Turner looked at his watch, he had just ten minutes, he was going to be late for the first meeting of the year.
He had gotten a little bit too drunk, he normally woke up on time. Through the mouthwash smell, came an almost unnoticeable hint of cognac.
It was surprising that there was traffic at this part of the road. Adjusting his tie, he looked through the rolled down window.
Across the street was a boy, in front of a bright yellow flowery shop that had the inscription: Ready To Go Pastries, as it’s name. The boy was playing with bubbles. He made them, and then kicked them in the air. For a young lad, his kicks were solid.
The boy turned facing the road blowing bubbles into the air, Turner watched as his tiny legs jumped in excitement.
He stared at the little boy, the boy seemed familiar, his smiles, his laughing blue eyes, reminded him of someone he had lost.
It was ten years now and he still gets shocked at how much he missed her. Tessa. He wondered what would have become of them if they were still together and how many children they would have had in ten years. Bailey had come clean, telling him it was all a setup and how sorry she really was. Bailey sorry, she was definitely happy that neither of them got her. Turner kept staring at the young lad until he was just a spot in the distance.
…
“Aunt Lily,”
Kneeling, Lily took the two squealing siblings in her arms. She had not seen them since last year and she missed their cute chubby faces. She looked up at Jasy, wondering if he wanted to join them in a group hug, but the flashing red shadow eyes looking at them like peasants reuniting, said otherwise.
“My favorite munchkins! how you doing?”
“Fine Aunt Lily:” Stan replied grinning like one without a care in this world
“Aunt Lily”
“Yes darling”
“Look, look! At my new nails!”
“Oh sparkles!” Lily said stealing a glance at their mum. She had finally succumbed to the girl’s constant nagging.
Stan genuinely disgusted mimics his sister,
“Oh stop being an asshole”
“Oh no Stacy you didn’t!” Tessa gasped
“What did I tell you about curse words at your age?”
Stacy flings her hair, picking at her nails,
“Well, he started it first.”
“Young lady apologize now!”
“Am sorry”
Stacy said like it was normal to apologize
Tessa rolled her eyes, smiling at the guests that joined them.
“What’s happening this year?”
“How do you mean?”
“We are meant to come see you, that has been the agreement for years, unless you just feel like being stupid.”
Tessa glared at Jasy.
“You look good though, one would think ten years with those bubbly things would make you older, but damn you get even more gorgeous every year.”
“Thank you Jasy”
Tessa replied shaking her head while smiling at him.
“Where is Miss grey?”
“Oh she said she needed to get a few things.”
“Mum my stomach hurts.”
Stan hugs his stomach his mouth twisted
“Oh no, not again Stan, we really need to see Doctor Kane”
“You haven’t taken him to the hospital till now, this is a three month complaint Tessa.”
“I know, but it happens occasionally, I think his stomach hurts from all the sweet things he consumes.”
“Your husband keeps pestering me on your whereabouts, ten years and I thought he would relent.”
“Stop teasing Jay, we divorced a long time.”
“You know, for someone who divorced you early, he cares about you too much.”
“And why did you let Stan play outside, this is a small town, father and child could meet”
“Please, Jasy that would be my worst nightmare”
“The twins and I just needed somewhere interesting, we were kind of bored.”
“Ten years and now you are bored, pleasee.”
“Girl stop listening to adult conversation, play with your nails or something.”
Stacy rolled her eyes at Jasy
“I will smack you child I ain’t your mother”
“Jasy! “
“What, she disrespectful as hell.”
Stacy sticks out her tongue at Jasy
“Lovely eye shadow today Miss – Mister Jasy, I love the pop,” Stacy said, scurrying before Jasy could get hold of her.
The laughter that erupted from Tessa and Lily, was short-lived, as the small shout, froze everyone.
Stan who had been holding his stomach before he gave the shout was lying unconscious on the ground.
“Stan baby what is it, please talk to me baby.”
“Oh no, we can’t wait for no Doctor Kane, that boy needs to see a Doctor immediately. “
…
The nudge woke her up. Stacy’s eyes were red.
“Oh my poor baby,” Tessa says to her, holding her in her arms. Although they were always fighting, Stacy loved her brother and would do anything to protect him. She admired their love, which was nothing like that of their father and his sister. If there was one thing she was thankful for it was the fact that Stan had come out first.
“Miss Tessa”
“Yes please.”
Tessa forced herself to breathe thankful for Stacy’s warm hand that had slipped into hers.
“We would need to run some tests on you and your daughter, to ascertain who can be able to donate a kidney to your son, although I am very sure your daughter is the best match since they are identical.”
“Oh God, a kidney transplant, his kidney is that bad, but there were no signs Doctor no signs, Tessa cleaned are eyes in order to see the doctor clearly.”
“Can we run the tests now she says, already walking towards the theatre, ”Madam this way”
She was redirected by the doctor.
Tessa stared at the cute angel sleeping steadily on her laps. She had refused to go with Lily and Jasy, too shocked to even be her usual naughty self. She stroked her brown hair, praying that either of them was a good match for her son, more so her.
She wished she could take all the pain, her twins were feeling right now. It had been too peaceful over the years, she should have known.
She gently placed Stacy on the blankets she had arranged carefully on the chairs, and met up with the doctor. She didn’t like the sullen look on his face.
“I am so sorry Miss Tessa, your girl’s immune system is weaker than normal and having a surgery would be too risky.”
“You on the other hand are not a match.”
Tessa placed her two hands on her head, “There has to be a way out right?” “He will be put on transplant list, but the quickest way is testing the
father if he is a good donor, get the father of your children.”
