Dumbfounded in his astonishment, for a long minute he stood staring at the match-box in his hand, and then his eyes wandered round the room, almost as if expecting to see the owner of it there, too. The long curtain before the french window stirred and, the draught fanning his face, with a sharp exclamation, he strode over and pulled the curtain aside. The window was open! For the moment not associating everything together, he put the match-box on the mantelshelf and, going to the cupboard, proceeded to mix himself a stiff brandy and soda. Then, remembering the tablets he was intending to take, he took the bunch of keys he had brought down with him in the pocket of his dressing-gown and opened the safe.
