An unwelcome Discovery

Chapter 12 An Unwelcome Discovery The university library was unusually quiet that afternoon. Only the soft tapping of keyboards and the occasional turning of pages broke the silence. Nadia sat alone at their usual table, surrounded by books and neatly organized notes. Since Ethan had left for his father's office, she decided to finish reviewing the project outline by herself. An hour later, she closed the last book and stretched. "Done." Just then, her phone buzzed. It was a message from Ethan. Ethan: Sorry I had to leave. Dad kept me in a meeting longer than I expected. Nadia smiled as she typed a reply. Nadia: Don't worry. I finished organizing the outline. I'll send it to you tonight. A few seconds later, another message appeared. Ethan: You're making this project too easy. She couldn't help but laugh. Nadia: That's because you're doing the difficult part. Ethan: Deal. See you tomorrow. She slipped her phone into her bag and stood up. As she walked toward the exit, she noticed Vanessa standing near the library entrance. "Nadia." Vanessa smiled warmly. "Do you have a minute?" Nadia stopped. "Sure." "I wanted to apologize." "For what?" "I haven't been very friendly lately." Nadia looked at her for a moment before smiling politely. "It's alright." "I guess I was being childish." "We all have our moments." Vanessa nodded. "I was wondering if we could start over." "Of course." She extended her hand. Nadia shook it without hesitation. Watching them from a nearby bookshelf, Clara frowned. She knew Vanessa too well. That smile wasn't genuine. Later that evening... Ethan sat in his bedroom, his laptop open on the desk. Instead of working on their project, he was trying to solve another mystery. The Silent Killer. News articles filled one side of his screen. Police reports, public records, archived interviews, and maps covered the other. He studied the locations of every attack. "There has to be a pattern." His fingers moved quickly across the keyboard as he wrote another program. Within seconds, a digital map appeared. Red markers identified every known crime scene. He zoomed in. Then out. He compared dates, locations, and timelines. Still... Nothing. "They're careful." He leaned back in his chair. "Too careful." His phone vibrated. It was Nadia. She had sent the completed project outline. Ethan opened the document and smiled. "She really finished everything." He quickly replied. You're amazing. Thank you. Almost immediately, Nadia answered. Don't get used to it. Ethan laughed softly. "I probably will." At the same time... On the other side of the city... A black SUV stopped outside an abandoned warehouse. Three men stepped out. One of them glanced around nervously. "Are you sure this is the place?" "The information came from a trusted source." "What exactly are we looking for?" The tallest man lowered his voice. "A person." "The one they call the Silent Killer." The other two exchanged uneasy glances. "You really think someone can find that person?" "We're about to try." Hidden on the rooftop of a nearby building... A shadow watched them in complete silence. The face remained hidden beneath a dark hood. The figure never moved. Never made a sound. Only watched. Far below, the three men walked into the warehouse, unaware that someone had already seen them. And somewhere in the darkness... The hunt had just begun.
