Mission

The bright rays of sun scorches, when Olivia arrived at the police station in uniform, ready for her everyday work. She enters the same glass manual doors and greeted the policeman sitting at the information desk, Emmy’s boyfriend, in a warm and energetic tone. “What a beautiful day!”, she told herself the moment she passes through the corridors leading her towards the office. The lightness in her chest stayed since yesterday and gives her a sense of elated happiness, yet she has no clue of the reason behind it. “Is it because of Alan?”, Olivia reminds herself of the sweet shy boy she met at the charity giving last afternoon. Yesterday, an hour before evening falls, Olivia and the boy arrives at the police station. They tried to find information, written records, or any details, which can help trace the identity of the boy, his parents, and where he came from. After a couple of hours of searching and with the help of five people including her friend Emmy, she managed to find a record of Alan's mother alone. The boy’s mother works as a former housekeeper in one of the well-known families in the city. All of a sudden, she died at the age of twenty-four without a husband, but she has a son named Alan, the kid who visited the charity giving. Alan has no written records of his father since his surname was derived from his mother. Olivia asked the boy if he has met his father before, and he answered a silent no. For now, the boy resides in the children’s social care in the city, he must felt alone, especially since Alan doesn’t love talking much, but Olivia was confident, he will be safer there than the streets filled with ill-intentioned people and cold, ravaged filthy corners, without the assurance if he can put a single bite of food in his stomach. Olivia’s heart eases and lightens when she reimagines in her mind, the boy’s present situation, yet her job is not yet over. She must find a family for him, it is better if Alan’s close family such as his uncles, old cousins, or grandparents adopts him. Still, the most important thing is for the boy to be safe and grow happy. Olivia can’t help the sudden movement of her lips to smile, this is her first time helping a child change its life. Although she did donations before, this time she helped the poor kid directly within her own ways. She reaches the door of her office and inserted a key unlocking the door. Olivia enters her office for a few seconds, when out of nowhere her phone buzzes. She picked it up from her bag and answers the call. It is her boss George Jarvis, who ordered her to come visit his office at once, Olivia asked for the reason, but George explained no more, therefore she complied and left her bag inside her office. In a minute she arrives at the doors, Capt. Jarvis's room was wide open, yet Olivia still knocked to alert him of her presence. “Come in!”, George told her. She gave her boss a short greeting, then she steps inside. “David Barker was seen again at a mall, conducting a heist on a jewelry store with five other men, yesterday. Now, he is on the run, it will be harder to catch him, I want you to stop his madness, especially his role, in this case, it must unfold”, he said walking from side to side. George then picked up an envelope and handed it to Olivia. He told her, the envelope contains the current information about David. He picked a cigarette from a can and lights it up. “Start tomorrow afternoon, because we have no time to lose, two other men will accompany you on this mission, and if things get complicated, don’t hesitate to contact the local police in that city, for backup”, he said blowing the cigarette smoke he placed in his mouth. He noticed Olivia’s eyes stuck into the open window at the back of his office, perceiving she has no interest in the information he gave to her, or her attention was grabbed and taken away by another thought battling in her head. He snaps his fingers in front of her and asked if she was listening. Olivia startled a bit, shook her head, and answered her boss through a nod. Every word going out from George’s mouth, she hears them all, her mind travels in circles, about the thought her life would be hanged in a thread once more. “I know it’s hard, but like what you've said, this is our profession, Lt. Day will do the same thing with you”, George smiles a bit the moment she looks at her. After their conversation was over, Olivia left the room straight-faced, and numb. She couldn’t understand the feeling why her heart echoes, is she scared for her safety? No, she has done cases such as this more than the number of fingers on both of her hands. Is she excited? Finally, her boss laid authority to conduct a big role in the investigation, and help forward the case, Yes. However, fear also struck in her heart, a fear of not seeing her loved ones anymore. Olivia walked step by step on the same corridors she passed earlier, light-hearted, yet now when she looks at the huge glass window at her right side, she sees water drops and slides on the glass. Some roll faster, and a few slides slow. A thunder follows afterward, startling Olivia a bit and bringing her back to the present situation, thus she proceeds to walk. She enters her office and locks its doors. Once she’s in, she sits and opens the envelope in her hands, and the paper first showed up, is basic information about David Barker. Height, 5’11, Weight 90kg, unmarried and have no children in the fifty years of his age. In his wild, dangerous lifestyle no wonder, he hasn’t built a family yet. This man must hold no fear towards any authorities, after a murder a couple of months ago, he didn’t hide nor cover his crimes. A shameful man still free and roams out in the midst of vulnerable citizens, it shakes her