Chapter Twenty I sit at my desk long after the sun has gone down, notebook closed, pencil tapping against the wood. The word I scribbled earlier—CONTROL—stares back at me through the page even though I crossed it out. Graves’s voice still echoes. The whispers from the archway echo louder. “The Master is watching tonight.” I can’t shake it. A knock breaks the silence. I don’t answer. Viktor doesn’t need an invitation anyway. The door creaks open and he leans against the frame. His shoulders take up more space than the doorway should allow. “You’re pale,” he says. His voice is even, but his eyes search me. “What happened?” “Nothing.” He frowns. “You’re lying.” I close the notebook with a snap. “And you’re annoying.” He steps inside, shutting the door behind him. “You heard something.”
