The knock on the balcony door at 2:17 a.m. nearly stopped my heart.
I had been lying awake for hours, staring at the ceiling while Victor slept soundly beside me. Every creak in the mansion made me tense. Dr. Harrison’s monitors hummed quietly on my wrist, tracking my elevated heart rate. When the soft tapping came again, I slipped out of bed without making a sound and moved to the balcony doors. Damien stood outside in the shadows, his face pale and marked with fresh cuts from the Zurich accident. He looked exhausted but alive. I unlocked the door quickly and pulled him inside, closing it behind us.
“Damien,” I whispered, throwing my arms around him before I could think. He held me tightly, his body tense and warm against mine. I could feel the bandages under his shirt. “You are really here. I thought I might never see you again after that call.”
He pulled back just enough to look at me, his eyes dark with exhaustion and something heavier. “I had to come back. What I found in Switzerland changes everything. I could not risk sending it through messages.”
We moved quietly to the small sitting area in the corner of the room, far from the bed where Victor slept. I kept my voice barely above a whisper. “Tell me. What happened after the crash? Did you find her?”
Damien ran a hand through his messy hair and pulled out a small USB drive from his pocket. He handed it to me, his fingers lingering on mine. “She is alive, Clara. My mother is alive. But it is not what I thought. She did not die in any accident. She left willingly. And she has been living with someone I never expected.”
I stared at the USB drive in my palm. My heart pounded so hard I worried the monitors would alert Dr. Harrison. “Who?”
“ Marcus Vance,” Damien said. His voice was low and bitter. “Victor’s former business partner. The one my father destroyed fifteen years ago. The underground kingpin who controls half the black market routes from Europe to Asia. She ran away with him. They faked her death together.”
The words hit me like a physical blow. I sat down slowly on the edge of the chair, trying to process what he was saying. “She chose to leave you? She let you believe she was dead all these years?”
Damien nodded. His eyes looked haunted. He pulled out his phone and showed me scanned documents and photos he had risked everything to get. There were pictures of a woman who looked like an older version of the photos I had seen of Damien’s mother. She was smiling in one of them, standing beside a powerful looking man with cold eyes. Marcus Vance. The dates on the documents went back years. Bank records. Travel logs. Even a private marriage certificate under different names.
“She planned it,” Damien continued. “Victor was becoming more violent. More controlling. She found out about some of his worst deals and wanted out. Vance offered her protection and a new life. They staged the car accident. Used a body from somewhere else. My father never suspected because it was convenient for him too. He got to play the grieving husband and tighten his control over me.”
I reached for his hand and held it tightly. “I am so sorry. All these years you carried that pain thinking she abandoned you. And now this.”
He squeezed my hand back, but his grip was almost too tight. “There is more. She has been sending money through those offshore accounts. Not for herself. Some of it was meant for me, but Victor blocked it. She has been watching from a distance. Vance has been using her knowledge of Victor’s operations to build his own empire. They have been undermining my father for years without him knowing.”
The implications settled over me like a heavy blanket. Victor’s perfect story about his wife’s tragic death was another lie. The entire foundation of this family was built on deception. And now Damien had the proof in his hands.
“What are you going to do?” I asked quietly.
Damien looked at me, his expression fierce. “I do not know yet. Part of me wants to confront her. Another part wants to use this against Victor immediately. But I had to tell you first. You are carrying our child. You deserve to know how deep this goes.”
I placed my other hand on my stomach. The baby moved gently, as if responding to the tension in the room. “Victor is getting more dangerous. He tried to poison me with the vitamins. Dr. Harrison is helping him. I have allied with Elena to fight back from inside. We signed a pact. We are going to use his greed to destroy his empire slowly.”
Damien’s eyes widened slightly. “Elena? You trust her?”
“I do not have a choice,” I admitted. “She can falsify the test results. She has power in the company. For now, she is useful. But I know she has her own plans.”
He pulled me closer and rested his forehead against mine. “We are in this together. No matter what. My mother’s betrayal hurts, but it also frees me. I do not owe loyalty to that ghost anymore. My loyalty is to you and our child.”
We stayed like that for a long time, holding each other in the dark while Victor slept only a few meters away. Damien told me more details about Zurich. The narrow escape. The contact who helped him get the documents. The fear he felt when the car flipped. I shared my terror about the poisoned vitamins and the psychological games with the forged will.
By the time the first light of dawn touched the sky, we both knew the stakes had grown even higher. Damien’s mother was alive and had chosen a life with Victor’s enemy. That connection could be the key to everything or the final trap that destroyed us.
“I have to go,” Damien whispered finally. “It is too risky to stay longer. But I will be close. I will not let them hurt you or our baby.”
I kissed him deeply, pouring all my fear and love into it. “Come back to me soon. We need you.”
He slipped out through the balcony the same way he came, disappearing into the early morning shadows. I returned to bed beside Victor, my mind spinning with everything I had learned. The return of the phantom, the ghost of Damien’s mother, had brought more questions than answers. She had willingly left her son and built a new life with a dangerous man. The betrayal ran deeper than any of us imagined.
As Victor began to stir beside me, I closed my eyes and pretended to sleep. Inside, my resolve hardened. With Elena as my secret ally and Damien fighting from the shadows, we had a chance. A small one, but a chance. Victor’s empire was built on lies, and those lies were starting to crack.
The phantom had returned. Not as a victim, but as a player in a game that had been going on for decades. And now, whether she knew it or not, she had given us another weapon to use against the man who had controlled all of us for far too long.
I rested my hand on my stomach and made another silent promise. We would survive this. We would break free. Even if it meant burning everything down in the process.
