With Friends Like These

The next day at school was torture; especially seeing Pricilla and her posse strutting about the halls. Any time I saw them even turn my way, I ducked around the nearest corner or door, not wanting to face their wrath. “Oh, my God! Did you see Felicity’s dress?” Debra, Pricilla’s bff snickered behind her hand, all of them giggling along with her. God, please don’t turn the corner; please. I had ducked to the left as I had seen them coming, hoping that none of them had Spanish class this period. “It was awful! I cannot believe her mother chose that color for her.” Pricilla scoffed as she and the posse walked on by, making me slowly exhale the breath I was holding. “Hey, best friend.” I nearly jumped out of my sox at that, slapping my own hand over my mouth to make sure the Prissy Posse didn’t hear me. “f**k; Drew, don’t do that!” I punched my best friend in the shoulder, making him grab it in mock pain. “Oh, you wound me so!” He threw his hand back onto his forehead, swooning and laughing while he did. “What had you all jumpy today, hmmm? Did your wolf have you distracted??” He wiggled his eyebrows at me and smiling widely; his smile turning into a frown the moment he saw my face. “Oh, baby cakes… don’t tell me…” I just shook my head at him and sighed, every tear I had already being spilled earlier this morning f with my mom. “My mom thinks I’m just a late bloomer.” “For sure, girl! I mean, it’s not just anyone who can outfight even beta’s during sparring class.” He put a hand against my head as he checked my temperature, frowning. “Hmmm… you don’t have the shifting fever, so mommy dearest must be right.” I shoved his hand away and shook my head, continuing on to my next class. “Yet another way the Prissy Posse and all the others will use to say I don’t really belong here.” I would probably get more nasty notes in my locker too, the more I thought about it. “Nah.. Remember Remi last year? Turns out he never shifted until three months after his birthday!” “Gee; it’s probably because he had a hormone imbalance.” I rolled my eyes, feeling slightly better that my friend was trying to cheer me up. “They only found out because he broke his femur and it wasn’t healing no matter what they tried.” “Yah… But still; maybe you have a hormone imbalance too!” He clapped his hands as he said it, making me scoff and laugh a little. “Have you seen my boobs lately? I wouldn’t call them hormonally imbalanced.” “Damn; you’re right… Those perky puppy’s are already those of a model.” He shook his head in defeat, a sigh escaping him as he held his hand to his head. “Alas, we shall never know why your wolf never came.” “It didn’t?!” Fuck me… Drew had been too loud and I had been distracted. Pricilla and her posse had been around the very corner we were turning to get to my algebra class, all of them stopping their chatter and staring at the both of us. “Oh, this is too good to be true!” Debra started laughing, her Buckstarry coffee almost spilling on the floor as Pricilla grabbed her arm as she laughed. “The outcast is really a nobody now!” Amy, the number three in the group, snorted as she pulled out her phone and started texting something. Within mere moments, a chorus of dings went down the hallway, almost everyone’s phone getting a notification. Drew’s phone pinged too, he giving me a sheepish look as he pulled it out to check it. “Sorry; she always had the best gossip to follow on Chitter.” Pretty soon, I could hear the low chatter of the student body around us as everyone started talking about the news. “f**k, did yah hear? Hazel didn’t get her wolf!” “Serves her right, she’s not pack anyway.” “Outclassed and outcast, she should have never been allowed in the pack.” Pretty soon, a throng of student surrounded me and Drew, all of them coming to look and jeer at me. “Why did you even bother coming to school? You have no wolf, no friends, and no connections. You’ll get nowhere here.” Pricilla sneered at me, her posse shaking their heads in agreement at that. “I’m her friend!” Drew protested as Pricilla rolled her eyes at him. “Just because you like charity cases and being ‘friends’ with the weird one just to make you look more different than just being the ‘gay’ wolf doesn’t count.” Debra laughed, a lot of the people gathered around me starting to laugh as well. “Matter of fact; you’re both perfect for each other!” Debra threw her coffee at us, the cold drink and cream spilling all over us while the onlookers laughed. Soon, others started throwing things at us too; water and sandwiches, a slice of tomato hitting right in the middle of my face as the bread and meat bounced off of me. “Quick! Here!” Drew grabbed my hand as we made a bealine to class, jeers of ‘no wolf, no wolf’ following us down the hall along with laughter on our state of dress. When we pulled open the doors the algebra room, Frank Holland looked up from his desk, the teacher having his glasses low on his face and making notes on a piece of paper. “Hazel, Drew; it’s not even first bell yet and they’re already starting that nonsense?!”
