Chapter 12: Unmasking Secrets It looks like a peaceful neighborhood, with colorful houses lining the cobbled streets. The air was filled with the pleasant aroma of home-cooked meals and the distant sound of laughter from children playing in the nearby parcus. The sun cast a warm glow upon the surroundings, creating a sense of comfort and familiarity. Old Man Chi, expertly disguised by Maanakin, shuffled along the street with a slight hunch, projecting the appearance of an elderly man. His face was adorned with wrinkles that told tales of a life well-lived, and his eyes held a hint of mischief hidden behind a facade of wisdom. Dressed in simple, worn-out clothes, he blended seamlessly into the peaceful neighborhood. As Maanakin approached Presa, he maintained a cautious demeanor, making sure not to arouse any suspicion. Presa’s house exuded a homey charm, with potted plants adorning the windowsills and a welcoming aura that invited visitors inside. The scent of freshly cooked meals wafted from the open windows, hinting at Presa’s culinary skills. The neighbor, who had introduced Old Man Chi to Presa, stood nearby, exchanging friendly banter with a small group of villagers. The topic of food and duck meat had sparked the encounter, and the air was filled with laughter and joyous chatter. Maanakin remained astute and vigilant, keeping his true identity concealed while playing the role of the friendly old man. His sharp mind was focused on extracting information without raising any suspicion, weaving himself into the fabric of the neighborhood as though he had lived there for years. The sounds of the bustling village provided a harmonious symphony, accompanied by the chirping of birds and the gentle rustling of leaves. The warm sunlight painted the neighborhood with a golden hue, adding an extra layer of tranquility to the already idyllic setting. Old Man Chi maintained his act, wearing a friendly smile as he engaged Presa in conversation. "Good day, my dear. How fares the day for you?" he greeted her warmly. Presa returned the smile, though curiosity sparkled in her eyes. "Oh, hello, Old Man Chi. What brings you here?" With practiced ease, Maanakin continued his act. "I've heard of your culinary skills, my dear, and I couldn't resist the opportunity to sample your delectable dishes." Presa blushed at the compliment. "Why, thank you!" As they exchanged pleasantries, Maanakin subtly steered the conversation toward Reyna. "Speaking of wonderful women, I couldn't help but notice Reyna's grace and kindness. She seems like a remarkable soul." Presa's expression softened as she spoke of her friend. "Indeed, Reyna is a special person. She's been through so much, yet she remains strong and caring, especially for her children." Maanakin seized the opportunity to inquire further. "Has she ever mentioned her past or any significant events in her life?" Presa's eyes glinted with a hint of secrecy. "Well, she once confided in me about her dream of having a child. Sadly, she faced difficulties conceiving on her own. But I recall her telling me about seeking help from someone, who was known for assisting women with such matters." Curiosity surged within Old Man Chi, but he kept his act composed. "And what became of her visit to this someone?" Presa leaned closer, making sure no one overheard. "It was quite unfortunate. When she went back to check on the outcome, she learned that, that someone had passed away. She was deeply saddened by the news." Maanakin listened intently, taking mental notes of the significant details. "I see. Did she share anything else about that experience?" Presa shook her head. "No, she didn't speak much about it after that. It seemed to affect her deeply, and she chose not to discuss it further." “I’ve heard that Reyna has twins, Malcolm and Marga, isn’t that right?” Presa’s eyes sparkled with affection as she spoke about the twins. “Yes, that’s correct! Malcolm and Marga are her pride and joy. They are such delightful children, and Reyna is an incredible mother to them.” Old Man Chi leaned in slightly, as if sharing a secret, and asked in a hushed tone, "Presa, forgive me for prying, but I couldn't help but wonder about something. Who might be the father of the lovely twins, Malcolm and Marga?" Presa's expression shifted ever so slightly. She suddenly struck Old Man Chi's shoulder hard, causing the old man to almost fall off his chair. “You’re a gossip, Old Man Chi!” she giggled and covered her mouth. Only then did Maanakin notice that Presa had a large betel nut stain on her teeth. Maanakin adjusted his sitting position. He realized how strong Presa's strike was and massaged his arm. "Oh, not that much. Just asking, hehe,” he answered. Presa hesitated for a moment before answering, "Well, you see, Reyna has chosen not to reveal the identity of their father. It has been a personal matter for her, and she prefers to keep it private." Old Man Chi nodded understandingly, "I see, my dear. Some things are best kept close to one's heart, and it's important to respect her decision." Presa seemed relieved by Old Man Chi's understanding response. "Exactly, Old Man Chi. Reyna has been a wonderful mother to the twins, providing them with all the love and care they need. That's what truly matters." "Indeed," Old Man Chi replied, "a mother's love is immeasurable, and it is evident how much she cherishes them." Their conversation continued, but Old Man Chi refrained from pressing further on the topic. He had obtained enough information for now, and he knew that delving any deeper might cause Presa to feel uncomfortable. As he bid farewell to Presa, Old Man Chi couldn't help but ponder the significance of the twins' mysterious father. He realized that this piece of the puzzle was essential in uncovering the truth behind Reyna's past and, possibly, Stephen's secret as well. Old Man Chi returned to Presa's house the next day to gather more information, but he was confused to find her absence. The room seemed untouched, as if she had left in a hurry. However, something caught his eye – a mysterious picture of Dr. Quack-Quack lying on a table. Maanakin knew he had to report back to Stephen. The twins' father remained a hidden enigma, but with each revelation, they were drawing closer to unlocking the secrets that could change the fate of the kingdom and Stephen's life forever.
