Whether or Not

The sun shines brighter than any part of the day when Olivia drives back to the police station. Although the sunlight gives a vibrant glow to every object it touches, it causes the citizens of the city, to still drown under scorching heat. The longer Olivia is stuck in the traffic, she becomes more submerged under the heat, which makes her turn the air conditioning in her car higher, yet nothing seems to work. Little dots of sweat form on her forehead, and the thick coating of her uniform makes the skin beneath it, baked due to hotness of the surrounding air. Olivia opens the windows in her car, however, there’s no air coming from outside but the stinging heat of the sunlight, therefore a wish for a little breeze comes in vain after a minute. Olivia drives towards an entire hour, sweat rolls all over her body. When she arrives at her destination, her friend Emmy stands at the information desk right in front of the glass door of the station. She and the policeman assigned at the desk chatters and laugh together. The smile across the face of her friend Emmy can be seen clearly even at a distance, she must be having a good time. However, their conversation pauses the moment Emmy notices Olivia approaching on their way. “I’ll talk to you later”, Emmy reminds the policeman before she turns towards Olivia. The two walked through the corridors towards the cafeteria. Olivia pulled a grinning look on her face and teases Emmy with sweet words, mimicking the voice of the policeman, but Emmy didn’t buy her jokes, instead, she requested for her to stop. Olivia agreed and stops, or she might cause a foolish argument between them. However, she asked, “How was it that you two are so close?”. “Are you jealous?”, Emmy chuckles. “Of what?”, Olivia giggles. “Our friendship”, Emmy uttered in a playful voice, but it makes Olivia laugh harder. She pauses from walking and stares at her friend’s eyes. “Is it really just a friend?”, she asked. Emmy sighs and nods yet walked away with a smile afterwards, and didn’t even wait for her friend. Olivia catches up running a bit, and gasps along their way, “Your lying!”, she said. Emmy has no reaction but still the same smile, thus Olivia pushes her a little further to confess. “We promised each other to always tell the truth”, Emmy then steps closer to her friend “Fine, I’ll tell you but keep it a secret”, she whispered. Olivia leaned closer and listened with all her ears, but she didn’t anticipate what her friend was about to say. “We have been dating for a year”, Emmy told in silence. Olivia’s face went blank, she stares at her friend’s Emmy, without a word. She can’t find a word to say should she be happy or mad at her friend for saying it late, doesn’t it sound demanding of her. Olivia’s mind spirals in confusion within a few seconds, she wasn’t even sure if her friend tells the truth. Olivia can say nothing but a short “What?”. “I said we have been dating for a year”, Emmy repeats her word, but Olivia is still unable to find the right reaction. “For a year, but why didn’t you tell me?”, she asked in a soft voice. Emmy explains the decision to keep it a secret is a mutual settlement between her and her boyfriend, therefore they told no one but their parents. “So if I didn’t tease you again and again, you don’t have a plan telling it to me?”, Olivia said, “No, silly! Of course, I’ll tell you, we just don’t want to be exclusive yet, so please keep it a secret”, Emmy pleaded. Although frustrated by her friend’s action Olivia remained calm. She avoided making a scene out about little things. In her mind, venting anger can only result in misunderstanding besides it is Emmy’s life and decision. As a friend, her role is to support her no matter how the world and her life turn out, besides the relationship has nothing to do with her own life. Olivia sighed her emotions out and smiled at her friend, “All right, but don’t repeat it again”, she then hold Emmy’s right hand “Be careful, and inform me if he hurts you”. Emmy laughs at her, she then assures Olivia how great a man is her boyfriend. “Why don’t we do a double date?”, Emmy suggests she and their boyfriends have dinner sometime soon. “I don’t know”, Olivia shrugs her shoulder, “Is there something wrong?”, “Nothing, it's just, I have to focus on the case, but I like the idea”, Olivia told her. The two of them proceed walking in the corridors of the police station when out of nowhere, a voice of a man calls Olivia from the back. A young policeman came running towards their way, “Ma’am, there’s someone who wanted to meet you”, he uttered after catching his breath. “Who is it?”, Olivia asked, “He didn’t tell me his name, but the man told me he has an urgent message for you”. “Where is he now?”, “At the information desk, we didn’t let him in”, the policeman said, and at once Olivia dashes to the said place. Emmy followed her friend yet when she sets an eye on the person, she walked away and didn’t interfere, knowing Olivia can handle the situation. “You?”, Olivia frowns in confusion, “What are you doing here?”, “To see you”, Glen smiles at her. He then steps closer and closer towards her, with his right hand at his back. His actions didn’t please Olivia at all instead, she scolded him a bit for calling him whenever he like. “I have an important job, and a tight schedule, yet now I am here”, she sighs, “What do you want this time? Is it really urgent?”, Olivia uttered in frustration. “Well, no, but if I told you it wasn’t would you come here?”, Glen asked her, but Olivia replies through a glare. He clears his throat and said, “Fine, I am sorry I wasted your time again, look I am here to apologize and