Aegis

The flight over the Atlantic was a blur of exhaustion and adrenaline. Aria spent the entire journey locked against Leo’s chest in the darkened cabin of the Gulfstream. He hadn’t let her go once. Even as she drifted into a restless, fractured sleep, she could feel the steady, heavy beat of his heart and the possessive grip of his hand anchored firmly on her waist. When the jet finally began its descent, the first pale rays of dawn were just breaking over the endless expanse of the ocean. Aria sat up slowly, wincing as her stiff muscles protested. The emerald silk gown was torn at the hem, ruined by concrete dust and grease. She looked out the window. Below them, rising out of the deep, churning waters of the Atlantic, was a massive, heavily forested island. It looked like a tropical paradise, but as the jet banked lower, Aria’s trained eyes caught the lethal details: radar towers disguised as lighthouses, reinforced sea walls, and anti-aircraft batteries hidden perfectly within the cliffs. This wasn't a vacation home. It was a military-grade fortress. "Welcome to Aegis," Leo’s deep, gravelly voice broke the silence. He was sitting beside her, his tuxedo jacket discarded, his crisp white shirt unbuttoned at the collar and dusted with the same concrete ash that covered her. Despite the chaos of the night, his ice-blue eyes were terrifyingly sharp and alert. "Your parents' island," Aria whispered, remembering the scattered files she had seen on the Thorne network. "You really brought us completely off the grid." "Aegis operates on an entirely closed, analog system. There are no wireless signals, no external servers, and no satellite uplinks," Leo explained, his gaze sweeping over her pale, exhausted face. "Silas couldn't hack this island if he had a hundred years. The Vanguard can't track us. Out here, you are a ghost." The jet touched down smoothly on a runway carved directly into the heart of the jungle. Marcus was waiting by the cabin door as they taxied to a halt inside a massive, camouflaged hangar. "The perimeter is secured, sir. The localized staff has been dismissed to the outer barracks. The main estate is entirely yours." "Keep a double watch on the radar, Marcus. Shoot down anything that enters our airspace without my explicit clearance," Leo ordered. He didn't wait for the stairs to fully deploy. Leo grabbed Aria’s hand, lacing their fingers tightly together, and led her out of the jet. The tropical air was thick, warm, and smelled heavily of salt and rain, a shocking contrast to the freezing, mechanical chill of New York. A matte-black tactical Jeep was waiting for them. Leo took the wheel himself, driving them away from the airstrip and up a winding, steep cliffside road. The main estate of Aegis sat at the very apex of the island. It was a sprawling, breathtaking masterpiece of glass, dark wood, and stone, built directly into the cliff edge, overlooking the violent crash of the ocean below. It was beautiful, but as the heavy, reinforced steel gates locked shut behind them with a definitive clang, the reality of her situation finally crashed over Aria. She was completely alone on an inescapable island with the most dangerous man she had ever met. Leo parked the Jeep and cut the engine. The silence that followed was absolute, save for the distant roar of the waves. He turned to her, his large hands reaching out to gently cup her face. His thumbs brushed over her cheekbones, wiping away a smear of grey dust. "You're shaking," Leo murmured softly. "I'm not," Aria lied, though her teeth were practically chattering. The adrenaline was finally leaving her system, leaving behind a cold, hollow shock. "I'm just processing. The Vanguard... they actually tried to kill us in the middle of Manhattan." "They tried," Leo corrected, his voice dropping into a dark, feral growl. "And they failed. Because I will burn this entire planet down to the bedrock before I let them put a single scratch on you." He didn't give her time to dwell on the trauma. Leo stepped out of the vehicle, walked around to her side, and simply lifted her into his arms. Aria gasped, instinctively wrapping her arms around his thick neck as he carried her effortlessly up the stone steps and into the massive, echoing estate. He bypassed the sprawling living areas entirely, carrying her straight down a wide corridor and into the master suite. The room was massive, featuring a wall of glass that looked out over the ocean, but Leo walked straight into the en-suite bathroom. It was larger than her entire Tokyo apartment, centered around a massive, sunken rainfall shower carved from dark slate. Leo set her gently on her feet. He reached out and turned on the water, letting the steam instantly fill the cold room. "Take the dress off, Aria," Leo commanded gently. Aria froze, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Leo..." "You are covered in concrete dust and debris," Leo said, his tone leaving absolutely no room for negotiation, though his eyes burned with a fierce, protective heat. "You need to wash the blood off. I'm not leaving you alone. Take it off." Her hands trembled as she reached behind her neck. The heavy Thorne diamond collar was still there. She unclasped it, letting the priceless jewels clatter carelessly onto the marble counter. Then, she reached for the zipper of the ruined emerald silk. Leo didn't look away. He watched her with an intense, unwavering focus as the ruined silk pooled at her feet. She stood before him in nothing but a scrap of black lace underwear, entirely exposed, shivering in the steam-filled room. The Ice Prince let out a harsh, ragged breath. He stepped forward, completely ignoring his own ruined clothes, and walked directly into the hot spray of the massive shower, pulling her in with him. The warm water washed over them, soaking Leo’s white shirt and turning it instantly translucent against the hard, corded muscles of his chest. He didn't push her against the wall. He didn't try to kiss her. Instead, he reached for the soap, his large, calloused hands moving with excruciating, agonizing tenderness as he began to wash the dust and grime from her skin. He washed her shoulders. He traced the soft line of her collarbone, his thumb lingering over her old scar. He washed the dust from her back, his touch so infinitely gentle it made her chest physically ache. Aria looked up at him through the steam, the water plastering her dark hair to her face. "You left your company," she whispered, her voice breaking. "Silas is going to realize you're gone. He's going to use the board of directors to rip Thorne Tech right out of your hands while you hide here with me." Leo stopped. His hands rested heavily on her bare waist, pulling her flush against his soaked, hard body. He looked down at her, his ice-blue eyes stripping away every single one of his defenses. "Let him try," Leo murmured, his voice a vibrating, absolute vow. "The company means nothing. The grid means nothing. I don't care if the entire empire burns, Aria. You are the only thing I am keeping."
