Chapter 6:Control Slips Away

1659 Words
The sound of footsteps echoed down the corridor as Alex entered the hospital wing. His gaze was sharp, calculating, but it softened when he saw Melissa, standing near the nurse’s station. She was laughing, laughing at something Sebastian had said. The sight stopped him in his tracks. His jaw clenched involuntarily, and for the first time, a wave of unease swept through him. What is she doing with him? He couldn’t pinpoint the feeling. Was it anger? Hurt? The thought of her so comfortable with his rival, so effortlessly engaged in their conversation, gnawed at him in a way he hadn’t anticipated. It didn’t matter that Sebastian was charming, that his smile could disarm anyone. Alex knew what he was, manipulative, dangerous. As he approached, their laughter stopped. Sebastian caught sight of Alex and flashed him a grin, but Alex wasn’t looking at him. His eyes were on Melissa, narrowed and dark. “What was that, Melissa?” Alex’s voice cut through the air like a blade, his tone low and dangerous. “Did you really think I wouldn’t notice?” Melissa’s stomach twisted at the edge in his voice. She turned to face him, her heart thumping in her chest. “Alex, it’s nothing,” she said, trying to keep her voice steady, but the look in his eyes made her question everything. “It’s nothing?” His eyes darkened further, his gaze intense, locking onto hers. “I see everything, Melissa. Don’t think you can hide anything from me.” Sebastian stood by, his amusement fading, but he didn’t intervene. It was a game to him, and Alex was the prey. Melissa’s breath quickened, but she forced herself to stay calm, to play her part in this tense interaction. “Nothing to hide,” she muttered, unsure whether she believed it herself. But before Alex could respond, he turned sharply and walked away, his presence still suffocating her from behind. Alex’s footsteps echoed in her mind long after he left. She hadn’t expected him to react so intensely. The conversation with Sebastian had been innocent, nothing more than polite banter, but it had triggered something deep within Alex. What was this feeling she had stirred in him? And why did she feel a twinge of guilt, even though she had done nothing wrong? That night, she sat in the hospital lounge, staring at the file in front of her but not truly seeing it. She couldn’t shake the feeling that Alex’s coldness had crossed a line today. It wasn’t just his usual domineering attitude. There was something personal in his anger, something that made her question his control over her life. From across the room, she saw him. He was standing by the window, his back to her, looking out at the city below. The stoic figure of the man who controlled every facet of her existence. But tonight, there was a tension in the way he held himself, a slight rigidity that suggested he was battling something far deeper than his usual pride. She couldn’t help it, she watched him. The way he held his hands in his pockets, the way his shoulders were tense, like he was holding back an ocean of emotion he refused to let show. “I won’t let this happen,” he muttered under his breath, but his words were more to himself than anyone else. He didn’t even turn to look at her, and yet, she felt the weight of his warning. She knew that what had just passed between them wasn’t over. It had only just begun. The following days were filled with an electric tension. Every time Melissa and Alex crossed paths, the air seemed charged with something unspoken. The subtle looks, the barely-there glances, and the silence between them, she could feel the pressure building, and it was suffocating. At work, things had changed. The simple acts of passing him in the hallway, exchanging brief pleasantries, had turned into moments of excruciating discomfort. His eyes were always on her, watching, calculating. She knew he was trying to assert control, to remind her of her place in his world, but there was more beneath the surface now. She couldn’t ignore the intensity in his gaze, the way he seemed to be challenging her with each silent interaction. Today, she entered the break room, expecting a moment of respite, only to find Alex standing by the coffee machine. The tension in the room immediately spiked. She hesitated, unsure of how to approach him, but he spoke before she could find her voice. “Stay away from him,” Alex’s voice was low, dangerous. He didn’t look at her, but she could hear the venom in his words. His jaw was clenched, his fists subtly tightening by his sides. “I don’t want to see you near him again.” Melissa’s pulse raced, and for