The Son Who Rejected Her

622 Words
Damian's shout echoed through the stone passage before he did, and when he finally rounded the bend, torch in hand, his eyes went first to Selene, then to his father, and then, last of all, to Lyra. Something crossed his face that she didn't expect. Not triumph. Not disgust. Something closer to confusion, like a man realizing halfway through a familiar song that he'd forgotten the words. "What is going on here," Damian said slowly, "and why is my father's tunnel full of rogue corpses." "Ask her." Kael nodded toward Selene without lowering his guard. "Your girlfriend just tried to have Lyra killed." Damian's head snapped toward Selene. "That's not possible." "Isn't it?" Kael's voice was ice. "Look at her clothes, Damian. She shifted mid fight not two minutes ago. Explain that." For a moment nobody moved. Selene's composure cracked, just slightly, a flicker of something calculating passing behind her eyes before she smoothed it back into wounded innocence. "I came to protect you," she told Damian, stepping closer to him, her voice soft and pleading in a way that made Lyra's skin crawl. "I heard rogues had broken into your father's estate. I panicked. I only meant to help." It was a good lie. Lyra could see, with rising dread, that Damian wanted to believe it. "She's lying," Lyra said before she could stop herself. "She called us outmatched. She said we were worth more dead than alive to whoever she answers to." Damian's gaze finally settled fully on her, and for the first time since the rejection ceremony, he looked at her the way one looks at a person instead of a mistake to be discarded. Something tightened in his jaw. "Why would rogues care about you at all," he said, though it didn't sound like a genuine question so much as a man thinking out loud, working through a puzzle he didn't yet have all the pieces to. "That's not your concern," Kael cut in sharply. "You're not in charge of this pack yet, Damian. Until you are, this remains my house, my territory, and my decision." The tension between father and son crackled through the tunnel like a live wire. Lyra had heard whispers about their relationship before, the cold formality between them, the sense that Damian had spent his whole life trying and failing to earn something his father never quite gave. She saw it now, plainly, in the way Damian's shoulders squared like he was bracing for a blow that never came. "She rejected the bond," Damian said, quieter now. "I rejected the bond. That should be the end of it." "It should be." Kael's eyes flicked toward Lyra, just for a second, something unreadable passing behind them. "But it isn't. Not anymore." Selene chose that moment to bolt. She moved fast, shifting mid stride and tearing off down a side passage before anyone could stop her, and Damian, torn between chasing his girlfriend and standing in the tunnel with his father and the girl he'd humiliated hours earlier, hesitated a beat too long. By the time he made his decision and gave chase, Selene was already gone. "She'll run to whoever sent her," Kael said grimly. "Which means we just lost our only lead." Damian turned back toward them, torchlight throwing sharp shadows across his face, and for the first time Lyra saw something that looked almost like regret. "I need answers," he said. "Now. What is she to you, Father, and why did rogues come here tonight specifically for an orphan nobody in this pack has ever cared about." Kael's silence stretched a beat too long. "Careful, Damian," he finally said. "You might not like what you find if you keep pulling that thread."
