The Line Between Duty and Desire

558 Words
Working alongside Kael late into the night became a pattern over the following weeks, the two of them poring over ancient texts and territorial maps long after the rest of the estate had gone to sleep. What began as necessity slowly became something Lyra found herself looking forward to, the quiet hours in his study becoming the safest, warmest part of her day. She noticed things about him she hadn't expected. The dry humor he rarely showed anyone else. The way his stern composure softened whenever she laughed at something he said. The careful, deliberate way he always seemed to put distance between them the moment a conversation grew too intimate, as though he was fighting some internal battle she couldn't quite see the shape of. "You do that a lot," she said one evening, watching him rise abruptly from the desk to pour tea neither of them had asked for. "Do what?" "Retreat. Right when things start to feel real." Kael's back stiffened, and for a long moment he didn't answer, staring down at the teapot in his hands like it held answers he didn't want to find. "I am forty two years old," he finally said. "I buried a mate. I raised a son who barely speaks to me except out of obligation. And I am currently harboring feelings for a woman half my age who was rejected by that very son less than a month ago. Tell me, Lyra, which part of that situation strikes you as appropriate to lean into." "None of it," she admitted. "But I've stopped caring what's appropriate. I spent six years being invisible because it was safer than wanting anything. I'm done living safely." He turned to face her then, and the raw want in his expression stole the breath from her lungs. "If we do this," he said quietly, "there's no undoing it. Damian will never forgive either of us. The pack will call it a betrayal of the worst kind. And whatever enemies are already hunting you will have one more reason to see us both destroyed." "I know." "And still you're asking." "I'm not asking," Lyra said, rising from her chair and closing the distance between them until she stood close enough to feel the heat radiating from his body. "I'm telling you I want this. I want you. Whatever that costs." Kael's hand came up to cradle her jaw, gentle despite the barely contained tension in every line of his body, and when he finally spoke his voice had dropped to something low and rough. "Then Goddess help us both," he murmured, "because I have wanted you since the moment you woke in my bed and refused to run from me even when you had every reason to." He kissed her before either of them could think better of it, slow and searching, and Lyra felt something inside her that had been clenched tight for six long years finally begin to unwind. Neither of them heard the study door creak open behind them until it was too late. Damian stood frozen in the doorway, his expression a mixture of shock, hurt, and something far more dangerous simmering beneath it. "I came to tell you the scouts found the rogue king's camp," he said, his voice unnervingly flat. "But it seems I've interrupted something far more important."
