Charity Event

2206 Words
Even without her boyfriend Heath’s permission, Olivia attended the charity event. She parks her car outside a three-story gleaming building. When Olivia walked inside a lady in a suit approaches her, and asks her name, but Olivia wasn’t sure if her name is on the list because she received an informal invitation. Instead, she mentions Glen Hopkins’ invitation. The lady insisted on knowing her name first since it might be on the list. Olivia gives it to her, and the lady was right. Olivia was even listed at the VIP seat. “Are you sure?”, Olivia asked and the lady looked again at the list. She assures Olivia, which was still puzzled, then all of a sudden Glen appears. “I am glad you manage to make it”, he smiles and steps closer towards her. Olivia replied with a short warm greeting and nothing more. Glen on the other hand talks endlessly of praise about her looks today. “I have never seen you dress like that before”, he gazes at her from her bunned tied hair, brown cocktail attire, and trousers down to her heels. “You are always in a uniform”, he added, but instead, Olivia perceives him, overreacting to win the price he longs for, Olivia’s trust. “Let’s get this over with”, Olivia replied. Glen didn’t say any more words, he leads Olivia towards the elevator and pressed the 3rd-floor button. When he and Olivia are alone in the elevator, the two kept their mouth shut, which result in unpleasant silence. Glen wanted to start a conversation but he found no more words to say because he no longer wanted to try being too nice since he realize it can create suspicion nor, does he despise being a bit tough towards her, or else he would drive Olivia away. Little did he know Olivia wanted for him to speak in the normal way Glen treats a person, no flattery, and no more games. In this way, she can peek at his true personality. However, Olivia notices she too wasn’t being herself. “Was I being a hypocrite myself?”, she whispers in her mind. If Olivia wanted to know more about the person she’s investigating with, she must show trust and comfort towards him, therefore Glen can drop his shield and his true self will come out. “Why did you register my name in the VIP?”, Olivia breaks the silence between them. “I can’t see why not”, he said “It should’ve been the rich friends of yours to be there?”, she asked “Yes, they will be”, Glen glances at her. “I want to remind you, I can’t donate a large sum of money”, “It’s all right, you don’t even need to”, he said, and then the elevator door opens. Glen first walks out and Olivia followed him, the two went to a theater-like door. Before Glen can grip the door handle and open it, Olivia asked him a question “Why do you invite me here in the first place, since you know I can’t donate even hundreds of thousands”. Glen pauses and turns around, facing her, “Your donation can still help”. Olivia laughs, but deep inside her chest anger brews up “Your lying!”, she said. “So, what do you think is the reason?”, he asked. Olivia points out and uttered in conviction, she would never fall into his tricks. She also warns him to never mess anything about the case, and if he does, Olivia wouldn’t hesitate to arrest him. She opens the door and entered inside without even waiting for Glen, yet still, he follows behind her. He then steps faster and catches up, “Do you think I am the person who will put myself in jail”, he said. Olivia pauses from walking, she was all fed with her relationship with Glen, like two tigers on the ground waiting to attack each other, and when they do, both of them will end up wounded, thus she looks at him in the face, “Look...if you want me to be your friend, I am now fine with it, but don’t assume you can get away with the incident, so can we stop about this nonsense because it’s giving me a headache”. “All right, I am sorry”, he said and offers his hand, “Can we start again?”, Olivia takes it and the two shake hands, yet in their minds, they still didn’t drop off their weapons, and shields. The two of them see their compromise, the way of getting closer to know more about each other, and one step ahead towards their agenda. “Thank you”, Glen said with a smile and offers Olivia the path towards their seats upstairs. It is indeed a theater filled with a few intricate patterns and carvings inspired by a classical theater. Although the theater has wide spaces and almost a hundred seats, half of it was used, not including the seats from upstairs. A man in a tuxedo stands in the middle when Olivia and Glen still climb on the stairs. The man greeted the guest, and afterward, he conducted a fifteen-minute talk about the events. “Here”, Glen called Olivia and show him to seat at the front. “Really? There?”, Olivia complained but she has no choice and sits at the very front beside Glen. Olivia then leans closer and asks him, how long will the event be. Glen whispers murmurs, which causes her not to understand a single thing. “What?”, she asked, “I said half an hour”, Glen whispers again yet this time aloud. “Good!”, Olivia nodded, and the two kept themselves quiet but they gave all their ears and attention to the speaker. The speaker discusses questions such as who will benefit from the event, where will the money and the expenses go, and how the amount is needed for the fundraising to be successful. The talk also explored the future plans of the non-profit organization Glen built and the plans to further the cause. “Are you giving out basic necessities for the children?”, Olivia whispers to Glen beside her. “When there is an excess money raised