One Monday morning right in the middle of the famous main highway of the city, Olivia awaits at the usual long lines of cars. Her car stuck almost halfway through her destination, which she estimates to be a few kilometers away and half an hour of drive because of the traffic. She plays a pop song in her car, but since it was seven her mood and spirit haven’t arrived yet. In routing Olivia drinks a big cup of coffee, but she didn’t sleep early yesterday night, therefore she paid the consequences of getting up late. A start in the morning without coffee makes her mind force her entire body to be exhausted, and half senses awake from reality.
The deafening lengthy air horns from different cars around her, create loud high pitched noise. It causes Olivia’s head to be sorer. She turned the music a bit higher and locked the car windows for the sound of car horns will be minimized.
In under five minutes, her car can now move by only a few inches. These tiny movements make the car move bumpily, because of the little stops, yet the worst part is it results in people turning up behind their schedules, which includes Olivia.
As predicted, the traffic caused her half an hour before she arrives at the gigantic infrastructure of the city hall. Olivia went straight to the place before she proceeds at the police station, because it is the only time she can meet Mayor May due to the help of his secretary.
She stops by a donut shop beside the city hall and buys a cup of coffee, and in no time she regains her full senses back, then goes into the city hall.
Inside, Olivia approaches a receptionist at the information desk. She greeted them first before and later on told her purpose of visiting “I am here for a meeting with Sir. Martin May”.
“He’s not here yet”, the receptionist said, “but once he arrives you will be the first person to have a meeting with him”, she said.
“Excuse me?”, Olivia uttered in disbelief “His secretary even told me to arrive earlier than six forty, then you’re telling me Mayor May is not here yet?”, she asked
The receptionist apologized and told Olivia she can do nothing with it, but seeing her police uniform she promises to help her through a call with Martin May’s secretary. This recommendation didn’t lighten up the burst of infuriating emotion Olivia builds in her chest, actually, the receptionist made it a bit worse, because Olivia knows even through a call she can’t summon the mayor if Martin is the one who impedes the questioning. Still, Olivia takes a deep breath and a few seconds to calm herself, and maintain her decorum.
“All right, I understand, but do what you must do”, she said to the receptionist.
The receptionist offers Olvia a seat in a little empty room, containing a couple of grey couches, a tall plant in a pot on every side at the front, and a glass table. Olivia sits on the couch from the right side and waited. She took out her laptop from her black shoulder bag and continues her unfinished work instead of her time going into waste while she waits.
She looks at her wristwatch every ten minutes of her estimation to see the current time. Eight in the morning strikes and Martin May hasn’t arrived yet. Olivia fears he might cancel the meeting again, thus she picked up her phone and called the number, which she got from Martin’s secretary.
After a few rings and tries in a few minutes, Martin finally answers the call. Olivia greeted h
with all respect, and Martin did the same to her. She then asks if their meeting will take place today because she’s been ecstatic to see him in person. Although it was nothing but lies, she has to throw little kind words since Martin is not a person you can see in one’s everyday life. He’s a powerful politician, with a stronghold in his position, Olivia must be careful in her words because in one wrong slip she can lose her life. However, Martin can cause no fear in her heart, unless he targets her loved ones. This is the reason Olivia always looks closely at every step she takes.
Back in the call, Martin assures her, he’ll be there in fifteen minutes. The two settles down and the call ended in agreement.
Olivia closes her laptop and places it back in her bag since any time now, Martin can be at the city hall. Her decision was right and Martin arrives earlier than expected. The receptionist called Olivia from the room and outside the mayor’s secretary waits for her.
When Olivia and the secretary meets, the two greeted each other with a smile across their faces and a few chitchats making them like old friends, but this is far from reality because this is the first time they met. Olivia can’t figure out how she felt light-hearted to this man, perhaps being around a joyous and loud person comforts her.
The secretary leads Olivia to her boss’s office. Along their way, the two chatted about Martin May since Olivia brought up the topic, on what was he like. She has to know how to treat their mayor, the things he loves and makes him mad. The secretary told her Martin is easily angered and an extreme machiavellian, praising him is the best thing to leave a good impact and impression on him. Olivia notes every word of the tips in her mind. She starts to formulate the approach she’s going to take once she met Martin May.
The elevator dings and its doors open. A hallway with many door rooms shows up, at the middle is what the secretary told her the biggest of them all because it is the mayor’s office. The secretary first walked and Olivia follows behind her.
The secretary knocked three times on the wooden door, then a man’s voice barks signal to come inside the office. The moment the two women entered, the secretary locks the door and presents Olivia to her boss Martin May.
“No one said I’ll be meeting a pretty woman, I should have rescheduled earlier”, Martinal May stands up and stretches his suit.
“You flatter me, sir”, Olivia chuckles a little.
