The cabin of the seaplane was completely, suffocatingly silent.
The black screen of the avionics terminal stared back at them, an empty void where the most devastating threat of Leo’s life had just been broadcast.
Leo didn't scream. He didn't punch the console. He just stared at the blank monitor, his massive chest freezing in a state of complete respiratory arrest. His hands, still resting on the back of Aria’s chair, turned entirely white at the knuckles.
The Ice Prince had completely shattered.
"Leo," Aria whispered, her voice trembling as she unbuckled her harness and turned around in the co-pilot's seat.
He didn't blink. His ice-blue eyes were blown wide, completely consumed by a dark, bottomless terror. For twenty-five years, he had been trained to protect his empire, to calculate market variables, and to dismantle his enemies. But he had never been taught how to process the image of his mother—the only woman besides Aria who had ever held a piece of his frozen heart—tied to a chair in the hands of a psychopath.
"Leo, breathe," Aria commanded softly. She reached up, her small, grease-stained hands gripping his rigid jaw. She forced his gaze away from the monitor and directly into her vivid emerald eyes. "Look at me. Breathe."
Leo let out a ragged, agonizing gasp, the sound tearing violently out of his chest. He collapsed forward, dropping to his knees on the vibrating metal floorboards of the cabin, and buried his face into the crook of Aria’s neck. His massive arms wrapped around her waist, crushing her against him as his entire body shook with silent, feral rage.
Aria held him. She ran her fingers fiercely through his dark hair, completely anchoring him to reality. The man who had shielded her from bullets, who had built a bunker just to keep her safe, was falling apart in her arms. It was her turn to be the armor.
"How?" Leo rasped against her skin, his voice a broken, gravelly vibration. "My father... Julian wouldn't have let them within a hundred miles of her. He would have slaughtered them all. How did Silas get her?"
"Sir," Marcus’s tight voice broke through the hum of the propellers. He was flying with one hand, the other pressing a tourniquet into his bleeding thigh. "I'm picking up a localized, heavily encrypted analog transmission on the emergency frequency. It’s bouncing off a maritime buoy. The encryption signature... it's Alpha-One."
Leo’s head snapped up. Alpha-One. Julian Thorne’s personal callsign.
"Put it on the speakers," Leo ordered, rising to his feet, his jaw locking into a line of absolute, lethal stone.
Static hissed through the cabin, followed by a series of sharp digital clicks. And then, a voice filled the small space.
It was cold. Slower than Leo's, deeper, and completely devoid of human warmth. It was the voice of a man who had already started digging graves.
"Leo."
"Dad," Leo answered, gripping the edge of the comms panel. "Silas just broadcasted from my penthouse. He has Mom."
"I know," Julian Thorne’s voice crackled, chilling the air in the cabin. "They hit us in Geneva exactly four minutes before they breached Aegis. A perfectly synchronized, global blackout. They used a localized electromagnetic pulse to disable the convoy, followed immediately by a neuro-toxin gas deployment."
"How did they bypass your detail?" Leo demanded, his mind racing to analyze the tactical failure.
"They didn't bypass it. They annihilated it,"* Julian replied, the cold fury in his tone absolute. "The Vanguard sent forty men. I killed twelve of them before the neuro-toxin breached the armor of the transport vehicle. But this wasn't Silas's plan, Leo. Silas doesn't have the tactical brilliance for a synchronized global strike."
"It’s the Phantom," Aria spoke up, her voice steady despite the sheer terror radiating through her veins. "My father. Silas is just the bankroll. My father is running the board."
There was a brief pause on the radio. "Aria Vance. I warned Leo you would bring ghosts into my house. It seems I was right." Before Leo could snap back and defend her, Julian continued. "Listen to me carefully, both of you. Silas and the Phantom think they outsmarted us. They think they captured the Queen because I failed. But I didn't fail. Maya let them take her."
Aria’s eyes widened. "What?"
"When the gas began to leak into our transport, there was only one operational rebreather left," Julian explained, his voice thick with a dark, terrifying pride. "I told her to take it and run. Instead, your mother shoved the rebreather onto my face, triggered the secondary blast doors of the transport, and locked me safely inside the armored core."
Leo’s breath caught. Maya had intentionally trapped Julian inside the impenetrable safe room of the vehicle so the Vanguard couldn't kill him, deliberately leaving herself on the outside of the blast doors to be taken.
"She sacrificed her own escape to keep me on the board," Julian growled. "But Maya Thorne is not a victim. Before she was taken, she swallowed a microscopic, military-grade GPS isotope. It's completely undetectable by standard Vanguard scanners, and it runs on biometric kinetic energy. I am tracking her exact location right now."
Aria felt a rush of pure awe. Maya wasn't just a billionaire's wife; she was a tactical genius who had just turned herself into a human Trojan horse.
"Where is she, Dad?" Leo demanded, the absolute zero of the Ice Prince returning to his eyes. He wasn't broken anymore. He was ready for war.
"They aren't keeping her at the penthouse. Silas only used the tower for the broadcast to mock you,"* Julian stated. "The tracker shows they are moving her to a decommissioned Blacksite in the Catskill Mountains. An old syndicate stronghold."
"Marcus, adjust our heading," Leo ordered instantly. "Take us to upstate New York."
"Negative, Leo," Julian’s voice snapped with absolute authority. "The Blacksite is a fortress. If you fly that seaplane anywhere near their airspace, they will blow you out of the sky. You need ground support, and you need a localized network to fire your zero-day virus."
"So where do we meet?" Aria asked, leaning over the console.
"There is an abandoned airstrip thirty miles south of the Blacksite. I am currently inbound on a secondary tactical jet. We rendezvous there in exactly three hours," Julian commanded. "Bring the virus, Aria. We are going to dismantle Silas’s empire, and then I am going to show the Phantom exactly why they call me the Ice King."
The transmission clicked and went dead.
Leo stared at the comms panel for a long moment. He reached into his pocket, his long fingers wrapping around the heavy black drive containing the zero-day virus. He looked at Aria, his eyes completely dark, completely lethal.
"We have three hours," Leo murmured, his free hand reaching out to pull her flush against his chest. "Rest your eyes, ghost. Because when we land, we are going to burn the world to the ground."
