Chapter 4

496 Words
Without realizing it, they finally arrived at a place far away from the city. Ryder immediately called someone to pick them up before someone started chasing them again. Not long after, a black luxury car appeared through the darkness. But strangely… No one stepped out to greet them. Left with no other choice, Ryder let out a frustrated sigh before pulling out his phone again. This time, he called his older brother. A few minutes later, another car arrived. A very expensive-looking black vehicle stopped right in front of them. Inside the car sat Ryder’s older brother in the back seat, while a driver remained silently in the front. The atmosphere inside the car was painfully tense. No one spoke. Not even once. Elena could feel cold fear creeping through her body as she quietly held onto Ryder’s hand beside her. Meanwhile, Ryder’s older brother remained completely focused on his work, barely even acknowledging their presence. Only the sound of rain tapping against the car windows filled the heavy silence inside the vehicle. Elena sat quietly beside Ryder, her fingers still wrapped tightly around his hand. Cold. That was the only thing she could feel right now. Cold fear. Cold silence. And the terrifying presence of the man sitting across from her. Ryder’s older brother remained focused on the document displayed on his tablet, calmly flipping through the pages as if nothing had happened tonight. No emotions. No questions. Nothing. Elena slowly lifted her eyes toward him. Sharp features. Dark suit. A luxury watch resting around his wrist. Everything about him screamed power. Even the air around him felt difficult to breathe. Suddenly— “You’re staring.” His deep voice cut through the silence instantly. Elena’s breath hitched. She immediately lowered her gaze, her heartbeat pounding violently inside her chest. “I-I’m sorry…” For the first time, the man finally looked up from his work. His cold eyes landed directly on her. And somehow… That felt even scarier than the gunshots earlier. “She doesn’t belong in this mess, Luca,” Ryder said quietly beside her. Luca leaned back against the leather seat, studying Elena carefully. Then he spoke again. “That depends.” Elena frowned slightly. “Depends on what?” A faint smirk appeared on Luca’s face. “On whether she already knows too much.” The atmosphere inside the car instantly turned suffocating. Elena’s grip on Ryder’s hand tightened. Meanwhile, Ryder’s expression darkened immediately. “Don’t scare her.” Luca let out a small chuckle before returning his attention to the tablet in his hand. “I’m not the one she should be afraid of.” Elena froze. What does he mean… he’s not the one I should be afraid of? she thought silently. Slowly, she turned her eyes toward Ryder beside her. Ryder avoided her gaze. Elena began to wonder... who Ryder Kane really was. And somehow… that scared her even more. To be continued.
