16. Blood Runs Red

680 Words
Summer thought that the next day would be awkward. Aidan had left during the night, not wanting Cissy to wake up and finding him there before they got a chance to speak, either with themselves, either with her.     It nearly killed him to leave her warm body at disappear in the night, like a burglar. But it was too soon. With a final kiss and a caress, he left silently.     Summer had fallen asleep but now, while preparing Cissy’s breakfast, her head was filled with doubts. The problem with casual s*x for her was that she wasn’t used to it. And how casual had it been for him? They had cuddled afterwards. He had showered her with pecks, whispering sweet nothings until she had dozed off.     But they were going to see each other at school and later, when she was would drop Cissy at the dojo. Would anything change between them? Were they dating or…?     I really suck at this casual s*x thingy…     Still drowsy with sleep, Cissy was way less chatty than usual. She was staring at her cereal as if they had committed a serious offense against her.     “Come on, Cissy. We’re in a hurry.”     “I’m sleepy.”     “I know, but we need to go to school.”     “I hate school.”     “No, you don’t.”     “I do when I’m sleepy…”     No arguing with a grumpy Cissy. She managed to get everything in order and drag the child towards the car. She was still yawning when she dropped her off at school.     A cup of coffee later, she was more awake but at the same time she was feeling excited. Would Aidan kiss her in front of everyone? Would he…?     Real mature, motherlike, Summer Belmont, she chided. You look like one of the teenagers you teach.     She was almost chirping when she caught herself. Was she really in cloud nine because of a good night with Aidan? She would combust if it was a week, then.     Humming to herself, she couldn’t say what made her stop. She was still grabbing the cup of coffee when something caught her eye. Was that a strap from a bag pack blocking the door?     She looked at her watch. It was still early, so no student should be there.     “Hello?”     She opened the door but something was preventing it. She bumped it a bit more forcefully but the door didn’t bulge.     “Hello? Is anyone there?”     Odd. She could swear someone was there. And why was the door blocked?     “Is anyone here? Open the door.”     “Hey, Sunshine.”         Aidan cheerful voice came from behind her, scaring the crap out of her.     “I really need to put a bell on your neck.” She muttered more to herself than to him.     “Do you want me to purr as well?” he joked, lowering his voice into an intimate whisper, his eyes already upon her lips.     “Not now, Aidan. Help me open this door.”     Momentarily taken aback, he let his gaze slide from her to the offensive door.     “Well, when one has to go…”     With a strong push of the shoulders, the door gave in to the hinges. He moved aside and she entered, her eyes scanning anxiously around.     “Sunshine? I thought you had to go…?”     “I know that bag pack…”     “It’s a school, Sunshine. They are bound to appear scattered…”     She looked around, a frown on her face. Something was off. Approaching one of the stalls, she softly knocked but moved forward when the door was ajar.     “Is anybody here?”     The third stall was occupied. Summer knocked softly but didn’t get an answer.     “Whoever is in there, please leave.”     At that stage Aidan was really staring at her, dumbfounded.     “Sunshine, there are more stalls available…”     “Shut up, Aidan!” she snapped harshly, to both their astonishment.     If asked, Summer couldn’t really pinpoint what exactly was wrong, nor why was she acting like that. Something was off and she was too restless.     Knocking a bit more forcefully she thought she had heard something but it was so faded she started pounding at the door. Aidan was next to her in one second later, and now he too was frowning. With the help of his shoulder, the stall door opened violently, showing a collapsed Cassie on the floor, blood pulling from her wrists.     “Oh my God! Call 911!”
