Chapter 8

Danny

Life in Naishi during the start of the year is really hectic, as people have to prepare their lands for planting, the main cash crop in the region is maize, beans, and wheat, potatoes too do well, but they are always optional. So during the season people are always busy, students get home from school and either go to the farm or to the river to fetch water for house hood use. Danny saw how hectic Evana’s life was and vowed to protect her the best way he could without her knowing. As much as his sister advice was good, he was really sure that he was in love with her, but he didn’t want to cause trouble for her, so loving her from a distance was what he could do at that particular time. So his sister was the best person to use, he knew she could do anything for him.

“So Leah, I remember you did your KCSE in Lare Vision, so do you still have that uniform, if I recall well it was new,,” Danny asked his sister. Who despite being in boarding in high school, she refused to seat for her exams there and was transferred on her last year to the local government school where Evana studies now.

“Sure, the uniform is as good as new…what, you are planning to repeat and dress like a girl to be near Evana …hahaa bro she really got you! Leah teased.

“How I wish it’s possible.” Answered Danny. “Anyway, since I have decided to follow your advice can you give her the uniform, I see her washing daily meaning she only have one set.”

“Anything for you, if that what will make you happy,” Leah was more than willing to help. However, she didn’t know that was just the begging and her brother will use her as much as he could.

Danny was calculative and through his plan her sister befriended Evana, and there he got his channel of giving the girl he like a hand without her knowledge.

Evana

At first she was surprised when Leah started a conversation with her, everyone in the village knew that the girl like to keep to herself, but she loved her brother Danny a lot, and most of the time when she goes to the shopping center they tag along. Altogether, that did not make Evana not to engage, as she was mainly asking about school. As they arrived at Leah’s gate which is first after the shallow valley, Leah took that chance to ask Evana if she would mind having the school uniform she was using because they are still new and she don’t want to just keep them.  Evana was delighted and accepted and she waited at the gate, unknown to her Danny was watching from the tree and he was happy to see her smile.

“Thank you so much Leah this means a lot to me,” Evana showed her gratitude to Leah, she was glad that Leah talked to her and gave her the clothes they really looked new. She was amused to see it was a pair like now she has three uniforms.

Life at home was the same, but Evana tried her best to avoid trouble, school and home kept her busy and she pushed her feelings towards Danny at the back of her mind. However, things at school were a bit confusing, in three weeks so many things are not making sense, at times she could submit her assignment only for the teacher to come and scold her in front of all student and her book to appear in her locker unmarked. Another incident she did put her chemistry text book in her bag to do the homework but, she could not find it later at home, in the morning Jersey was busy like any other student completing their assignment. Chemistry was the first lesson, the teacher was angry because again the girl had not done class work. Evana was chased out of class to do her assignment, and the morning sun was hot because it was still summer. Later, her text book appeared in her locker, she just couldn’t understand the Mistry of her books disappearing whenever she really need them, and reappearing after she has gone through shame. Teachers had even calling her Evana the mischievous girl, her classmate were talking and waiting what will happen next. Unknown to her Jersey her best friend was the one playing the trick, because she believed that Evana was the reason Larry was not into her.

After the chemistry incident and getting to know what was happening to Evana through his deskie Kerry, Larry found those incidences being questionable, because for ones only the three friends shared keys, which means one of them is the culprit. Larry guessed easily who it was, but could not quite understand why she was doing that to her best friend, therefore he decided to help Evana in his own ways. To him Evana was just a sweet soul, she never looked for trouble with anyone, but Jersey was the true definition of a villain.

So this particular day they were finishing their assignment and putting the books on the teachers table for the monitor to take them to the staffroom. So Larry saw Evana took her book on the table and also noticed Jersey mean look which was like a Déjà vu, when Evana turned Jersey smiled and they exchanged words, its like she was not done with her work. When all the books were placed on the table Jersey took hers and asked the class monitor if she could help take the book because she needed to ask the teacher a question. The monitor said it was okay, so she picked all the books and left, after she walked out of the door Larry excused himself too. When he walked out he saw jersey hide a book in her pullover at the back, there he got all the answers.

He waited for her to take the books inside and come out, he pulled her by the hand, when she turned and saw it was Larry she was mesmerized, “at last her prince charming has noticed her.” she thought.

“I really can’t understand you, why do you harm your best friend?” he asked her

Jersey, came back to earth, “what are you talking about Larry, whom did I harm?” she looked at him innocently

“listen here I won’t fall for your puppy eyes, just remove that book from your back, and take it in the staff room, one more thing if any mysterious thing happen to Evana just know I will expose you,” Larry warned her, “and to think I had a crush on you,” he added and left.

“Whaat… Jersey was shocked, Larry had a crush on her...I lost him because of that stupid poor girl,” she stomped her feet on the ground, removed the book from her back, and took it to the staff room.

Since that day, Evanas life changed, but Jersey hatred for her could burn the whole village, and she was sure an opportunity will one day present itself and at that particular time she shall strike harder.
