“If you don’t want to hurt her, I’d tell you to let her go,” he said. “But I know you won’t. s**t, I wouldn’t. She seems like a nice girl, to be honest. I never wanted to be an asshole with her, but I had a job to do for you and my superiors.”
I wasn’t surprised by his words, only happy he was being honest. We were in the moment of sharing.
“If you like, when it’s time to leave, I can make it like you died …”
The look of confusion on my face made him smile. But I understood what he meant. He was serious, of course. I’d heard of it being done before but it was rare.
“Joseph, you would do that for me?”
“Kid, there is nothing I wouldn’t do for you … it’s my job. There is still a lot you don’t know about guardianship and bodyguards. Saying we go above and beyond is an understatement.”
