“Who sent this?” I asked while my voice is shaking. I don't know what's happening and I'm freaking out.
“I don’t know,” he replied too quickly in a firm voice while his gaze was still sharp. He never took his sight off of them.
I can see now the sharpness in his gaze. His eyes scanned the surroundings with precision, alert and calculating. I stood there, frozen and unsure what I am scared of. Should I be afraid of him, of this man.....the men around us, watching our every move? Ormay be... I should fear the unknown things that might happen.
Then, without a word, his eyes found mine. And in that brief second, everything else faded away......the tension in the air, the weight pressing on my chest, the uncertainty at my thoughts. All I saw were his eyes that softens. There was something in his gaze..... As if he was telling me without words, “Trust me. I won’t let anything happen to you.”
And somehow, I believed him. Even with the fear pulsing in my veins and the thousand questions swirling in my head, I took the risk and chose to trust him. Maybe it was foolish. Maybe it was too soon. But something inside me whispered that he wouldn’t let me fall. That he wouldn’t let me get hurt. And I just hope I’m right. I hope… he meant what his eyes said.
“Tell me the truth—”
“No time,” he cut me off, grabbing my wrist. “We have to go. Now. Please....trust me.”
I heard it before I saw it......the sharp slam of a car door, then another. The men in black suit is moving toward us, fast.
“Run,” he said, pulling me with him.
I didn’t hesitate......not even when my heels scraped against the pavement and nearly twisted beneath me. He reached the car first and yanked the passenger door open, and motioned me in with urgency. I threw myself inside, breath shaky, heart racing. Then he slammed the door behind me and ran around to the driver’s side.
The moment he got in, the engine roared. At the same time, a black SUV turned the corner behind us, fast. Its headlights flashed like cold eyes, locked onto us like prey.
“What the hell is going on?” I demanded, gripping the door handle as fear surged through me.
“I’ll explain later,” he said quickly. “Seatbelt.”
The car screeched as he jammed the gearshift and floored the gas. We shot out of the narrow alley and the tires are screaming against the asphalt. My body slammed back against the seat from the force.
I turned in my seat, my hands trembling as I looked out the back window. The SUV was right behind us.....too close. It had no license plate, windows blacked out like shadows. And they weren’t just following us because they were chasing us.
“They’re chasing us!” I gasped, panic setting in. “Who are they?!" But he didn’t answer.
“Windham!” I shouted, my voice cracking.
“Yes!” he snapped, eyes locked on the road. “They’re after me. And now they’ve seen you with me.” He exclaimed that made my breath catch so I stared at him, heart pounding against my ribs.
“What did you do?” I whispered, barely able to speak. “Why would anyone come after you like this?”
He kept his eyes on the road, jaw clenched, hands tight on the wheel. “I don’t know if it’s about me,” he muttered. “Or you.”
I blinked. “Me?”
“There’s something happening, something bigger than you know,” he said. “But one thing’s clear because they just want to separate us. Whatever they’re after, they want to keep you and me apart.”
My blood ran cold. “What are you talking about?” I asked, voice sharp with confusion.
He shot me a quick glance and his eyes are full of something......regret and guilt.
“There’s something I didn’t tell you,” he admitted.
I exhaled shakily. Of course there was. There always was.
“Windham, if you know something, if this is about me, I deserve to know—”
Suddenly, he cut the wheel hard, turning down a side road so fast my shoulder slammed into the door. The city lights blurred past us as we tore through unfamiliar streets.
“I’ll tell you everything,” he said under his breath. “But not now. Not while they’re still behind us.”
I looked back again. The SUV was gaining.
The car swerved through narrow streets, cutting through side roads and dipping under old overpasses. He drove fast, weaving between cars and barely slowing down. The black SUV was still behind us, following every turn we made.
I held tightly to the edge of my seat, my heart pounding.
“Where are we even going?” I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.
“Somewhere safe,” he replied without looking at me.
“And where exactly is safe for someone like you?” I asked again, louder this time but he didn’t answer. Instead, he reached over and grabbed my hand....his grip was firm and warm, even as the world outside flew past us in a blur.
“I don’t know what you think of me right now,” he said, his voice calm even though everything around us was chaos. “But I swear, I’m not going to let them touch you. Not now. Not ever.”
The car suddenly jerked to the left. We entered a dark tunnel. The walls were dirty and narrow, and the headlights made long shadows dance across them. My chest felt tight, like something bad was about to happen.
“Tell me what’s going on,” I said, staring at him. “The truth, Windham. No more half-answers.”
He looked in the rearview mirror. The SUV was gone.
He let out a long breath. “Alright,” he said. “But when I tell you… you won’t be able to un-know it.”
My heart pounded louder. I stared at him, wide-eyed. “Tell me anyway.”
He opened his mouth to speak but before a single word left his lips—
BANG.
The windows exploded and glass shattered all around us that made me screamed. Then suddenly everything turns black.
