CHAPTER 13

1096 Words
Shadows at the Gate “Elara, over here!” Kieran’s voice carried over the chaos, the air thick with the smell of blood and smoke. Elara darted toward him, her shadows spinning protectively around her as she dodged the swipe of a Bloodfang’s claws. “We’re outnumbered!” she shouted, skidding to a stop beside him. “No kidding,” Kieran growled, his hands clenched. His wolf flickered just beneath the surface, eyes glowing gold. “We need to push them back before they reach the inner border.” Elara nodded, her shadows sparking with energy. What’s the plan? “You’re the wildcard,” Kieran said, his tone grim. “Use your powers. Hit them hard and fast. We’ll cover you.” Her heart raced, doubt clawing at her resolve. “What if I can’t control it?” Kieran grabbed her arm, his eyes fierce. “You can. You have to.” Before she could answer, a huge Bloodfang barreled toward them, teeth bared and eyes wild. Kieran launched himself forward, shifting mid-air, his wolf crashing into the attacker with bone-crunching force. “Elara, now!” he barked, his voice gruff through his change. Elara took a deep breath, her fingers twisting as she called her shadows. They rushed forward like live tentacles, wrapping around a group of Bloodfangs. The enemy dogs snarled and thrashed, but the shadows tightened, immobilizing them. Get back! Elara shouted, throwing her arms wide. The shadows obeyed, smashing the trapped wolves into the ground with a terrible thud. Around her, the pack gathered, encouraged by her show of power. “Hold the line!” someone yelled, and the tide of the fight began to shift. “Elara, behind you!” Aeron’s voice rang out. She spun just in time to see a Bloodfang lunging for her. Her shadows responded automatically, making a protection shield that sent the wolf flying backwards. She met Aeron’s eyes across the battlefield, nodding in quiet thanks. The fight raged on, but with Elara’s quick thinking and the pack’s increased drive, the Bloodfangs began to flee. The surviving attackers fled into the dark of the forest, their howls fading into the night. Kieran, still in his wolf form, let out a victorious roar that echoed across the area. The pack cheered their sounds a mix of relief and success. Elara, step forward, Kieran ordered, his words carrying over the gathered pack members. She paused, her heart pounding as all eyes turned to her. Slowly, she walked to where Kieran stood at the ccentreof the area. Kieran put a hand on her shoulder, his grip strong. Tonight, we owe our win to Elara. Her quick thinking and daring saved us all. A wave of murmurs spread through the crowd, some nodding in agreement while others traded suspicious looks. “She’s dangerous,” Cassandra’s words cut through the crowd like a knife, dripping with fake worry. “Do we want to rely on someone with powers we barely understand?” Elara tensed, her shadows shifting around her feet as whispers spread like flames. Kieran’s jaw tightened. “Enough, You've done enough damage to the pack, if anything of such should repeat itself, you will be banished. Elara has proven herself time and time again.” “Has she?” Cassandra’s tone was sharp, her eyes locked on Elara. “Or is she simply biding her time, waiting to turn those shadows on us?” A low growl rumbled from Kieran’s chest, but before he could react, Elara stepped forward. “I don’t need your trust, Cassandra,” she said, her voice steady despite the knot in her stomach. “I’ll earn it by protecting this pack, whether you believe in me or not.” The crowd fell silent, the anxiety obvious. Kieran gave Elara a small nod of acceptance, but Cassandra’s grin hinted that she wasn’t done causing havoc. The moon hung high in the sky as Aeron slipped away from the camp, his footsteps quiet against the forest floor. He moved with purpose, his eyes searching the darkness until he reached a deserted area. “You’re late,” a voice said, smooth and low. Aeron’s eyes flicked to the person waiting for him, covered in darkness. “I had to make sure no one followed me.” The person stepped forward, the moonlight showing a familiar face—Lysandra. “Are you sure about this?” Aeron asked, his voice laced with doubt. Lysandra’s face was unclear. “The prophecy is in motion. Elara is the key, but she’s also a threat. If she falls into the wrong hands...” “She won’t,” Aeron interrupted. “Not while I’m here.” Lysandra raised an eyebrow. “You’re playing a dangerous game, Aeron. Your loyalty is stretched thin. Kieran doesn’t trust you, and Elara is beginning to ask questions.” Aeron’s jaw tightened. “I can handle Kieran. And Elara...” He paused, doubt flashing across his face. “She’s stronger than anyone realizes. If she learns the truth—” “She mustn’t,” Lysandra said strongly. “Not yet. The balance is fragile. One wrong move and everything falls apart.” Aeron looked back toward the camp, his mind running. “And if she chooses the wrong side?” Lysandra’s eyes darkened. “Then you know what must be done.” Aeron’s stomach churned, but he nodded. “I’ll do whatever it takes to protect the pack.” “You’d better,” Lysandra said, her voice a whisper that carried an unsettling weight. “Because the Bloodfangs aren’t the only danger. The real enemy is closer than you think.” Before Aeron could ask what she meant, Lysandra faded into the shadows, leaving him alone with his thoughts and the heavy load of what was to come. As Aeron made his way back to camp, the forest seemed strangely still. His feelings prickled, warning him of danger. A low growl rumbled from the shadows, and Aeron froze, his eyes searching the darkness. “Aeron,” a voice growled, filled with hate. He turned slowly, his heart rushing as Aldric stepped into the moonlight, his fangs bared in a hungry grin. “Did you think you could hide from me?” Aldric hissed, his tone dripping with hatred. Aeron’s muscles tensed, his mind racing. “What do you want, Aldric?” “To remind you,” Aldric said, taking a measured step closer, “that alliances have consequences. And yours just sealed your fate.” Before Aeron could respond, Aldric lunged, his claws glinting in the moonlight.
