I could feel his fingers clinging feebly to my arm. However, I remained steadfast and refused to compromise. I wasn't going to let Lyra win, and this was far from over.
