Old Wounds, Older Secrets

Kael left immediately, and Lyra spent the rest of the night alone with her thoughts and the fading warmth of his hands on her skin, trying and failing to make sense of the message the guard had described. The Queen must not wake. She'd been called many things in her life. Orphan. Charity case. Unwanted. Nothing in those six years had prepared her to be called a Queen, and the word sat strangely in her chest, too large for the small, careful life she'd built around invisibility. By morning, Kael had returned, exhaustion carved into the lines of his face, and he found her already awake, sitting by the window watching the sun climb over the treeline. "You should be resting," he said. "I couldn't." She turned to face him. "Tell me what you found." He hesitated only a moment before answering. "The tracker was killed by someone stronger than any rogue I've encountered. Whoever did it wanted us to find the body and read the message. They're not hiding what they know. They're announcing it." "Announcing what exactly? That I might be some kind of Queen?" "That you're the Moonfire heir," Kael said. "And that whoever is hunting you believes your bloodline threatens whatever plans they've already set in motion." Lyra pressed her palms against her eyes, trying to steady the spinning in her head. "Yesterday I was nobody. Today half the supernatural world apparently wants me dead for a title I don't understand and never asked for." "I know this is a great deal to absorb." "Do you?" She dropped her hands, meeting his gaze directly. "Do you actually know what it's like to have every certainty about your life ripped away in the space of a single night?" Something flickered across Kael's face, old grief surfacing briefly before he mastered it. "Yes," he said. "I do, actually. I lost my mate the same way. One night everything was certain, and the next it wasn't, and I spent years afterward trying to build a life around the wreckage." Lyra hadn't meant to touch a wound that deep, and guilt flickered through her at the reminder that Kael, too, had lost someone. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to." "You didn't do anything wrong." He crossed the room and sat in the chair near her window, closer than strictly necessary, close enough that she could feel the warmth radiating off him. "I only mean that I understand better than most what it is to have the ground disappear beneath you without warning. You are not alone in this, Lyra. Whatever else is true, I intend to make certain of that." The sincerity in his voice settled something jagged inside her chest, and for a moment neither of them spoke, the silence comfortable rather than strained. Then a second knock came at the door, and this time it was Damian, standing stiffly in the doorway with an expression she couldn't read. "I need to speak with Lyra," he said. "Alone, if that's permitted." Kael's jaw tightened, but after a long moment he nodded and rose, pausing beside Lyra's chair long enough to murmur, "Call for me if you need anything," before leaving the two of them alone. Damian waited until the door clicked shut before speaking. "I owe you an apology," he said. "For last night. For all of it." "You do." He winced at her bluntness but didn't argue. "I was cruel, and I was a coward, and I let my own pride matter more than the person standing in front of me. I don't expect you to forgive that." "I don't." He nodded slowly, absorbing the rejection with more grace than she expected. "I still feel the bond," he admitted quietly. "Even after rejecting it. I thought severing it would make the pull disappear. It didn't. If anything it's gotten stronger since last night." Lyra's stomach dropped. "That's not possible. Rejections are permanent." "I know the law," Damian said. "I also know what I'm feeling, and it terrifies me, because it means either the law is wrong, or something about this bond was never what any of us assumed it to be."