I will also use them to buy school supplies”, Glen replied back. His actions melt Olivia’s heart and his perception of him changes a bit. At first, she thinks it’s his way to show wealth and earn the trust of the people, but if it is the case she must have known it earlier. “That’s so nice of you”, she then pulled out her checkbook and tear the first page, and throws it in her bag. Olivia swings on another pad and doubles the money she initially planned to donate. “What are you doing?”, Glen asked, “Isn’t it obvious?”, Olivia shows him the newly signed checkbook. Glen insisted it wasn’t required for her to do it, but she reasons out, there were no upcoming expenses she must pay, besides the children needed the money more than her. Glen smiles and nodded once, he thanked her not for himself but for helping the children. He explains the sense of joy, light-heartedness, and peace upon knowing he could put happiness on the children’s hearts. Olivia agreed, she expresses the same feeling Glen experience when helping not only the children but also adults and the elderly. “Although I find myself fond of aiding the people in need, children holds a very special place in my heart”, she said. Glen looked at her with his face straight, but deep inside him, he was surprised, since he too feel the same way. “Why?”, he asked her the reason for her feelings towards children. Olivia sighs, she desires to vent out the growing pain inside her heart once the topic has been brought out, yet she hesitates to do it. If she tells it to him, she lets out her true self, which will make her vulnerable. Yet the snippet of her childhood story might earn Glen’s trust. Backing down a little can be an instrument of momentum to move forward. “It’s fine, you don’t need to”, Glen told her “No, it’s ok”, she said. “When I was young, my family don’t have much. Everyday becomes a fight for survival because my father struggles to put a warm meal on our table. My mother was jobless, taking care of me and my younger sister. Due to lack of money, my sister drops out of school. I always dreaded the times, I see her left at home waving at me, before I go to school. From that moment, I promised myself to help children in need, because they don’t deserve what we have been through”, Olivia said. Glen apologized for bringing up the conversation, but she stated it wasn’t his fault. When Glen notices Olivia’s eyes become watery, he diverts the conversation back to the charity event, until the time at the end of the program where he must stand up and talk at the stage. After a few minutes, the event ended with the fundraising. Glen and his organization managed to raise an amount worth ten million dollars. Glen walks towards Olivia waiting for him near the door, “Are you busy today?” Olivia shakes her head and informs him, she is vacant until six in the evening, then she asks why does he have to know it. Glen replied, with an invitation, for them to go into the nearby restaurant since it was now twelve noon, the time to go and eat lunch. Olivia hesitates, but her stomach growls, and if she declined after saying she was free, it might sound rude, therefore Olivia accepted the offer. The two drove towards the location in their own separate cars. When they arrived at the location, Olivia was stunned at the beauty of the restaurant, “It was like a palace”, she gasps a bit. She wanders her eyes around on the beautiful golden engravings of flower scrolls on the walls, and vines on the pillars. A couple of people in formal dress and suits stand next to the shiny wooden railings on the second floor. Waiters and waitresses travel across the floors and serve each table covered on white cloth with a tiny vase in the middle. A plate, knife, glass, spoon, and fork beside a fan-shaped napkin. Even though her eyes sparkle at how beautiful the restaurant is, Olivia refuses to dine in there, “I don’t think the food here will be worth it”, she said. “I am going to pay for everything, grab whatever you want, besides won’t you at least try it”, “Fine, I am not the one losing money”, she smirks at him and approached a female server, “A table for two please”, Olivia told the server. The server uttered a warm greeting and a wide smile on her face then asks the two of them to follow her. She leads them to one of the tables right next the window. “What can I get started for you two?”, the server said “Uhh, can you give us a sec”, Olivia told her “Alright, just call me when you guys are ready”, the server told them before she leaves. “Is there something wrong?”, Glen asked her, the moment when her face frowns after Olivia opens the menu. “The price here is insane!”, she whispered aloud, and slammed the menu on the table. “A single food here will cost me a quarter of my salary!. “Didn’t I just say I am the one paying, so don’t make a fuss about it”, Glen said. Olivia laughs at him, she couldn’t figure out in what world do they need to eat in such an expensive place, so she refused and stands up. “Where are you going?” Glen asked her, “Anywhere but here”, Olivia walks away and left the restaurant after. Glen faced different challenges in his life, he could handle all of them but Olivia. He sighs in frustration, yet later on he still follows her outside. “Hey! Ms. Clark!”, he manages to catch up Olivia, which was about to get inside her car. “Are you leaving me behind?”, he asked. Olivia looks at him and raises one of her eyebrows “Do you want to come with me?”, “Well, do you have any plans in mind?”, Glen scratches the back of his head. “Yeah come on!”, she said in excitement.
