Dangerous secret

The photo on my phone felt like a bomb waiting to explode. I could not stop staring at the image of Damien and me kissing at the gala. The anonymous message kept echoing in my head. “I know what you did. Choose wisely.” My hands shook as I waited for the right moment to confront Damien. Victor had left for a late night meeting, giving us a small window of safety. I found Damien in one of the quieter guest rooms on the far side of the penthouse. He closed the door behind me and pulled me close, but I stepped back. “We need to talk,” I said. My voice came out sharper than I intended. “Did you send someone to follow us at the gala? Or is someone else watching us?” Damien frowned. “What are you talking about?” I showed him the photo on my phone. His face hardened as he looked at the picture of us kissing in the hidden corridor. “I did not send this,” he said. “Someone is playing a dangerous game with us. But I am not surprised. My father has eyes everywhere.” I crossed my arms over my chest. “Then who is it? And why are they threatening me? I am terrified, Damien. If Victor sees this, everything is over.” Damien ran a hand through his dark hair and sat on the edge of the bed. He looked tired. “Come sit with me, Ava. There are things you need to know.” I sat down next to him but kept some distance. “Tell me the truth. No more secrets.” He took a deep breath. “I did not come back to New York just because of the marriage. I have been investigating my father for years. His empire is built on dirty money. Money laundering, bribes, and worse. I believe he had something to do with my mother’s disappearance years ago. She found out too much and then she was gone. The official story was an accident, but I know it was not.” I stared at him in shock. “You think Victor killed your mother?” “I am almost sure of it,” Damien said quietly. “That is why I hate him so much. That is why I cannot let him keep you. You are not safe here, Ava. None of us are.” Tears filled my eyes. “I feel so trapped. I married him to save my family and now I am drowning in all this darkness. But when I am with you, I feel something real. I am scared, Damien. Scared of what will happen if we get caught.” He pulled me into his arms. This time I did not resist. “I know, baby. I am scared too. But I need you. I have never needed anyone like this.” Our emotions broke wide open. We kissed slowly at first, then with growing hunger. His hands moved over my body with both tenderness and desperation. We undressed each other without rushing. For the first time, it was not just raw passion. It felt deeper. More dangerous. “I need you,” I whispered as he laid me down on the bed. “Even though it is wrong. Even though it could destroy us.” “You are the only good thing in my life right now,” Damien said against my skin. “I will burn everything down before I let him have you.” We made love that night with intense emotion. Every touch, every kiss carried the weight of our secrets. I gave myself to him completely in that safer part of the penthouse while Victor was away. When we finished, we lay tangled together, breathing hard. “I do not know how much longer I can do this,” I said softly. “The guilt is eating me alive.” Damien kissed my forehead. “Just hold on a little longer. I am close to getting the proof I need. Then we can end this.” We fell asleep for a few hours in each other’s arms. It was the most peaceful I had felt in days. The next morning, I woke up alone. Damien had slipped out before Victor returned. I tried to act normal during breakfast, but my mind was racing with everything he had told me about Victor. The elevator chimed around noon. A beautiful woman with sharp features and long dark hair walked into the penthouse like she owned it. She looked around thirty, elegant and confident. Victor stood up with a rare smile. “Elena. I did not know you were coming.” Elena Langford. Victor’s daughter and Damien’s half-sister. Her eyes landed on me immediately. “So this is the new wife. Ava, right? You are younger than I expected.” “Nice to meet you,” I said politely. Elena smiled, but it did not reach her eyes. She studied me like I was a problem to solve. Later that afternoon, she found me alone in the library. “Stay away from Damien,” she said bluntly. “He destroys everything he touches. He destroyed our family once before. He will do it again.” I felt my stomach drop. “I do not know what you are talking about.” Elena laughed softly. “Do not play innocent with me. I see the way he looks at you. And the way you look at him. Just know that getting involved with my brother is a mistake. He leaves nothing but pain behind.” I stayed quiet. My heart was pounding. Then her voice dropped lower. “But I can help you. Help me take control of the family empire. Give me information about Victor and Damien. In return, I will help you escape this marriage. You can be free again. Think about it, Ava. You do not belong in this world.” I stared at her in shock. Her offer sounded tempting. Freedom from Victor. A way out. But it would mean betraying Damien. The man I was falling for. The man who had shared his darkest secrets with me. “I need time to think,” I whispered. “This is all too much.” Elena smiled. “Do not take too long. Opportunities like this do not last.” She left the room, leaving me alone with my racing thoughts. I was torn between trusting her and staying loyal to Damien. Both choices felt dangerous. Later that evening, after everyone had gone to their rooms, I slipped into the bathroom. My period was late. I had bought a pregnancy test earlier and hidden it. With shaking hands, I took the test and waited. Two lines appeared. I was pregnant. I stared at the positive result in complete shock. My legs felt weak. I had no idea whether the baby belonged to Victor or Damien. The timing made it impossible to know for sure. “Oh God,” I whispered as panic flooded through me. “What am I going to do now?”
