Veronica pov... This morning was filled with beauty. Throughout the night, I pondered what I should do. If I stay in the palace, I am destined for a life of servitude. However, if I choose to leave with my mate, I will find freedom, though I am unsure of what "mate" even means. I have yet to experience the scent of a mate, and moreover, my character has already been stained. If my friend discovers this, I will face punishment with no refuge. My father wanted to make me a leader; should I forget my father's wish and go to Haethon Kingdom? I pushed all my thoughts away and walked towards the gate. "Veronica." Upon hearing this weighty voice, my soul became overwhelmed. The smile vanished from my face, replaced by fear. I turned to my right and trembled in fear as Katrina approached. She was not alone; Lara was with her. With my head bowed, I stood there. Katrina halted in front of me. "Congratulations! Your fate has changed. The leader of Haethon Kingdom is to be your mate." Lara's words dripped with sarcasm and anger. I remained silent, offering no response. Approaching me, Lara taunted, "What's the matter? Has the cat gotten your tongue? Speak up; after all, you are going to be the Luna of Haethon Kingdom." I glanced at Lara, witnessing the redness in her eyes, causing me to retreat. She smirked at me. "How feeble you are. Do you truly believe you are capable of being the mate of this courageous werewolf? I mean, take a good look at yourself. You can't even meet my gaze and hold a conversation." "I shall endeavor to emulate the example set by my mom." Conversely, Lara burst into laughter upon hearing my words. "Mom, look at this. This feeble bird seems quite interested in becoming Alexander's mate. Mom, enlighten her regarding her standing." In an instant, her voice underwent a drastic change. "Inform her that her destination is not the Haethon Kingdom but rather permanent servitude under the Mariana pack." She forcibly turned my face toward her. "Tell her that Alexander belongs to me." Tears welled up in my eyes as I gazed at Katrina, who stared back at me with a venomous glare. "Lara, let it go, and you will witness how your path clears." I trembled, fearing the intentions of these people. My mind raced as I pondered this. "Look at me, Veronica." Katrina commanded with a resolute voice. "Now listen attentively. When you are summoned to the guest room, you must utter a single sentence, which is, 'I rejected my mate. Do you comprehend my instructions?" I shook my head vigorously in refusal, taking steps backward. How could I reject my mate? I had finally found my prince, a glimmer of hope amidst the darkness, and now these individuals sought to snatch away my light. "Alexander shall be my daughter Lara's mate. It is my cherished dream. This valiant wolf's mate must also possess courage and not be a weak, wicked Omega like yourself." "You have taken everything from me. Do not take my mate. Allow me to be with my mate. I pledge that I will never remain here. Please do not inflict this cruelty upon me." I sank to the floor, clutching their feet and begging. Perhaps today their hearts would melt upon witnessing my plight, but my hope was shattered when they yanked me up by my hair and issued their command. "You will reject him regardless. After all, you cannot even perceive the scent of a mate. How can you claim to be his mate if you cannot discern Alexander's scent? Tell me, do you recognize his scent?" Scent.... This question haunted me throughout the night. Sophia and many of my classmates had told me that a mate possesses a distinct fragrance that only a mate can perceive, yet I could smell Alexander's scent. If not, then I am not his mate. "I have my answer in your silence. Now I must carry out my orders. You reject him; otherwise, I ruin your life." With these words, they departed, leaving me stuck in the same contemplation. * Sitting outside, I burst into tears upon seeing Sophia approach me. I poured my heart out, telling her everything, and her anger sparked, or rather, she began attempting to reason with me. She advised me not to dwell upon these matters, to escape this wretched existence first, and then consider speaking with Alexander. After receiving some advice from her, she strongly emphasized that selecting Alexander would provide lifelong protection from harm. Following her explanation, I was instructed to enter the guest room. The closed door of the guest room caught my attention as I hesitated for a moment. Eventually, I took a deep breath and entered. I immediately locked eyes with Alexander, who was waiting for me with a smile on his face. His handsome appearance was enhanced by his white teeth, green eyes, tall stature, black coat, and hair flowing down his neck. The question that repeatedly circled my mind was, 'Is this my soulmate?' Suddenly, a wave of fear washed over me as I scanned the rest of the individuals present. Alpha Thomas Jefferson, Luna Katrina, and Lara and Sara were seated with them. Alexander's guard stood nearby with a smile on his face. Standing before Alpha Thomas, I addressed him, "You called me, Alpha." He cleared his throat and asked, "How are you feeling now?" This question took me by surprise. I examined the group of individuals, their gaze fixed on the wall. "I am fine, Alpha," I replied, redirecting my attention to the floor. "So Alpha Alexander says you are his fated mate. Now, a decision must be made. Everyone is eagerly awaiting your choice. Will you choose your mate or not?" For the first time, my uncle sought my opinion. I looked at him and posed a question. "May I ask you a question, Alpha?" Their eyes were likely avoiding mine, but he nodded in affirmation. "If you were in my position, would you choose your mate or endure slavery?" Katrina rose from her seat, following my question. "How dare an immoral omega speak to my alpha like that?" She raised her hand to strike me, but Alexander quickly interposed himself between us, releasing Katrina's hand. His eyes were red like blood. "You are fine, mate." I shook my head. He turned back to Katrina. "I warned you not to lay a finger on my mate, Beta Katrina. You truly comprehend nothing." For the first time, I witnessed Katrina tremble, and her behavior brought me a sense of inner contentment. Alexander continued to twist her wrist, inflicting pain on her. "Please, stop. I apologize," my uncle pleaded, but Alexander paid no heed. He continued to twist Katrina's wrist, causing her pain. Then I put my trembling hand on Alexander's shoulder and told him to stop, on which he stopped and looked at me. For the first time, I began to consider my existence safe. The way he was standing in front of me as a wall, I was proud of my fate. I put my hand on his face; he closed his eyes; maybe he felt what I hadn't felt till now; then he opened his eyes; his eyes were green again. At that time, I had no fear; I just had to listen to my heart, so I made my decision. "I accept you as my mate; I want to go with you to your pack; will you take me with you?" * * *
