Chapter 4:Banished

1071 Words
The ocean palace was filled with tension as my absence was discovered. On my way back, my father’s royal guards apprehended me. They escorted me to the king’s throne room, their grip firm yet respectful. “Please,” I pleaded with them, “listen to me!” But my words fell on deaf ears. The guards informed me that my father, the king, had personally ordered my arrest. The palace was packed by the time we arrived. My mother, grandfather, Polly, and countless merfolk had gathered to witness the judgment of Princess Arora. Whispers of disbelief filled the chamber. When I stepped in, my instinct was to rush to my father, to seek his comfort. But before I could reach him, he raised his hand, stopping me in my tracks. “As your king,” he declared solemnly, his voice resonating with authority, “I command you to halt.” Tears glistened in my mother’s eyes as my father prepared to pass judgment. His face was stern, but beneath it, I could sense his anguish. “The laws of the kingdom are clear,” he began. “Any merfolk who ventures into the human world defies the sacred order of our realm. Such an act warrants banishment. The punishment for this crime is three years on land, stripped of one’s powers. However, as Princess Arora, you will keep your powers. Still, as your king, I will not bid you farewell.” His words pierced my heart. Tears streamed down my face, but I knew there was no room for argument. The chamber fell silent as the verdict settled over the crowd. My grandfather, his steps unsteady with age, rushed to my side. “Arora, why did you do this?” he cried, his voice breaking. “I might not live to see you return. How will you survive without us?” He placed a necklace in my trembling hands. “This will help you control your healing power while you’re on land. You’ll need money to survive, but above all, Arora, you must never reveal your identity. Promise me!” I nodded, sobbing uncontrollably. My mother approached me next, her expression a mixture of heartbreak and love. She cradled my face in her hands, her tears mingling with mine. “Arora, my little princess,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “After today, my heart will be forever heavy. But remember, we love you deeply—your father loves you. He’s doing this to protect our people. When you feel alone, hold onto your crown and remember us. Goodbye, my precious girl.” Polly stepped forward, his usual cheer replaced with sorrow. “Arora,” he said softly, “I will miss you more than words can say. If you ever need me, send the shark messenger. I’ll come for you, no matter where you are.” A deep, somber melody filled the room as an announcement echoed through the palace. It was time for me to leave. The guards guided me to the shore, where a sacred ceremony would transform my tail into human legs. My mermaid necklace was exchanged for the ability to walk on land. The transformation was painful, a reminder of the weight of my actions. As the ocean waves crashed behind me, the sorrowful song of my people faded into the distance. I looked back one last time, my heart heavy with the love I was leaving behind and the uncertainty of the world ahead. The shore welcomed me with its cool sand and foreign air. I was banished, exiled from the only home I had ever known, but a spark of hope flickered within me. I vowed to endure these three years and return stronger, ready to reclaim my place among my people. And so, my journey into the unknown began. However, moments after stepping onto the shore, the weight of my banishment hit me like a crashing wave. I would not see my mother, father, grandpa, or Polly for the next three years. The realization was unbearable. My tears flowed freely, the sorrow in my heart too overwhelming to contain. As the tears touched the sand, something magical happened—they transformed into small, glistening white pearls. I was too lost in my grief to notice, my head buried in my hands, until an old woman’s voice startled me. “Young lady,” she said, her tone gentle but firm, “why are you sitting by the ocean with so many pearls around you? Do you not know it’s dangerous? Someone might rob you.” Startled, I looked around and saw the pearls scattered on the sand, shimmering like tiny moons in the pale light. “I don’t know where these came from,” I admitted, my voice trembling. The woman’s face softened as she studied me. “It seems they belong to you, child,” she said, her smile kind but knowing. “Such treasures are rare, and they could help you survive in this world. Come with me—I’ll assist you.” She reached out her hand, and though I hesitated at first, her warmth and kindness eased my fear. I stood and gathered the pearls, placing them in the folds of my makeshift dress. The old woman led me to her small, cozy home nestled by the edge of the village. The air smelled of herbs and wood smoke, a stark contrast to the salty ocean breeze. Inside, she prepared a warm meal and a place for me to rest. “You have a gift, my dear,” she said as she placed a bowl of soup in front of me. “These pearls may be more than just treasures—they may be a sign of something greater within you.” I nodded, though I wasn’t ready to share my story. The necklace my grandfather had given me pulsed faintly against my chest, a silent reminder of who I truly was and the secret I had to protect. For the first time since stepping onto the shore, I felt a sliver of hope. Though the world was unfamiliar and frightening, I was no longer alone. This kind stranger had extended her hand, and with her help, I would begin to navigate this new life on land. But deep inside, I knew my journey was only beginning, and the path ahead would be filled with challenges I couldn’t yet imagine.
