The Betrayal

Thwack! The sound of Milan's hand hitting my cheek echoed in my mind. I felt a burn as my head snapped to the side. Milan cried, her eyes welling with tears, "How could you, Erica?! How could you try to kill me?" My eyebrows pulled together into a furrow at her words. This was not the first time Milavn attempted to frame me for something I did not do, but it was the first time she accused me of something so evil. I opened my mouth to speak, but the tension all around me made it hard for me to form the words. Another slap from Milan silenced me once more. "I have been nothing but kind to you, why would you do this to me?!" More tears streamed down Milan's eyes as she was held by the man I called my mate. Cain Balor, the one they called the Alpha of Alphas, the Alpha of the Bloodhorn Pack, was one of the most dangerous Packs of modern times. He was my miate but he was also my personal hell. This was a man I loved with all my heart, a man I would tear out my heart for and give it to him if he asked. But he was also a man that would never love me… Not in this lifetime. Why? Becavuse my mate was currently holding the woman he loved, the only woman he would ever love. His first and true love…. Milan Dolores. And I, who happened to be his mate, was just a bump on their road to happiness. "Erica," I raised my head upon hearing Cain's deep It wias only one word, but it demonstrated that he once again trusted Milan over me. "I d-don't know w-what s-she's talking about, I d-didn't do a-anything!" I cursed myself for stammering in such a circumastance but my defect wouldn't spare me at any time. I saw the way the guests at the party all cringed as they heard my stammer. Thenre was a rumor about the Alpha's damaged mate but they weren't aware of just how defective I was. A stammerer. I knew I should've stayed in my room while they celebrated Milan's birthday. "You're still lying? You're still pretending?" Milan asked with venom in her tongue. She reached into her purse and pulled out her phone. I didn't know what she was doing until I heard a voice that sounded exactly like mine. 'Nobody will know, Milan. I'll throw your body in the quarry with the fishes, nobody will ever suspect, you'll die alone and by my hand!' That was my voice. My heart sank upon hearing a voice that sounded exactly like mine. If my anxiety was at its peak before it had certainly soared through the sky now. That was my voice! 'I'll tell Cain, he won't let you h-hurt me!' Came Milan's voice. She sounded so scared in the recording, contrary to the venomous tone she always had whenever she was alone with me. 'Where's your evidence? Why would Cain ever believe you without evidence?' My heart was racing fast. I didn't know where this recording came from except that wasn't me. I clutched my hand on my stomach. "Th-that's not m-me, I d-didn't say t-those t-things!" I was quick to defend myself. I didn't understand where the recording had come from. I didn't understand why Milan was also going as far as accusing me of murder. All these people here were staring at me spitefully. I knew the pack members of Bloodhorn didn't like me but right now it felt like me against the world. "You're denying that's your voice?" Cain asked, his onyx dark eyes descending down on me. I nodded. "Y-yes, please, A-Alpha t-that's n-not me!" I begged. Cain left Milan's side and came over to stand at my very front. I could smell his unique scent of sandalwood, and smoke, one that always seemed to make me purr inside. His hand abruptly caught my jaw, painfully forcing me to keep my eyes on him. "You dare to lie to me, Erica?" He asked, his voice hoarse and deeper than usual. "After everything Milan has done for you? This is how you pay her back?" Tears had begun turning my eyes glassy. I shook my head, feeling the hate and disgust ooze from him. We were mates, I could practically feel how intense his disgust was for me, it bathed me and made my insides turn. Just like how I could always feel it when he was f*****g Milan. I could hear the whispers from the Pack members of how incompetent I was, how much of a snake I was. My heart squeezed. "P-Please believe m-me, I w-would n-never!" I choked out. He stared at me directly into my eyes. For a moment, just a short moment I thought he had listened to my pleas, that he believed me. "Bjorn," He called out to his beta. The tall blond-haired man came forward with a wide envelope in his hand. Bjorn. Bjorn pulled out a couple of pictures from the envelope. In some of the pictures was a woman who looked strikingly similar to me, and she was kissing some guy I hadn't met before. And then another picture, the same woman who looked like me with yet again another guy holding hands in a restaurant. Then there were some pictures of text messages. Texts from my number to Milan, where I was threatening her. Color faded from my face. My heart had never beat faster than it was now. The evidence stacked against me was unshakable. I didn't know who these people were and why there was a woman who looked like me in the pictures. "N-No, t-these c-can't be r-real! Th-These aren't m-me!" I sputtered out, my legs wobbling, making me fall to the ground. "Save some of your dignity, Erica," Cain started. "If there is even any left. Stop lying and admit to crimes, maybe I'd consider letting you go." My eyes snapped up. "L-letting me g-go?" "He called the cops, Erica," Milan said. "It's over." It's over. My body trembled. "C-Cops?! B-But I d-didn't do a-anything!" Cain looked down at me, those eyes had never looked at me with warmth before but this time around it was worse… It was pure hatred emitting from them. "C-Cain, p-please, you k-know me! I w-wouldn't do s-something l-like this!" I pleaded to him, my hands latching onto his legs. "Do not utter the Alpha's name, runt!" Bjorn boomed. Cain placed a hand on Bjorn's chest, gesturing for him to stop. He crouched down before me, his hand grabbing a fistful of my hair, making me hiss out in pain. "I was going to give you an out," Cain sneered, his face just a breath away from mine. "For the fact that you have been with me for a while, I hoped you would tell the truth… I was going to let you walk away." I didn't let go of my hands as he viciously held a fistful of my hair. "Y-You a-are g-going to b-banish me!" My eyes widened in realization. Cain shook his head. "Not anymore. Letting you live as a rogue is too good for you… You deserve to rot in prison for your crimes." Hot tears dropped from my eyes. My hands around his legs trembled. "P-Please Cain, b-believe me, I d-didn't do a-any of t-these t-things." His fingers tightened around my hair, making me whimper. "You f*****g disgust me," My heart squeezed at his words. "I, Cain Balor of the Bloodhorn Pack, reject you, Erica Jameson, as my mate!" My heart shattered. My hands dropped from his legs and I felt my body go cold. He… he rejected me? I shook my head. "N-No—" "And if you value your life I suggest you accept the rejection—" "N-No," I shook my head again, refusing to accept this reality. He raised my head to look at him through my hair. "Listen to me, Erica! I will f*****g kill you if you don't accept the rejection!" More tears just kept flowing. I felt like the core of my life had been shattered. I'd always known Cain Balor would never love me, but rejection? Having Milan as his side piece wasn't enough anymore? He would reject his goddess-given mate? I shook my head. It felt like life was drained out of me. "Then kill me," I whispered, unable to feel any pride from not stammering this time. "You conniving w***e," Milan shrieked, obviously not expecting me to choose death. Cain let go of my hair, leaving me on the ground like discarded property. "It doesn't matter whether you accept the rejection or not, Erica," he looked me dead in the eyes. "Since when have the words of a runt ever mattered anyway?" I didn't have the time to feel the s***h of pain from his words when I heard new footsteps. I looked over to find policemen standing over at Milan's side. "Take her away," Cain said. "A murderer has no place being Luna. I don't want to ever see her face again." The policemen grabbed my arm as they began to drag me away. "C-Cain!" I screamed. "C-Cain p-please d-don't let t-them take m-me away!" He continued staring at me, without saying a word. I could hear more mutters that condemned me but all my attention was focused on Cain. "C-Cain! C-Cain!" I watched as Milan leaned against his chest and he wrapped his arms around her. Milan smirked, staring at me from the corner of her eyes. My heart sank. "C-Cain?" Was all I could whisper.
