Chapter 10: The Hidden Power

1009 Words
I could feel the energy building inside of me with each breath, like a wave about to burst. No matter how much Lyra tightened her hold on the pack or how much Ronan suffered, I couldn't remain hidden indefinitely. My head was full of questions as I got ready to go back. How would I respond? How could I make them see the truth? I wasn’t sure yet, but one thing was clear: I couldn’t let fear stop me. The pack had previously been my family, and now, with this new power emerging inside me, I had a responsibility to save them from Lyra’s falsehoods. As I prepared to leave my lonely life behind, the trees seemed to be whispering encouraging words to me as I packed my belongings. I was more determined than ever, even though I had no idea what was waiting for me when I got home. I woke up before the sun the following morning, guided through the woods by an unexplained energy. My mind was filled with memories of the pack as I walked, including training sessions, laughing, and even the difficult lessons that had strengthened us. My heart ached for the house I had lost because of those memories. However, I felt more confident when I noticed the slight glow surrounding my hands. I said, "I'm coming back," as though I were swearing to the wind. A few hours later, just as I was getting close to the forest's edge, I heard something rustling behind me. I whirled around in shock, feeling a rush of vitality in my veins, prepared to defend myself if necessary. However, it was just a pack elder, and he was staring at me with wide eyes. “Is that you, Melissa?” His voice was full of incredulity as he asked. "It's me," I said quietly. "I'm returning to keep everyone safe—to keep Ronan safe." He took a step forward and looked at me with intense interest. "Child, you have a strength about you. Something I haven't previously seen. What has changed, please? I told my tale for the first time, including the vision, the secret power, and how I related to Ronan's suffering. The elder paid close attention and nodded as though he knew more than he was admitting. Finally, he whispered, "You come from a rare line, one that is deeply rooted in the history of the pack." Melissa, this power is a gift that is intended to guard and heal. It has a weight that is difficult to bear, so use it carefully. I felt proud and purposeful after hearing his speech. "Yes, I will. I appreciate your belief in me. The elder put a hand on my shoulder and extended out. Then leave. Keep our pack safe. But keep in mind, Melissa, that genuine strength comes from the heart that wields it, not just from having power. I headed toward the pack's territory while the elder's comments continued to reverberate in my head. The noises of the gathering, the distant buzz of people, were already audible to me. As I got to the edge of the clearing, my heartbeat accelerated. The entire pack was present, with Lyra standing next to Ronan with a possessive hand on his shoulder. As I took in the scene, my jaw tensed. She appeared so confident, so convinced that she had prevailed. She hadn't, however, anticipated my return or my realization of my actual strength. The crowd turned as I moved ahead, and they fell silent upon seeing me. A glimmer of irritation appeared on Lyra's face as her eyes narrowed. She spoke smoothly, but with a hint of fear, "Melissa, you were exiled." Why are you here? I refused to be intimidated by her and held my head high. With a firm voice, I stated, "I returned to defend the pack." "To keep Ronan safe from you." As they looked at one other in disbelief, gasps echoed across the audience. Lyra's eyes gleamed with hate as her features darkened and she stepped closer. "You dare?" She spits out. "Now you claim to be our protector after betraying us?" I ignored her and turned to face Ronan, hoping he would see the truth. "Lyra is lying to you, Ronan, and I know you don't trust me at the moment. She has been manipulating you and lying to you. There was a moment of hesitation in Ronan's eyes, but Lyra swiftly tightened her hold on his arm and drew him in. With hatred in her voice, she shouted, "Don't listen to her." Melissa's sole purpose is to stir up trouble. She is a traitor! However, I could see the hesitancy and slight flicker of grief and bewilderment in Ronan's eyes. With my heart racing, I took a step closer. "Please, Ronan. You are familiar with me. I would never harm you, you know that. Before he could reply, Lyra's icy, piercing voice echoed. "Enough! Melissa, your return is a violation of the pack's rules. Get out now or face the repercussions. Uncertainty flickered in the faces of the crowd as they moved. But I refused to back down, saying, "I'm not going anywhere." I will not allow you or anybody else to stop me from returning to protect my family. Lyra turned to face the throng, her face contorted with anger. "Have you noticed this? She violates our laws and customs. We no longer have her. Melissa is the pack's antagonist. Confusion and panic rippled through the crowd as they whispered. I sensed their hesitancy and doubt, but I was not going to give up. With my voice echoing, I said, "Believe what you want." But know that until the truth is revealed, I won't stop. Until everyone realizes Lyra's true nature. I turned and left after that, sensing that they were watching me. My heart hurt as I walked out of the clearing, but I felt stronger than ever. I would be back, stronger than ever, and I would do whatever it needed to expose the truth.
