CHAPTER TWO

Chapter 2 Maya spent two months in bed, Not by choice, her body just refused, every morning she told herself today was the day she would get up and eat something and sit at a table like a person who still belonged to the world, and every morning the light would come through the curtains and the weight would come back and she would stay exactly where she was, Grandfather did not push her, he came every evening and sat by the window and sometimes they talked and sometimes the silence was enough, Secretary Jin left food three times a day whether Maya asked for it or not, She did not cry much, the grief was not loud, it was the quiet kind, the kind that sits in the bones, On the fifty third day Secretary Jin opened the curtains all the way and the light came in hard and Maya had to shield her eyes, "Your grandfather is waiting," Secretary Jin said, Maya sat up, her back ached, her body felt assembled from the wrong pieces, she looked at the city below the window for a long moment, then she got up. Grandfather slid a folder across the desk without a word. Maya opened it, quarterly reports, shareholder records, financial statements, she read slowly and somewhere around the third page she sat up straighter without realising she had done it, Hartwell Industries was bleeding, three losing quarters, two major clients gone, Lucas holding everything together with borrowed money and a smile that was starting to show cracks, "The merger vote is in six weeks," Grandfather said, "Elena Silvercrest's family capital saves him, he gets the CEO title back in full, she gets the ring," "Chen International owns fifteen percent," Maya said, "Yes, the investment your father arranged before he passed, Lucas never knew the source," "Fifteen percent is a board seat," Grandfather said nothing, he just watched her. Maya closed the folder, she held it for a moment, feeling the weight of it, then she set it down and stood up, "I need three weeks," "For what," "To prepare," she picked up her bag, "and I need David Hartwell's number," Grandfather raised an eyebrow, "He is unpredictable," "So was I," Maya said, "not anymore," David was already at the coffee shop when she arrived, he looked at her across the table for a moment the way people do when they are matching the real person to the version in their head. "You look different," he said, "I'm done being quiet," Maya said simply, and sat down. She told him what she needed, board member profiles, voting loyalties, financial interests, the kind of inside information that takes years to collect, David listened without interrupting, when she finished he picked up his cup and said, "Lucas told my father I would never build anything that mattered," he set the cup down, "I have forty employees and I built every one of those jobs from nothing, I'm not doing this for you specifically, I'm doing this because my brother has been standing on our father's name for years and someone needs to show him what the ground feels like," "I understand perfectly," Maya said, "Good," he said, "then let's start," Three weeks later Maya stood outside Hartwell Industries, Black suit, red heels, hair pulled back clean, she had slept well the night before which surprised her, she expected nerves, instead she woke up calm the way you get calm when you have done everything possible to prepare and the rest is just walking through the door, David met her in the lobby, he looked at her and said nothing for a second, then, "Ready," "Yes," "He's going to lose his mind," "Good," she said, and she meant it all the way down, The boardroom had large windows and a long table and twelve chairs and the city spread wide behind the glass like it was watching. Seven board members were already seated when Maya walked in, they looked up and stared and she let them, she walked to her seat at the far end of the table at her own pace and sat down and opened her folder, Richard Hartwell sat at the head of the table, he caught her eye and nodded once, he looked older than she remembered, tired in the way of a man carrying something too heavy for too long. Lucas sat to his father's right with his eyes on his phone, then something made him look up, some instinct, and he saw her, His face went white, "What are you doing here," he said, very quiet, "I'm here for the board meeting," "You are not on the board," Maya slid the folder down the table, it stopped cleanly in front of his hands, "Chen International invested fifty million dollars in this company three years ago, the investment came with a board seat, I'm claiming it today," Lucas read the documents and the colour did not come back to his face, "You're connected to Chen International," "I'm the heiress," Maya said, "my grandfather built the company," "You're lying," "No," she said, "I'm not," Richard cleared his throat, "It's true, the board seat is legitimate and the documentation is in order," Lucas looked at his father and something cracked open in his expression, not anger exactly, something older and deeper than anger, "You knew, when we got married, you knew who she was," "Yes," "And you never told me," "I had my reasons," Lucas pressed both hands flat on the table and looked at Maya, "Three years, you sat at my table, you came to my events, you let me believe—" he stopped, jaw tight, "this whole time," "This whole time," she said, The door opened and Elena Silvercrest walked in wearing a cream dress and a diamond ring that caught the window light, she saw Maya and stopped, "Who is this," Elena said carefully, "Maya Chen," Maya said, "Lucas's ex-wife," Elena sat down next to Lucas and put her hand on his arm and he moved away from it without looking at her, "Why are you doing this," Lucas said, "I want you to understand what you threw away," "We had a contract," "You ended it early," Maya said, "you threw me out, you called our child a problem and told me to fix it," The room went still, Richard's face went grey, Elena's hand stopped moving on the table, "You were pregnant," Richard said, "Three months when Lucas kicked me out," Maya said, "I lost the baby two months later, the doctors said stress can cause these things," Elena stood slowly and looked at Lucas, "You didn't tell me," "It wasn't mine," Lucas said, and he said it to the table. Maya reached into the folder and slid the second document down, the DNA report, the one she asked for in the first numb days after the hospital because she had known even then that she would need it one day, Lucas grabbed it, his hands were shaking openly, he read it and his face moved through things that had no good name. "You kept this," he said, "I kept everything," "Why," "Because I knew I would come back," She looked around the table, "The merger vote, I'm voting no, Richard is voting no, that is forty five percent against, we need six more," She did not argue or beg, she just let the room sit with what it had heard, One hand went up, then another, then a third. The merger was dead, Elena stood, "Lucas, we need to talk, now," She walked out and after a moment Lucas followed and the door closed behind him with a sound that was very final, Richard sat down beside Maya, heavy, like a man whose legs had given up, "That was brutal," "He deserved it," "Yes," Richard said quietly, "he did," Maya did not feel it until the elevator doors closed and she was alone. Then she pressed her back against the wall and shut her eyes and the emptiness came in, wide and quiet, she had done exactly what she came to do and it sat inside her chest like a room with no furniture. The doors opened at the lobby, She put her face back on and walked out into the afternoon sun, One thing at a time, she told herself, one thing at a time. But somewhere above her in that building Lucas was following Elena into a room and Maya already knew that whatever came next was not going to be quiet, Elena Silvercrest did not lose gracefully, and a woman who did not lose gracefully was a woman who was already plannin g her next move, Maya had won today, She did not yet know what it was going to cost her.
