Chapter 4

1283 Words
Evana As Evana was walking home, she was excited her friends will go to the same school with her. However, that encounter with Danny was still appearing in her mind. She wished to see, him, even if he was passing by from afar. “Silly me, what am I thinking? As if Danny would waste his precious time to look at Me.? She thought. Nonetheless, they say don’t wish for something because it can came true. Evana……she heard someone call her from behind, “holly s**t, it can’t be him!” She turned and oh! boy it was him in fresh looking at her adorably, Evana wished time would froze so that she could capture that killer smile in a picture. “Hey Danny, you surprised me, I didn’t hear you coming” Evana broke the silence “Actually you can say I was kinda following you, I saw you parting with your friends” answered Danny Evana “Really I didn’t notice” The two of them went silent, both of them could not tell the other that their last encounter had great effect on them. Danny was happy that at least he will be able to walk home with her even if they will just be silent. Evana on the other hand was happy that she was walking home with him, but suddenly she remembered the beating her mom gave her that evening, she felt cold chills runs down her spine. Despite what she can’t allow anyone to see them together, that includes other unrelated villagers, if the mother get to know about it…... She fights her own feelings and without knowing bursts Danny’s bubbles, “Hey Danny you see it’s getting late and I have to rush home and prepare dinner am sorry we can’t walk home together.” That what she said, but in her mind she wanted to shout, “Danny I really like you.” Poor girl love is not for people like you, she consoled herself. Although she tried to make an excuse Danny was well aware of her situation just like any other villager, so he bided her good bye and lowered his pace. Danny kept a safe distance, and he admired her, “silly girl she doesn’t even know how pretty she is,” thought Danny. He watched as she descends down the shallow valley and disappear, he wished she was born from a different family, he felt sorry for her and all her siblings, as they all didn’t deserve their mothers’ cruelty. Evana, heart was beating she wanted to turn back, and wait for him, but again, she was sure that Danny could not have any feelings for her, according to her she was just plain, “beside, who in their right mind would want a girl who always gets a beating from her mom,” she thought to herself and smiled. When she arrived home the atmosphere was tensed, no one was talking to the other. Her mother was sited in her favorite wooden chair that had cushion, she didn’t look soo good, and that scared Evana. “Finally the chiefs wife has decided to return home at last,” those were her mother’s words. Evana was confused was she not supposed to come back home? She wondered. But that how African moms are, they say one thing when they mean another. For instance, when they are leaving the house they can say, “don’t give those cows water,” which means you should the cow water, “when I came back, I hope to find you have burned the child,” meaning you should take good care of the baby, African moms they are complicated. As much as Evana wanted to assume and make herself busy she felt something was not right, but anyway it was not her business no one has died because everyone in the homestead could be wailing. She made up her mind not to talk to her mother and go change to something comfortable, but was stopped by her mom “you mean you’re pretending you’re not the one am talking to.” Evana just stood there, as the way her mother was talking any word or answer will be wrong leading to a beating and she was not ready for one. “So Evana for how long did you and Sara plan all this?” Evana was confused she stood there, because she didn’t know what her mother was talking about. Her mother got more angrier, “Don’t play, dumb with me, Erica told me that lately Sara has been talking to you, which means she told you of her plan to run away from home!”  After some times she could only manage to say “whaaat……Sara run away?” she looked so scared and her mother realized she was also in the dark. Sara was the first born, unlike Evana who could sometimes try to reason with her mother, she was opposite, did her duties on time and took her beating without complain, her running away came as a surprise to all. Evana was the second born, Sara was the first born eighteen years old and she kept to herself, Lisa third born twelve years old, loves music and vibes with Evana. Joe is the forth born ten years old and he is cool and a good brother. Tessa and Erica are the first set of twins eight years old, they are identical but different in characters, Tessa is quite and caring while Erica is the household FBI, or DCI, and reports all to their mother. Petra and Vera are the second set of twins identical six years old, mischievous but caring and loving, they have to be dressed differently. Nina is the second last born four years old, last girl in the family loves attention and believes that everyone has to care for her. Lastly, there is Jose who is almost two years and they all wish he is the last born, in an African family you can never be sure until your mother becomes a grandma. Soo it was clear that Sara had run away and a neighbor reported she was seen in the shopping center boarding the bus, but why was their mother looking for someone to blame when she knew very well how she treated her children. Two days later after Sara disappearance Erica who should really be a detective, found a letter from Sara under the bed. In the letter she explains the reason she had left and that she was getting married and never coming back. Their mother was really angry, Sara KCSE (Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education) results were not even out, and they didn’t even know if she had passed to go to the university because she was an A student, but she chose to get married. She directed her anger to Evana, “what’s the need of you going to high school, who knows you might also run away to get married just like your sister,”   her mother shouted. Evana realized that her sister decision will mess their lives, but luckily her dad, just told her not to make the same mistake, and despite her mother insisting that she should not join high school the father enrolled her. What do you think should parents judge other siblings based on the mistakes of their elder brother or sister?
