Episode 4:

I caught sight of Chloe and Victoria bowing their heads, twisting their handkerchiefs, lips sealed. They no longer appeared arrogant and self-assured as before, and suddenly I felt a surge of anger. I had never known that the deaths of the emperor and the prince would make me feel this angry. I turned away, sneaking out quietly, not wanting them to see me in this state. I thought, surely I must look radiant with joy. The atmosphere in the Martinez family today was somber, except for me. Chloe and Victoria didn’t come to the study to read as they usually did while I returned to the small courtyard, playing alone with a bag of sand. I crooned a folk song, feeling extremely happy inside. Without the Phoenix’s prophecy, at least the gap between me and them wouldn’t be so great. Though father was also anxious, waiting for Beta William to arrive, it was all in vain. Apart from the prince, King Lycan only had Princess Emma, with no other sons. It was said that King Lycan suddenly passed away, leaving no heir apparent. Alpha Johnson, the uncle, seized power unilaterally. Five days later, the prince of Alpha Johnson passed away. The body of the late king was kept in the coffin for several days, and in the hot weather, it emitted an unpleasant odor. When I heard the excited expression on the servant’s face as he recounted everything we already knew, I bit my lip. Who would have thought that the prince, after all, would suffer such indignity upon his death? Half a month later, Beta William finally came back. Father welcomed him eagerly, as if seeing a savior. I, too, was excited, simply wondering if Jeremy had come. Following father, I sneaked behind a column in the hallway, only to see father and Beta William conversing, but no sign of Jeremy. I couldn’t help feeling disappointed. Just as I was about to turn around, someone suddenly touched my shoulder, saying, “Mia!” I turned around in surprise to see Jeremy winking at me, holding back laughter. “Why do you like to hide in dark corners to spy on others?” I wore a displeased expression, but inside, I was overjoyed, pretending to playfully hit him. “I like it, and you can’t stop me!” He didn’t get angry, still smiling, and said, “Come here, follow me!” With that, he grabbed my hand and ran outside. “Hey, what are you doing?” I asked, but he didn’t respond, just chuckled softly while his steps were swift. When we reached the gate, I hesitated a bit. His grip on my hand didn’t loosen as he pulled me outside. The servants at the gate saw it was Beta William’s son, and no one dared to say much. I spotted a carriage parked outside, and the coachman, upon seeing Jeremy approach, quickly bowed his head and stepped aside. Finally, Jeremy let go of my hand, climbed into the carriage, and pulled out a bundle of clothes, handing it to me, saying, “Here, for you!” For me? I widened my eyes in surprise, seeing him nodding. I stepped forward curiously, taking the bag of clothes he offered and carefully opened it. The feeling of silk slipping through my fingers was soft and warm, the intricate embroidery causing a slight pain as it touched my fingers, yet I couldn’t help but smile... The attire was exquisite, truly exquisite... I was so engrossed that I didn’t notice Jeremy nudging me, smiling, asking, “Mia, do you like it?” I nodded vigorously. “I love it, I really love it!” “Then why don’t you try it on?” Seeing me express my liking, Jeremy became even more delighted, pushing me into the carriage to try on the new outfit, his excitement surpassing mine. I agreed and quickly jumped into the carriage. I let down the curtain of the carriage, and Jeremy’s voice came from outside, echoing into the carriage, “Originally, I wanted to measure your size to have the clothes made, but when I went to find David, the master tailor, he said he already had your measurements. It’s really great!” Master tailor David? Wasn’t he the one who made clothes for Victoria on her birthday? At that time, he made them according to my measurements! I took a deep breath. Could my luck finally be turning? Finishing the last button, I raised my hand to pull back the carriage curtain, smiling brightly at Jeremy. “Jeremy, it’s truly perfect!” He stood still in front of me for a while before gently saying, “Mia, you... you look truly beautiful!” I tilted my head and saw his cheeks flush, incredibly adorable, making me want to pinch them. Jumping off the carriage, standing tall, I proudly declared, “Of course, I’ve always been beautiful!” I resembled my mother a lot. Everyone said my mother was exquisite, so I must be beautiful too. Jeremy still gazed at me for a while, then chuckled softly, seriously saying, “In the future, I will give you many, many beautiful clothes!” I felt joyful inside but said, “Why do you want to give me beautiful clothes?” “Um...” He thought for a moment before smiling. “Because you like them.” “Just because I like them, you’ll give them to me?” “That’s right, as long as you like them, I’ll give you anything!” This was just a casual remark from a child, but it was also a promise he made to me. Many years later, I could still deeply feel that Jeremy never broke his promises to me. Carefully holding the bundle of new clothes, I happily returned to my room to store them properly before heading out again. Jeremy was very obedient, sitting in the courtyard waiting for me. When he saw me running over, he stood up, flashing a sweet smile. I dragged him to play the sandbag tossing game. No one had ever played with me before; I always played alone. Today, having someone willing to play with me made me so happy, but Jeremy truly didn’t know how to play. He struggled at times, gritting his teeth, but he always failed to catch the sandbag, dropping it every time. I scolded him for being silly, but he didn’t get angry, just chuckled sheepishly. I shook my head, not understanding why his temperament was so good, making me unable to get angry. Holding the sandbag in my hand, I casually asked, “Jeremy, what official position does your father hold?” “He’s a Ministry of Education chief.” “The Ministry of Education chief is a prominent official position, right?” “Yeah... Let’s just say it’s high!” “Okay.” Actually, “let’s just say it’s high” was quite vague, and I didn’t understand. Glancing at him, seeing him still trying to toss the sandbag in his hand from time to time, with sweat dripping from his forehead, I asked again after a while, “What did your father come here for today?” He didn’t look at me, focused on his movements, and whispered, “My father said King Lycan just passed away, so if you want to recruit a wife, you’ll have to wait a few more years. Huh, it won’t be too late, not even three years! Oh, no...” He was about to catch the sandbag, but because of a slight mistake, it slipped from between his fingers.