a moment, the room felt smaller. She knew he was talking about Sebastian, she had seen the jealousy in Alex’s eyes before. But this was different. His voice, the edge in it, told her that his control was slipping. He was unraveling. “You don’t get to control me, Alex,” she bit out, her voice shaking, but she didn’t back down. He turned to face her, and for the first time, there was a flicker of something raw in his eyes, something vulnerable, something she hadn’t seen before. He took a step forward, closing the distance between them, his presence overwhelming. “I already do, Melissa,” he whispered, the words a cold promise that sent a chill down her spine. Melissa’s breath caught in her throat as she stepped into the quiet hospital corridor, hoping for a moment of peace. But the sound of footsteps behind her made her pause. She knew who it was before she turned around. Alex. His presence was unmistakable, like a storm cloud on the horizon, heavy and filled with a threat she couldn’t escape. She barely had time to react before he was right in front of her, blocking her path. His usual cold demeanor was gone, replaced by something far darker. “You think I don’t notice, Melissa?” His voice was a low growl, each word laced with barely contained fury. His eyes bore into hers, intense and unforgiving. "What was that back there? With him." Melissa swallowed hard, trying to steady her pulse. The hallway felt suddenly too small, too suffocating. “It’s nothing, Alex,” she managed to say, her voice thin. "It was just a conversation." His lip curled, his hand snapping out to grab her wrist with a force that made her flinch. The grip was almost painful, but it was the fury in his eyes that scared her more. “Do you think I’m blind, Melissa?” His voice dropped to a deadly whisper. “Stay away from him, or I’ll make you regret it.” Her heart raced. She didn’t know what to make of the words or the way he was looking at her. This wasn’t the man she’d seen at work, this was something else entirely. Something darker. “Alex, you’re hurting me,” she whispered, though she didn’t pull away. Instead, she looked up at him, the defiance in her gaze faltering slightly under the weight of his fury. He let her go abruptly, the space between them now charged with an unspoken tension. Without a word, he turned and stormed off, leaving Melissa standing in the quiet corridor, shaken and confused. Melissa stood still, the echo of Alex’s footsteps fading away, but the tension in the air clung to her. Her wrist throbbed from where he had held it, but it was the feeling of his anger that lingered. She had never seen him so undone, so... human. And for a moment, she had been frightened. She couldn’t process what had just happened. He had always been cold, distant, an enigma. But now, something had cracked, and she wasn’t sure what to make of it. Did he care for her? Or was it simply his need for control, his obsession with owning everything in his life? Shaking her head, she made her way to the break room, needing a moment to breathe. But she couldn’t escape the image of Alex’s clenched fists, his dark expression, the fury in his eyes that made her feel both terrified and strangely... intrigued. She glanced down at her wrist, still warm from where he had held it, and a shiver ran through her. What is happening between us? Her phone buzzed in her pocket, snapping her out of her thoughts. She quickly pulled it out, hoping for some distraction, but instead, it was a message from her friend, Victoria. “Are you okay? You looked uncomfortable earlier. I’m worried about you.” Melissa stared at the screen, her fingers hovering over the keyboard. She could feel the weight of her decisions pressing down on her, but what could she tell Victoria? That she was caught between a man who wanted to control her and another who seemed to want something far more dangerous, her freedom? She typed out a quick reply. I’m fine. Just trying to figure things out. But deep down, she wasn’t fine. Not at all. The silence in the break room felt oppressive, like the walls were closing in around her. The control she thought she had over her own life was slipping away, and she wasn’t sure how much longer she could keep pretending everything was okay. As she looked at her phone again, she saw a new message, this one from Alex. “Don’t forget your place, Melissa. I’ll be watching.” Her breath caught, and she squeezed the phone tightly in her hand. The sense of unease settled deeper in her chest. She couldn’t deny the way his words affected her. The power he had over her wasn’t just professional, it was personal.
