Chapter 5

698 Words
I didn't have to wait until the next weekend. The very next day, Harvey called me. His voice was hoarse and a little groggy. "Sari, I think I'm having a fever... I feel awful... Can you come over?" I wanted to ask his roommates to buy him some medicine, but Harvey replied pitifully, "I live alone." He sounded so pathetic, like he was on the verge of tears. I felt responsible for his illness. After getting his address, I bought some medicine and light, easy-to-digest food, then headed over to check on him. Harvey didn't live on campus. According to him, his place was close to the university, so he had lived off-campus since freshman year. Less than three seconds after I rang the doorbell, the door swung open. I was a bit surprised. As if guessing what I was about to say, Harvey quickly explained, "I was just getting a glass of water. The dispenser is right by the door." He did look like he had just rolled out of bed. His hair was messy, his steps were unsteady, and his face was flushed. I helped him over to the bed and made sure he lay down. After making sure he took his medicine, I was about to leave, but Harvey gently grabbed my hand. There was barely any strength behind his grip. I could have easily shaken him off with a gentle tug. Yet, for some reason, I didn't. Turning around, I saw Harvey's alluring eyes blinking up at me. They were shimmering with a faint, watery gleam. "I feel so bad, Sari. Can you stay with me a little longer?" Since I was the only one here to help him, and sick people would always be more vulnerable, Harvey clung to me with absolute dependence. It was July, the rainy season in our city. As he spoke, a gentle patter of rain began to fall outside the window. I let out a quiet sigh. Sitting down on the edge of the bed, I said softly, "Go to sleep. I'll stay right here with you." I was supposed to be watching over him, but somehow, I drifted off to sleep myself. Harvey seemed to possess some kind of magic. Whenever I was around him, I instantly felt relaxed. There was absolutely no pressure. Only later did I realize that I had already built a deep level of trust with him. Somehow, I just knew he would always have my back. When I woke up again, it was already the next morning. I had gone from leaning over the edge of the bed to lying curled up inside Harvey's arms. My right arm was draped over his waist, and I could feel the firm line of his abs. I was about to slide my hand away quietly, but a larger hand caught mine first, firmly pressing it back in place. Harvey didn't seem fully awake yet. He mumbled sleepily in my ear, "Sari, just a little longer..." Then, he drifted back off. I stayed completely still, staring at his sleeping face in a daze. His features were sharp and well-defined. Yet because of his personality, he always came across as completely harmless, making it easy to overlook his sharp features. I was staring so intently that I didn't notice when Harvey suddenly opened his eyes. My hand, which had been about to trace his jawline, froze mid-movement. He stared up at me blankly, his eyes half-confused and half-overjoyed. "Sari, am I dreaming?" After washing up, we both silently agreed not to mention what had happened. Today was Monday. Even though I didn't have any morning classes, I still needed to head back to campus. Harvey insisted on walking me back. Whenever I showed even a hint of refusal, he would look at me with those pleading eyes. In the end, I had no choice but to let him. Just as we were about to walk out the door, Harvey suddenly stopped me. "Sari...!" He hesitated, the words catching in his throat. I assumed he was feeling self-conscious about last night. But before I could ask, Harvey blurted out at lightning speed, "I want to be your puppy."
