“Hey man, don’t hate me because I’m beautiful,” Jax says, smiling and ruffling Kit’s hair.

Tina’s right. Kit has splinters under his fingernail now from gripping the table.
“Kit,” I say calmly, putting my hand on his shoulder. It’s tense and hard as a brick. “I never understood why Shauna cared so much about you. All she ever wanted from this whole thing was to keep you safe. And honestly, I didn’t think you were worth it. All I could see was a soulless bloodsucking monster. It’s only here that I can see—you’re more than that.”