nerves. “My boss was right, this person must be caught at once”, Olivia told herself, but right now, she must not focus on this man, since she has a lot of time for the case when she begins the investigation tomorrow. No personal cellphones were allowed for her to carry, nor contacting other person related towards her, because it will put danger to their lives. What she needed to do, is to have a conversation with her loved ones. Olivia picked up her phone and conducted a video chat with her family since they lived in the rural parts of the country. One travel would take three hours, therefore Olivia was left with no other option. Fortunately, they answered in one dial. Olivia, her parents, and sister gathered in a call for about an hour. Their conversation goes over and over about the events happening in their lives, updating everyone in the family, or Olivia alone, since the rest of her family lives together. Smiles were evident across her family’s faces the moment her face shows up on her screen. If life could only give her another hour she would give it to her family. Olivia can’t eat much of her time with her family alone, she contacted her friends and spent the rest of her afternoon at the office calling them one after another. It is quite odd for her, all of them didn’t lapse from answering her call and having a talk with her. For Olivia it is a delight to hear their voices, therefore she ignored her observation, and focused on the next person she wanted to spend time with, Emmy. She goes towards her friend’s office but found her not in there. When Olivia asked one of their co-policeman, where Emmy is, the policeman informed her, Emmy was still busy. Her luck ran out, thus Olivia left a text to her friend, inviting her over dinner at a restaurant. Five in the afternoon strikes, hours from now, she has to leave for another city, but before it happens a person’s name whispers in her mind, Alan. Olivia drives her way towards the children’s social care, to check the kid’s situation, besides the place is a kilometer away, and it won’t take much travel time. When she arrives at the entrance gate, a cape cod house stands in the middle of the lot. If there were no signage hanging at the gates, people won’t notice it is a child social care. Even the path towards the house is a bit long, the shout and laughter of kids can be heard from afar. Olivia hoped Alan is one of those giggling children. She knocks at the open door and a young female social worker approached and greeted her. Olivia did the same, afterwards, she asks her if she can visit Alan. The social worker recognizes her from yesterday when she turned the boy over to their place, thus she no longer needs verification. During their walk, to Alan’s location, the social worker informed Olivia of the boy’s situation, since they found it concerning. “They boy might have depression”, she said, which made Olivia’s thoughts disturbed, she asks a series of questions, but all about the boy. “Is he eating the right amount every day? How does he feel? Perhaps something is hurting him…” and so on. The social worker assures her, they would never let an hour pass that the boy is left unchecked. Olivia and the social worker reached the first from the five rooms. “Alan stays in here, almost all day, he does, since yesterday he came out only twice, to get cleaned or if he uses the restroom” the social worker then opens the room. Alan sits alone in his white bed, staring at the glass drops from the rain at the glass window. Olivia steps closer towards him and called his name, “Alan”, she uttered, and the boy turned around. She sits beside him and holds his tiny tender hands, and asks about his day. “It’s fine”, he said, but his answer didn’t go with his expressionless face. Olivia touched the boy’s tender cheeks, “Why aren’t you with other children, don’t you want to play?”. The boy shakes his head. Behind his emotionless black round eyes holds a deep sorrow of emptiness, she can’t figure out, still, she must not let the boy fight his own battles alone. Olivia picked up the nearest toy on the ground, a medium-sized blue toy truck, she then invites the boy to play with her yet he uttered no reply. His reaction didn’t stop Olivia from acting silly, making faces, sounds, and scenarios using the toy truck like the main character. She wasn’t bothered at all, even if she has to dance, Olivia would still do it for Alan, and in no time her efforts bear fruits. In fifteen minutes the boy begins to smile a little and picked up a toy truck on his own. An hour passed, and the moon shows up in the half-dark sky. All her worries from her mission tomorrow fade, because of her bonding time with Alan, her heart jumps again from overjoy, when the boy’s spirit shows up a bit. Her friend, Emmy added the sparkle of happiness in her chest when she sent a message saying she accepted her invitation to dine in a restaurant with her. Oliva put the phone in her bag and talked with the boy before leaving. “I will be away for a couple of weeks but promise me, you’ll take care of yourself”, she said with a smile and the boy nodded, “When I come back, I’ll buy you any toy, you want, how about that?”, she then asks what type of toy the boy likes, and Alan pointed at the blue toy truck. Olivia agreed, and the two bid goodbye, and she walks out of the place. In her car, Olivia scrolls on her screen to find Emmy’s contact number, all of a sudden the list roll until the end. Heath’s name shows up, and Olivia recalls his face in her mind once more. The two haven’t talked for a while and her mission urges her to do so, but it seems Heath is fine in his life now, he didn’t even consider messaging her even with a short hi, therefore she didn’t make a move, to bother him.
