Everything shifted. Her back stiffened. Her skin prickled. “Something’s wrong.” All her senses sharpened. The wind changed. Her wolf, Tempest, let out a low growl inside her mind. “Someone’s here. We’re being watched.” The scent of damp moss and rotting blood hit her nostrils just as the carriage driver jerked violently and yelled out— “Rogues! Your Highness—GET DOWN!” The horses neighed and reared in panic. River barely had a second to react before the driver leapt off the seat with a snarl mid-air, shifting into his massive wolf form. A tangle of claws, fangs, and snarls exploded in the shadows as he crashed into an approaching rogue, trying to hold the assault back.
