An Uneasy Truce

They moved the conversation to Kael's study, a room lined floor to ceiling with old texts, most of them bound in leather so worn the titles had faded into illegible ghosts. Lyra sat stiffly in a chair near the fire, her shoulder throbbing, while Kael and Damian stood on opposite sides of the desk like two wolves circling the same kill. "Start talking," Damian said. Kael studied his son for a long moment before answering. "Six years ago, a fire took Lyra's mother. I responded to it. Beneath the smoke, I caught a scent that shouldn't have existed in this territory, a bloodline the old texts call Moonfire, said to belong to descendants of the first Luna the Goddess herself blessed." Damian's expression shifted from skepticism to something wearier. "You're talking about myths." "I'm talking about the reason rogues broke into a warded house tonight to kill an unclaimed omega with no pack standing and no family to avenge her." Kael's voice hardened. "Myths don't send trained wolves to murder orphans, Damian. Someone believes this is real, and they believe it enough to risk exposing themselves doing it." Lyra sat very still, absorbing all of it, the weight of six years of loneliness suddenly reframed into something far larger and far more dangerous than she'd ever imagined. "Why didn't you tell anyone," Damian asked, quieter now. "Because if I was right," Kael said, "the safest thing for her was to stay invisible. A friendless orphan draws no attention. A prophesied bloodline draws every enemy this world has." His eyes flicked briefly toward Lyra. "That plan worked for six years. Tonight it stopped working." Damian was quiet for a long moment, jaw working like he was chewing on something bitter. When he finally spoke, his voice had lost its earlier arrogance entirely. "I rejected my fated mate in front of the entire pack," he said slowly, "because I was embarrassed she was an orphan nobody respected. And now you're telling me she might be the single most important wolf alive." "Yes," Kael said simply. Damian's hands curled into fists on the desk. "I need to fix this." "You can't," Kael said. "A rejection cannot be undone, Damian. You know the law as well as I do." "Then what happens to her now?" Kael's gaze moved to Lyra again, and this time it lingered, something unspoken passing through the air between them that made her pulse quicken in a way she didn't fully understand and wasn't sure she wanted to. "She stays here," Kael said. "Under my protection, until we understand exactly what she is and who's hunting her." Damian's eyes narrowed, something flickering behind them that looked almost like jealousy, though Lyra told herself she was imagining it. "Under your protection." "Do you have a better plan?" The silence that followed answered for him.
