CHAPTER 15

The Truth Within “Elara, you’ve been here all night,” Aeron’s words echoed softly in the dim storage room. Elara didn’t look up from the old book spread before her. The dancing candles cast shadows over the pages, the words almost shining in the dim light. “You should get some rest,” Aeron pushed, moving closer. “I can’t,” Elara answered, her voice strong. “There’s too much I don’t understand. Look at this.” She tapped a section in the old writing, frustration written on her face. “The Moonguard Prophecy talks about uniting the packs, but it doesn’t explain how. And these marks... they keep showing next to descriptions of the Shadowglade. What does it all mean?” Aeron leaned over her shoulder, studying the page. “You’re expecting the answers to leap off the parchment?” She shot him a look. “If you’re not here to help, leave.” “I am helping,” he said, grinning. “By reminding you that killing yourself over these texts won’t solve anything. What if this forecast isn’t even real? What if it’s just some old myth?” “It’s real,” Elara snapped. Her voice softened as she added, “It has to be. My parents... this pack... everything ties back to it. If I don’t figure it out, who will?” Aeron sighed and crouched beside her. “Fine. What have you learned so far?” She paused, her fingers trailing over the fine script. “It says the Moon’s Chosen will bridge the divide between the packs, but they’ll face betrayal and darkness. And here...” She flipped the page, pointing at a picture of a half moon circled by wolves. “This symbol keeps appearing, like a warning.” Aeron’s eyes darkened. “Betrayal and darkness. That’s dangerous.” Elara clenched her hands. “I need to know what this means. If there’s even a chance, I can stop what’s coming……” Kieran stood in the center of the pack hall, his presence ruling the room. Across from him, an older wolf, Elias, stared with barely controlled anger. “This pack is on the brink of collapse,” Elias growled. “And you’re doing nothing to stop it!” “I’m doing everything I can to protect Moonveil,” Kieran answered, his voice cool but strong. “You question my leadership, but you offer no solutions.” “The solution is clear,” Elias snapped. “Remove her from the pack.” Kieran’s eyes narrowed. “Elara has done nothing but fight for us. She’s risked her life—” “She’s a liability!” Elias interrupted, his voice booming through the hall. “The pack doesn’t trust her. They fear her skills, her link to the Shadowglade. She’s a danger to all of us.” “She’s the Moon’s Chosen,” Kieran said, his tone sharp. “You would have us cast out the one person who could save us?” Elias sneered. “Save us? Or kill us? You’re distracted by your feelings for her, Kieran. She’s not one of us. She never will be.” The room fell silent, anxiety crackling in the air. Kieran stepped closer to Elias, his voice low and dangerous. “You think I’m blinded? Then let me make this clear. Elara stays. Anyone who questions that is challenging me.” Elias’s eyes flashed with anger, but he didn’t reply. Instead, he turned and stormed out of the hall, his exit leaving an uncomfortable silence in his wake. Kieran breathed slowly, his hands unclenching. He turned to see Aeron leaning against the wall, watching him with an unreadable look. “That could have gone better,” Aeron observed dryly. Kieran shot him a look. “If you’re not here to help, Aeron, stay out of my way.” “Help?” Aeron smirked. “I think you’re doing just fine on your own.” Elara’s dreams were colorful and disconnected, a whirling mix of memories and images. She saw her parents, their faces hazy but familiar, standing beneath a silver moon. Her mother’s voice repeated in the dream, soft and relaxing. “You have the strength, Elara. You always have.” The scene changed. She was in the heart of the Shadowglade, encircled by tall trees that seemed alive with energy. A person came from the darkness, cloaked in moonlight. “Who are you?” Elara asked, her voice shaking. “I am Selene,” the figure answered, her voice airy. “The first of the Moon’s Chosen. And you, Elara, are my legacy.” Elara stepped back, her heart racing. “Legacy? What does that mean?” “You are destined to unite the packs,” Lysandra said. “But beware, child. Betrayal is closer than you think.” “Betrayal?” Elara’s voice trembled. “Who? What are you talking about?” Lysandra’s form began to fade, her voice getting faraway. “Trust your instincts, Elara. And trust the shadows. They will guide you.” Elara woke with a start, her chest heaving. The room was dark, save for the faint glow of moonlight streaming through the window. Her shadows moved restlessly around her, as if feeling her unease. She sat up, her mind racing. Selene’s words echoed in her ears. Betrayal is closer than you think. A knock at the door made her jump. She paused before calling out, “Who is it?” “It’s me,” Kieran’s voice came from the other side. She opened the door to find him standing there, his face tense. “We need to talk,” he said. Elara nodded, stepping aside to let him in. But as he entered, her shadows flared, feeling something wrong. “Kieran,” she said slowly, “what’s going on?” He paused, his gaze meeting hers. “There’s something I need to tell you,” he started. But before he could continue, the sound of an explosion rocked the packhouse, the walls shaking. Elara’s heart leapt into her throat. “What was that?” Kieran’s face darkened. “Trouble.” Elara’s shadows swelled around her, ready for a fight. “Then let’s deal with it.”
