Chapter 7

1095 Words
Bruce As a royal, I am to help out the king in his duties and where he cannot be. I'm given some light royal duty once every few months as I’m not part of the top royal tree. I was just over at a baby’s shower, the birth of a mixed species, between a werewolf father and a witch mother. The newborn is sure to either have the power of a witch or be able to shift into a werewolf. Therefore, they have sent us an invitation for such a happy day to have a royal blessing. But secretly, I am to check if the baby was born to have both powers. The king didn’t want anyone to over power him. Most of the time mixed species newborn will have only one power, the dominant one. It was very unlikely for them to hold two powers together. I was assigned to visit this pack and grace the occasion. As we were driving on the way to another destination, we approached a diner. From a distance I could smell the freshly brewed coffee and black pepper roast beef. Amongst the smell, I do smell something pleasant, something that tells me it’s not food. It is very masked below all the food smell and I was intrigued by it. I asked my subordinate to stop the car at the diner for a break. We were going to be driving for another hour to reach our next stop. I ordered him to stay in the car while I thought I’ll just pop in for a short while for a takeaway. As I opened the door to the diner, a bell rang above me. My eyes scanned around the diner looking at everyone. There weren't many people around considering it’s in the middle of the day, lunch time was way over. I felt everyone’s eyes on me as I slowly made my way to a booth and sat down. I guess everyone can feel my aura that I’m emitting, that I’m a lycan. No, not just an ordinary lycan, but a royal. The whole diner suddenly got absolutely quiet and then a waitress quickly shuffled herself to where I was sitting and presented the menu to me. She bares her neck in submission, avoiding eye contact with me. She welcomed me to the diner and said to call her when I’m ready to order. Then she quickly went back to behind the counter and disappeared to the back. Ahem. I cleared my throat and pretended to take a look at the menu. At the sound I made, everyone went back to what they were doing before. I tried to think about what I saw when I stepped into here. I don’t seem to really recognize anyone or feel that anything would produce that smell. It however does seem a little stronger than I was outside but it was still very faint. I looked up from the menu and cleared my throat once again to gesture that I was ready to order. The waitress who was from before came out of the kitchen doors seconds later and walked towards me. As the door opened, I could smell it more strongly. That’s it ! That smell, that distinct smell of floral and cottage breeze is coming from the kitchen. The waitress came up to me ready to take my order while I’m still stupidly staring at the kitchen doors. She made a curtsy trying to get my attention for the order, that’s when my head snapped back at her. I proceeded to order a steak with sides, hoping she’ll have to go back to the kitchen for the order, hoping she’ll open those doors again. Nana’s POV: Jenny, my coworker, quietly opened the kitchen doors and slipped in. She hurries to my side, looking like she has a big secret to tell me. I asked her what’s up, why the sneaky movement. She whispered in my ear that a lycan royalty had entered the diner. I was like what?! with raised eyebrows. What would a royal be doing here in a normal pack’s diner? I couldn’t really feel his strong aura as my wolf wasn’t really with me anymore. Since the day she disappeared, I could hardly tell the difference between species. I just know whether you’re a human or not. Soon, I received the order from Jenny. She specifically tells me that this is the prince’s order. I chuckled. She doesn’t even know if he is a prince or a king or just some member of the royal family, she just decided to nickname him ‘prince’. I glanced through the ticket, it called for a ribeye with mashed potatoes and peas. I’m over here sweating already…Royalty.. What do royalties eat man? We don’t even serve fine dining food ! I took out a piece of steak from the fridge and started hammering it with a meat tenderizer mallet. I thought to myself, okay, gotta make this damn meat super tender and melt in your mouth. As I put down the meat to sizzle on the hot pan, I started to warm up the mashed potatoes. I put in extra butter and extra cream, gotta make it buttery and creamy for the prince. He wouldn’t care if he gets fat, he’s a prince, he’ll work out. At this point I notice that we are out of milk. The only milk thing we have is a creamer for the coffee and that would be weird. I guess I can substitute it with the next creamy thing that will give its texture. I added in some grated cheese. This wasn’t how we normally make our mashed potatoes. But I couldn’t freaking care, I just needed a buttery and creamy mash for the prince. I couldn’t say that we ran out of mashed potatoes or give him bland ones. To top off the mash, I added little droplets of truffle oil to try and increase the quality of the dish. Truffle oil was my new favourite thing. I have purchased a bottle and used it for my own food tasting time with my aunts. They all loved it so I’m thinking of maybe adding it to the menu while still keeping this place casual. I was done with cooking and plating food. I dinged the bell for Jenny to take it to the prince. About 10 minutes later, Jenny came back into the kitchen and asked me to go out. She informed me that the prince wanted to see me.