give you this…”, Glen pulls out a bouquet of red roses from his back and hands it to Olivia. “I am sorry for how I acted last time, don’t worry forget about my request, you don’t..”, “I will go”, all of a sudden Olivia’s voice changes. Her reply results in puzzlement in Glen’s mind, therefore he asks her why, and Olivia reasons and points out she’s not going to do it for him, but for the kids in the charity event. Glen smiles and his face lights up when she let go of her words. “For sure?”, he asked, and Olivia nodded. “I don’t know what to say, but thank you….Ms. Clark”, he said. The two gazed at each other’s eyes for a few seconds in silence, yet when they begin to notice it, the situation turned awkward. “Thank you for this” Olivia breaks the uneasy tension between them, and diverts her eyes to the flowers. “I’ll no longer bother you, have a great day”, Glen said before he walks away. Olivia on the other hand goes straight into her office and locks its doors. She sits down and gazes at the thornless flowers in her hand. Each rose glows in red, with a scent of fresh sweetness. Too bad she can’t memorize the beauty of the roses for long, because when her boyfriend Heath sees her carrying them, he would throw into outrage, which results in a relentless argument. The flowers were so beautiful it left a crack in her defense against Glen Hopkins since his gift made her heart melt. Olivia can no longer remember the last time Heath gave her a flower, perhaps weeks ago, months or might even a year. A tear wanted to flow out from her eyes, but Olivia wiped her eyes. She is in her office not at home, in this place, there’s no room for her personal problems. Olivia then brought herself back to reality. The flowers and the way Mr. Hopkins is part of his facade, she can play along but Olivia mustn’t take it to heart. She stands up, picked up the flower. Olivia gazes at it once more, before throwing it into the trash can in her office, and seals it off. She sits back in her chair and proceeds to her work. After an hour, Olivia conducted an urgent meeting. She invited five of the criminal investigators and assigned tasks with them on a secret. Olivia orders them to investigate the said reason for the death of the politicians Martin mentioned to her. The connection of Halbert to them, and their history in the city. The investigators agreed and the group conducted careful planning on the distribution of the task and the execution. She also strictly reminds, all of the information must be given to her alone, then Olivia dismissed the meeting. Time passes and the hot sun rays turned into a cold dark night sky. Olivia packs her stuff and went to her car. She drives towards a restaurant a couple of kilometers away, and she arrives in no time since the road flows smoothly. Olivia parks her car outside, and picked up her phone from her bag, she looks for any messages from her boyfriend on her screen, but there was none. She walked into a simple restaurant with no design but the paintings and tiny light bulbs in every cushion chair. Inside five groups of people ranging from two to four dines in the place and at the middle table for two is where Heath sits. He raises his hand in order for him to be noticed, yet it isn’t necessary since a lot of chairs are vacant and the diners are set wide apart from each other, making him quick to find. Olivia approaches her boyfriend and sits in front of him. The two give each other a quick kiss on the lips, and then they proceed on a little talk through asking their significant other about their day. “Everything is fine, actually nothing new”, Heath told her while he scans the menu, “What about the new mayor?”, she asked “Still the same”, Heath scoffed, “but I think he is a bit more generous and easy to please than Sir. Sotto”, “How do you say so?”, Olivia asked without looking at him, but instead on the menu book. “He’s not strict and he even plans on giving us a little bonus”, Heath’s voice fills with enthusiasm. Olivia points out, showing kindness is not always a good thing, it can also be used to trick people. Heath laughs at her and said, “You are too serious, maybe you are hungry”. “I am saying this for you”, she told her, yet Heath ignores her, and calls a waiter instead. The waiter approached them at once, and the couple gives their order. Two roasted steaks and a bottle of wine. When the orders are handed out, Heath begins talking about his plans for the two of them tomorrow. Since Olivia’s shift is over in the afternoon, he suggested they go to the movies, which makes Olivia curious with regards to her boyfriend’s schedule. “Don’t you have work tomorrow?”, she asked “Yeah, but I told my boss, I will be absent and he’s fine with it”, he said in delight. “What! Are you insane? What about your salary, won’t they deduct from it?”, “No, my boss and I agreed, I worked overtime on some other days to pay”, “Absolutely not!”, Olivia’s voice heightens a little, therefore the people around glance at them, “We could do movies on the weekends, besides I have a charity event to attend tomorrow”, she added. “Since when did you start attending charity events?”, he asked Olivia explains, the event is part of her job and Heath has nothing to do with it, so she didn’t say any more information, but Heath gets infuriated by the idea even though he’s not showing it through his actions. “I’ll come with you”, Heath told her “Oh my gosh! Not this again, why can’t you trust me!”, Olivia whispered aloud. “Why are you ashamed of me?”, he replied, and this draw the line between their conversation, “I am done, you are unbelievable”, Olivia stands up, picked up her bag, and dashes outside.
