Episode 13:

Perhaps it was because of Gregory’s words that I wasn’t too disappointed about Jeremy’s failure to meet the request. The only thing I knew was that he had surely tried his best. Perhaps I oversimplified things; the wife selection wasn’t just child’s play, and a single word from me couldn’t change it. I smiled at him, shook my head, and said, “It’s okay, no need to blame yourself.” Jeremy’s pale face seemed to flush in an instant, and he eagerly asked, “You’re not entering the palace anymore, right?” His long fingers held my hand, his eyes glowing. I hesitated, gently withdrew my hand from his grasp. Turning away, I didn’t know how to face him. Jeremy hurriedly stepped forward, resting his hand on my shoulder, furrowing his brow and saying, “Mia, I know, I know everything. You’re a proud girl. You wouldn’t want to be my concubine. I promise you, one day, Jeremy will grandly escort you to the door using an eight-horse carriage. I only want you, okay?” His words flowed like a warm stream, warming the coldness of the early winter days. His smile was like a sparkling light, fading away the worries between my eyebrows. I felt dumbfounded. This was Jeremy, the Jeremy I had known for three years. My heart raced wildly, trembling, my breath somewhat erratic as I looked at the man in front of me, realizing that he understood everything I wanted. He understood I was unwilling, understood my pride, understood the patience I had endured for years. But marrying me would bring him disgrace; could he truly decide on his own? Even if he could decide, could I truly must be the Martinez family’s concubine? I shook my head gently. “No, Jeremy, this time let let me do what I want.” I wasn’t a girl who needed others to protect me; I never had been. He clenched his teeth and said, “Mia, it’s not possible...” “Not possible!” I coldly interrupted. Seeing the sparkle fade from his eyes, I gently closed mine, afraid I would soften. A man who transcended social norms like Jeremy needed a better woman by his side, while I was too mediocre. He slowly released the hand he had been holding tightly, took a few steps back, leaned against the hallway column, and chuckled softly. I pursed my lips but didn’t know what to say. Finally, he spoke, “I... I’ll figure something out for you.” After saying that, he turned and left. “Jeremy!” I hurriedly called out. Seeing him trembling, I gently said, “There’s no need. I know you’ve tried your best, thank you!” He turned back; the sunlight shining on his tilted face, tinting it with a hint of tenderness, as if there was and wasn’t. I stood facing him, but it felt like we were miles apart. Jeremy looked straight into my eyes for a long time... a long time... Gradually concealing his desolation, he replaced it with a pure smile and said, “I once said, as long as it’s what you want, I’ll give it to you. Today is no exception.” Still the same pampering words as before, but why did I feel like crying? He took a half step forward, reached out and gently stroked my face. His demeanor was cautious, his movements gentle as if touching a precious porcelain, a little forceful, and it would break. “Jeremy...” “Say nothing!” He interrupted me, smiling with resignation. “No need to thank me forever.” “Master! Master!” Behind him, a servant in a livery ran over, panting, and said, “Master, Beta William is urgently looking for you!” That dawn, when Jeremy left, all I saw was the loneliness on his face. Even the sunlight seemed to be dimmer. There was a faint sound behind me; I turned my head and saw the stony face of a girl. “Sister!” I bowed my head and said. At this moment, Victoria stepped forward, turned her head to look in the direction Jeremy had just left, and said, “You do not need Is it that Master Jeremy’s sincere heart, Amelia? What do you want in the end?” This was the first time I saw Victoria lose her composure like this. It turned out that in the Martinez family, understanding how to conceal one’s thoughts, how to be patient, wasn’t just something I did alone. I just smiled slowly. I spoke, each word clear and precise, “Whatever I want, you’ll see it in the future.” After speaking, I didn’t care about her and walked away. But in that moment, I saw a flash of indignation in her eyes, quickly disappearing. I snorted softly, not bothering to care. Gregory was right; a harmless appearance could hide a fierce beast. What I didn’t understand was why, after disguising herself for so long, she couldn’t hold back today? Victoria didn’t call me, nor did she move. I grabbed a handkerchief and walked faster. The night was chilly as water. I stood quietly by the window. The moonlight was bright, thin clouds drifting, cold mist clinging to the leaves outside the window... I remembered Gregory’s words, Emily’s words, and the man’s words, suddenly coming up with an idea. Turning away from the room, I headed straight to the servants’ quarters in the mansion. It wasn’t late, but the lights were already out in Emily’s room. Feeling somewhat strange, I looked around, saw no one, and finally approached that room. I faintly heard breathing, soft and tender, accompanied by rough, heavy breaths emanating from the room. My heart raced, silently clenching my teeth. Emily was really bold; the servants in the mansion knew they would be punished if discovered, so why would they dare... I was thinking, unsure of what to do. Suddenly, I heard the sound inside grow quieter, followed by the man’s voice echoing out: “Wait, is there someone outside?” After that, I heard him shifting on the bed. I took a step back, pondering, but still stood there. With the knowledge that the door was surely locked, I took a deep breath, raised my hand, and knocked. Tap, tap, tap. “Who?” Emily’s voice was clearly trembling. The man inside immediately fell silent, only the sound of things colliding. I chuckled inwardly; now they were scared? I said, “Amelia.” The person inside exclaimed in surprise, hesitantly asking, “Th... the third young lady, it’s so late, do you have something...” “I have something for you.” I interrupted her, adding, “There’s no one here now. Hurry and open the door!” My heart became tense; if I stepped in, would they resort to violence? But I wanted to take a chance. After a while, Emily finally opened the door. Previously, her gaze towards me lacked respect, but tonight, perhaps startled, there was a hint of fear. I didn’t look at her, just walked straight in. “Third young lady!” She tried to stop me, but I stepped in first. Sure enough, she was trying to hide! But I didn’t expose her. I signaled for her to close the door, then casually sat down, looking up at her. She seemed startled, fidgeting and bowing her head, hands twisting together.