She steps closer and closer to him, and offers her hand, “It’s nice to meet you sir”, she said with a smile. Martin May grasps tight on her hand and shakes it “Nice to meet you too, please have a seat”, he said. The two sits down and Olivia pulls up an iPad and a pen from her bag since she left her notebook in her office at the station.
“I’ll say, sir, I am so happy to meet you, I didn’t realize you are a warm person”, she said before saying any questions.
“Well, actually almost all the people I know said the same thing”, Martin smiles
“Perhaps it is one of the reasons you won in the election, you warmed the icy hearts of the citizens here”, she then leans forwards, “Including me”.
Martin laughs and points his finger at her “I like you...but I hope you’ll always be my supporter, even in this case”, he said.
Olivia giggles and nods a bit, yet no words of promise are released from her mqouth. She then
brought the topic of her purpose in the place through a little segway of praises not to make the questioning feel serious and heavy.
“I must say, being overshadowed can bury talents and gifts”, Olivia utters out of nowhere. Martin pauses and looks at Olivia’s face, with no expression, “What do you mean by that?”, he asked.
“People mourns over the death of the former Mayor Sotto, but if you overshadow his achievements people will forget him, and even this case would probably even be dissolved”, Olivia said to him, to bring hope in his mind and influence his emotions.
“Is it possible?”, he said in curiosity
“Absolutely”,
Martin pauses and his face went blank again, “Well I like the idea but do you think I could pull it off?”, he asked,
“Of course, sir!”, she said in delight, but her words brought suspicion to Martin..
“Why are you doing this?”, he said,
“Because I am your fan”, Olivia’s eyes widen and dazzle,
“You want power and influence do you?”,
“ A little”, she said, which causes Martin to laugh once more, “I knew it, I like you, Ms. Clark”, he said with a grin on his face, “Tell me, what are you trying to offer, and what could I do to help you”, he added.
“Simple, help me investigate everything about Halbert Sotto and every evidence you find, destroy it”, she uttered in conviction.
“Why would I?”
“Because in the people’s eyes you are their first suspect of the murder of their beloved mayor”, she said,
“And if I destroyed it?”,
“Case closed, no one has to find out”, she said
“But I am wrongly accused, I didn’t kill him!”, he said
“You didn’t”, Olivia asked. The moment she have been waiting for has arrived, Olivia decided not to question him in a direct manner, instead, he was the one who bursts out the information.
Martin then leans forward to her and said, “Look, what I initially planned is to cheat in the election, I have no intention of killing him, or else I would put myself in my own gallows”,
“You mean, Halbert can kill a person?”, Olivia throws in a bit of surprise
“Of course, when he was alive he eliminated three of his political enemies!”, Martin uttered
“Sir, can you name them?”, she takes the opportunity to ask questions until Martin is in the middle of his burning emotion.
Martin then names three former politicians who died drastically. The Gomez brothers reigned congressmen in the city for five years and councilor Benson. Olivia notes it on her device, without looking much on it. Her eyebrows frown when she stares at Martin. “Is this true?”, she asked, still shocked by the information she was told.
“I think you’re smart enough to figure it out”, Martin said. He then stands up and picked up a box cigarette from the drawer beside him. Martin took a piece, grabbed the lighter on her desk, and lights up the cigarette.
“Mr. Hopkins is close to him”, Martin uttered out of nowhere.
“Mr. Hopkins you say?”, she asked in puzzlement. Martin nods and puts the cigarette behind his lips, afterwards he blows the smoke, which now travels all around the office.
“To whom?”, Olivia takes a guess not to make a fool in front of the mayor
“Who else?”, Martin sneers, “Have you seen how expensive Halbert’s campaign is, even the last event he attended for the campaign was outrageously lavish!” He looks at her eyes and puffs out another cloud of smoke.
Olivia can’t grasp the details Martin gives her about Glen. He was known in the country for funding a lot of politicians, it is hard to pinpoint the reason he and the former mayor is connected with the crimes Martin tells her is because of the money he invested in his campaign. Olivia then doubts herself, is she taking a calculated guess or she thinks of a reason to defend Glen from herself.
“How do you say so?”, she asked to clarify Martin’s point.
“I think you have still no idea”, Martin sits back on his chair.
“Well can you tell me more about it sir?”,
“You are an investigator, isn’t that your job to find out?”, He uttered with a bit of a tease,
Olivia mentions, he has to answer all the questions because it’s a law, she then added in conviction, the law is what puts him in his current position. Although her words are a heavy warning, still she delivers them in a calm and polite tone. However, Martin smiles and said, “I am a politician I make the laws”. He looks at the mini clock on his desk and reminds Olivia he was a busy person and he must now attend his meeting at once.
Olivia uttered no more replies, but gratitude for Martin’s cooperation. Before leaving, Martin leaves a few words intended for her.
“I guess, you are not rooting for power at all”, he smirks, “Don’t worry I’ll let you pass this time...I like you Ms. Clark”, Martin then said goodbye afterwards.
