Subtlety

The white full moon shines in the night, its rays flash at Olivia’s window, inside the living room in her apartment. She gazes at the sky, from her window seat. Her eyes are on the moon, but her mind was far from appreciation of the beauty of the celestial body. She recalls every word, Jennifer stated, earlier that morning, all of them seem sincere and rooted into her heart, but her words, don’t seal the message she wanted to imply. Her expression and statement don’t go along in the same path, Olivia was sure Jennifer hides the truth from her, but what is it? Olivia sighs. Jennifer, says she knows nothing, not even a single piece of information, yet why did Halbert choose to bring her into the event instead of his wife. The decision Halbert made to let Jennifer accompany him at night can put his reputation at risk. She must be a pawn for his own intentions. Olivia stands up, grabs herself a cup of coffee, and moves to her desk, in her bedroom. She picked up a pen, a notebook, and wrote her observations down. “I have to validate her statement”, she uttered, and all of a sudden a whisper in her ears told her to go look at the picture once more. Olivia followed her instincts, she opened the envelope filled with Jennifer’s picture and gazes at it one by one, then stopped at Glen and Jennifer. The footage shows the angle at the top side of the room, thus it manages to capture their entire body. The picture of their faces was not clear, therefore Olivia relies on the position of their body. When she stares, Olivia noticed, Glen actually tries to drag Jennifer towards him because one of his arms were wrapped around her body, and his hand has a tight grip on her wrist. “It might be”, Olivia leans her back at the cushion of her chair, then she starts to write. Two probable answers appeal to the case. Glen and Jennifer might have a secret affair, it isn’t impossible, besides if they met the first time, why do they want to make out already? However, Olivia understands it could be the situation, people nowadays followed their desires, without second thoughts on the outcome, so Olivia writes a more notable answer. Halbert chose to bring Jennifer to the event, and seduce Glen for personal gains, but on the second thought why does he still need to use her, Glen already funded Halbert’s campaign for the election, they are basically allies. Olivia sighs once again, she understands Jennifer is the least probable suspect of the murder. Her presence with the mayor half an hour before he was killed is too reckless, besides the visitors at the event saw two going in the bathroom, through the CCTV footage. Olivia hopes, the death of the former mayor, will not root for a love affair, it is a waste of life, for a woman who might not even give importance to their presence. What she needs is an answer, not assumptions, but her quest would be in vain because of the next person she will interrogate tomorrow. Olivia gathered all the pictures at once and places them inside the envelope when all of a sudden her phone on the desk buzzes. The name of George Jarvis appears on her screen, therefore she answers it right away. Jarvis asked her, how the interrogation went and requested her to send a report to him tomorrow morning. Olivia takes her notes and explained every information she collected to her boss. “Sir, Ms. Norman’s statements….I don’t trust them”, Olivia said to him, “Why not? We haven’t proved anything yet”, Jarvis told her, “I guess, you’re right, sir, I should get more proof”, she uttered, then an idea crosses into her mind, “Sir, I was wondering if I can help you with the search, so the case will be clearer for me”, Olivia added. Jarvis laughs at her and said, “Don’t sweat yourself, this is my task, and I will always update you with the details, understood?”, Olivia doesn’t have a choice but to agree, so she didn’t argue any further, even though she has a strong urge, to involve herself with his boss’ task. It is a big case for Olivia, her life might be threatened but it is her job, and this might be her chance to get promoted. She set aside the idea for now, and focused on Jarvis’s instructions to her, during the call. The call lasted for an hour, after Olivia put her phone in the pocket of her pajamas she peeks at the time and was shocked at how fast time flies, It was six-thirty in the evening when she gazes at her windows, but now it is already eight. Olivia walks towards the door and opened it. She looked around outside her apartment, and there was nothing. It made her blood boil, and her veins pop, therefore she slams the door and locked it afterwards. She went back to the living room and sits on the couch. Olivia then turns on the television and crosses her arms, combined with a frown on her face. “Find a new home, and find a new girlfriend”, she whispered, then she gets her phone again and looked if there were pop-ups on her screen. After she knows it was all useless notifications she throws her phone at the pillows and proceeds to watch on the television. A couple of hours passed, and Olivia began to feel her eyes become dense. The dialogues on her TV screen were now murmurs in her ears. Olivia began to lose her perception of the present situation. She let herself finally close her eyelids, after a long day, all of her energy and will to move, left her heavy body, then out of nowhere, the three massive bangs on the door startles her entire nerves. “Who is it?”, she