Chapter 3:A Heart’s Forbidden Desire

1012 Words
The days following my forbidden encounter with the mysterious man on the shore were a whirlwind of emotions. His face, his eyes, and the magnetic energy that seemed to tie us together haunted my every thought. The ocean’s depths felt colder, lonelier, as if the world I had once cherished could no longer satisfy the longing in my heart. I couldn’t ignore the pull—the undeniable force that seemed to bind me to him, though we had never spoken a word. It was as if the currents themselves conspired to remind me of him, whispering his presence with every gentle tide. "Arora," Polly's voice startled me from my reverie. We were in the coral gardens, a place that usually brought me peace. Yet now, its beauty felt muted. "You seem distant," he said softly, his kind eyes scanning my face. Polly had always been a dear friend, but now his concern felt like a chain pulling me back into a life I no longer wanted. "I'm fine," I lied, forcing a smile. But the ache in my chest was growing unbearable. That night, as I lay in my chambers, the ocean palace seemed to close in around me. My mother’s words about duty and tradition replayed endlessly in my mind, but they felt like the echoes of another life. The pull toward the surface was too strong to resist. I knew I couldn’t stay. With a determined breath, I slipped out of my bed and swam toward the palace’s edge. The great coral gates loomed ahead, their intricate designs a reminder of the boundaries I was about to cross. But I couldn’t let fear stop me. The ocean currents seemed to guide me as I swam toward the surface. The water grew lighter, warmer, as the moonlight filtered through the waves. My heart raced with anticipation and a tinge of fear. When I broke through the surface, the world above was just as breathtaking as I remembered. The stars stretched endlessly across the sky, and the shoreline shimmered in the moonlight. My gaze searched the beach, desperate to find him, though I had no reason to believe he would be there. And yet, there he was. He stood at the water’s edge, his figure silhouetted against the glowing horizon. My heart skipped a beat as I watched him, his presence as commanding as it had been that first night. His dark hair tousled in the breeze, and his eyes—oh, his eyes—held a depth that seemed to mirror my own. I swam closer, the sound of the waves masking my approach. But just as I reached the shallows, I stopped, hesitant. What was I doing? What could I possibly say to him? As if sensing my presence, he turned. His gaze locked onto mine, and once again, the world seemed to stand still. “You,” he whispered, his voice carrying across the water like a melody meant only for me. I froze, the weight of his stare rooting me in place. There was no fear in his expression, only curiosity and something else—something that made my heart race. “I...” I tried to speak, but the words caught in my throat. He took a step closer, the waves lapping at his feet. “Who are you?” he asked, his tone gentle yet filled with a quiet intensity. For a moment, I considered retreating. The rules of my world screamed at me to flee, to protect the secret of our kind. But the pull between us was stronger than any fear. “I’m Arora,” I said softly, my voice trembling. His lips curved into a faint smile, and the sight sent a warmth through me that I had never known. “Arora,” he repeated, as if savoring the sound of my name. “And you?” I asked, my voice barely audible over the crashing waves. “Lucas,” he replied. “My name is Lucas.” The air between us seemed to crackle with an energy I couldn’t explain. Though our worlds were oceans apart, it felt as if destiny had brought us together. “You’re not like anyone I’ve ever met,” Lucas said, his gaze never leaving mine. Neither are you, I wanted to say. But instead, I simply nodded, afraid that words would shatter the fragile connection between us. We stood there, two souls from different worlds drawn together by an unexplainable force. For the first time in my life, I felt seen, and understood, as if Lucas could peer into the depths of my soul and find something worth cherishing. But I knew this moment couldn’t last. “I shouldn’t be here,” I whispered, the weight of my people’s rules pressing down on me once more. “Then why are you?” he asked, his tone both curious and gentle. “I don’t know,” I admitted, the truth tumbling from my lips before I could stop it. “But I couldn’t stay away.” Neither could he, it seemed, for he took another step closer, his presence overwhelming yet comforting. “Stay,” he said, his voice a quiet plea. My heart ached at his words, but I knew I couldn’t. “I can’t,” I said, my voice breaking. Lucas nodded, as if he understood, though the sadness in his eyes mirrored my own. “Will I see you again?” “I don’t know,” I replied honestly. But as I looked into his eyes, I knew that I would do anything to find him again. With a heavy heart, I turned and swam back into the depths, his presence lingering like a whisper in the waves. As I descended into the ocean’s embrace, I realized that my world would never be the same. Lucas had awakened something in me—something powerful and undeniable. And though I didn’t know what the future held, one thing was certain: I couldn’t ignore the call of my heart, no matter how forbidden it might be.