shouted “It’s me, Heath”, the voice behind the door said. Olivia rubs both of her eyes and gave her head a little shake. When she stands up, she drags her whole body to walk to the door. She opens it up, and her boyfriend, Heath shows up, “He….hey”, Health uttered in an undertone voice, but Olivia shouts at him, “It is already ten pm! Do you even want to come home?”, “I am sorry! look, we have to finish a lot of reports”, Heath pleaded, Olivia sneers to him, “Wow, so creative! Why don’t you become a writer, you always come up with stories”, she ridiculed him. “I said I am sorry, are we gonna repeat this again”, Heath complains. Olivia didn’t anticipate her boyfriend’s response over her, it made her want to tear him apart, but also it crumbles her heart. “Oh! All right! I am so sorry for being a concerned girlfriend, do you think I already forgave you the last time we fight, No!, but now, instead of fixing your mistakes, you made it worst!”, Olivia leaves the door open and dashes inside the bedroom. Olivia locked the doors, she couldn’t hold the tears in her eyes anymore. She jumps on the bed and covered half of her face with a pillow. Heath still stands at the door, after Olivia left her. He drops his bag on the couch and looked in the direction of the bedroom. He first sat down beside his bag. The fight between the two of them can’t be fixed at the moment, because the heat of anger and frustrations still leads in their head and the wall between their heart. However, Heath realizes he shouldn’t have complained to her in the first place, although he has an opinion of his own, it wasn’t the right time to vent it all out. They have fought twice in a week, their relationship is on shaky ground, if he continues to act like a douchebag, Olivia will leave him, and it is the last thing, he wanted to happen. Heath went to the bathroom and took a shower, afterwards he tries to gain all the strength and willpower hence he can talk to his girlfriend. He knocks thrice on the door, but there is no answer. He does it again, and Olivia still didn’t respond, thus Heath went back to the couch and slept there for the rest of the night. The next morning, a continuous loud sound rings and vibrates through Heath’s ears. He extended his right arm and tries to turn off the alarm from his phone, with his eyes close, but he can’t feel it. “Where is it?”, Heath questioned himself and gets up. There he noticed the phone chirps behind his pillow. He turned the alarm off and stretches his arms and all of a sudden the images of the events which happened last night haunt him back. Since hours had passed and now, both of them settled down, it is time for him to take a step and fix their problems. Heath first, went to the kitchen and prepared Olivia’s favorite breakfast, chocolate waffles with strawberries. He placed the utensils and plates at the top of the table mat. He poured hot coffee in two of their cups and at last, he decorated the table with plastic flowers on a tiny vase. He then walked towards his girlfriend’s room and knocked three times, “Love!”, he uttered behind the bedroom’s door and after a few seconds, it opens. Olivia shows up with her rumpled hair covering almost her entire face from side to side. Her eyes were still half open when she starts to step out of the room, “What time is it?”, she rubs her eyes. Heath smiles at her, then wipes her hair on the side. “It's six-thirty”, he looked into her eyes, “Still early isn’t it, lets go eat first”. Olivia stares at him for a few seconds, bewildered by his actions. Is he teasing her, or what? She asked herself, therefore she hesitated for a while, but afterwards, she realized she has nothing to be afraid of. Olivia nodded and agreed to him. “All right, follow me”, Heath said to her with a smile on his face. He held her right hand and dragged her with gentleness towards the kitchen. “Surprise!”, Heath uttered in delight. When Olivia saw the chocolate shiny glaze on waffles, and the slices of reddish strawberries on the top of it, causes her stomach to growl. An impulse of craving and desire to have a bite on the waffles, makes Olivia sit down at the table and pick up the utensils right away, even though Heath still stands behind her, giggling. Olivia noticed him and dropped the fork and knife in her hand. She clears her throat and said, “Don’t stand there, come and join me”. Heath followed and sits down next to her. “Really, you forgot already about me, because of food”, he chuckles. Olivia didn’t find his joke funny. It didn’t send a single tickle on her body to laugh, after the memories of last night cross into her mind, thus instead she sneers to him. “Do you think I forgave you”, she said. “Why do you think I prepared this?”, Heath places his hands on the top of hers. “I know I am wrong, it should be our date night, I promise next time, I’ll reschedule at weekends”. “Don’t work overtime”, she gazes at him, “I don’t get what you are doing back in your office, is it more confidential than my job, that’s why you weren’t telling me about it”, Olivia mocked him. “No...No, It’s not”, Heath explains himself “Then tell me why?” Olivia asked him “Mr. May creates some changes in the office,” he said “He hasn't even won and yet he thinks he’s the mayor” Olivia uttered “He is the only one now, running for the position, what else do you think? Heath chuckles “It still depends on the people”, Olivia sighs and said, “Nevermind, let’s eat, I am hungry”.
