The day around one of the huge streets near the city center begins, when a woman, with a basket of handfuls of bread, wanders around. She yells, to her buyers from their houses. Olivia stands before the gate of the entire apartment. She switches and closes the gate when Olivia heard the echoes of the voice of the female seller passing her house, therefore she dashes to approach the vendor. Olivia first greeted the woman, and the seller did the same, then she handed Olivia a bag with five pieces of bread inside already reserved for her, in exchange for a little amount of dime.
“Thank you for consistently buying my products”, the seller said with a smile
“Oh, don’t worry about it, I am glad to help, besides your bread is so tasty!”, Olivia uttered.
The seller thanked her once more, and they departed their ways. Olivia went inside her car and drives to the streets of the city.
The usually crowded street filled with smog can be now driven free and spacious. Half the standard number of cars, wiped away because it a regular holiday is celebrated commemorating the foundation of the city, but Olivia ignored it. Justice can’t be postponed, and the suspect still roams unchained around the unsuspected people. In half an hour Olivia arrives at her workplace, in the police station.
Many of her colleagues still stayed at the police station, she greeted them, then Olivia goes right away in her office room and picked up a long envelope, and went out. She then visited her boss’ room, Lieutenant George Jarvis. Olivia knocked and knocked but there’s no answer. Olivia found it a little odd, since George always works, even on holidays or weekends, he is well-known at the station for being hardworking, loyal and smart, George became the model to the policemen and women in the city, how he can he be absent? therefore Olivia concludes, he’s probably busy or in an emergency situation.
Olivia went back to her car, and drives again along the long road towards her, and onto another target location, she exhausts her wrist from the steering wheel. However, the empty windy road gives her soothe and a bit of relief in her chest. “I should often go out, during holidays”, she said to herself and chuckles. The view and the bright sunny day became the sign for Olivia to cheer up, therefore she followed her instincts, and plays loud vibrant music in her car, and sang along, without worries about who might hear her.
Her rejuvenation didn’t last long when she arrives at one of the biggest villas she ever set her eyes on, in her entire life. Olivia noticed guards stationed by the gates, therefore, she parked her car a few inches away outside, then she walk towards the guards. Before Olivia utters a single word, she shows them her ID, and told the guards, her purpose, to interrogate the newly elected Mayor and the owner of the house, Martin May, but her hopes fell in despair. The guards told her, Mayor May was not present in his house at the meantime. Olivia then asked why. Both of the guards looked at each other for a few seconds, and replied, “I’m sorry, ma’am we have no idea”.
“Did he inform you, when he’ll come back?”, Olivia said, but the guards shook their heads, and said the same thing.
“All right, let me know when he’s here”, she instructed the guards and goes back to her car.
Olivia didn’t want her day to be wasted, without doing a move further towards the answers
on the case, thus she drives towards the location of the murder incident.
After she reaches the place, its doors are opened, but inside, lights from the sun’s rays slip into the windows, and clash into its floor providing the only light in the place. Olivia steps in, and a man in a janitor uniform, swipes the area. Out of curiosity, the janitor asked her purpose there, and who she is. Olivia explains she’s there to observe the place and maybe have a short conversation with him, then she shows her ID, and made herself known to the man. The janitor agrees and opens some of the lights in the place, giving clarity to unknown objects covered in shadows in the hall.
The janitor offered Olivia to sit down, and if she likes a drink. Olivia complied but refused the drinks. There at one of the round tables, the janitor joined her and their conversation begins.
“Are you in here, March 23 this year?”, she asked,
“Oh, is it the campaign of the former mayor?”, the janitor told her, and Olivia nodded,
“Did you see any unusual actions and people?”, she takes out a notebook from her sling bag. The janitor pauses for a second, but then he shakes his head, “As far as I can remember, there were none, aside from the murder”, he said
“What about the staff? Did you notice something different?”,
The Janitor pauses, yet again after another second, he responds, “I am not sure, but I think there were none”.
“What about any object, did anyone of you retrieve or notice anything?”, she uttered, but the Janitor shakes his head.
“All right”, Olivia nods, “Where were you at the time of the incident?”, she added.
“I was outside the kitchen”, he said. Olivia looks into his eyes, and his lips before she says a word, “What are you doing there?”,
“Mop, one of the servers was clumsy and spilled a sauce all over the ground”, he said, then Olivia starts to note down. “Is this during, before, or after?”, she asked, and the janitor told her the event happened before the incident. “What about after?”, Olivia said,
“I was thrown into shock, all of a sudden a loud bang hurts my ears”, he said, and Olivia writes down on her notes. “Continue….”, she said to him, but the janitor didn’t respond and fell silent, therefore Olivia repeats her word, and instead the janitor stares at her. Olivia sighs and throws another question once more, she asks him to describe the best he could, on his night at the event. “Would you mind following me, I have to show you something”, he replied.
Olivia became puzzled on his offer, yet still followed him. She got the years of training and a pistol hidden inside her jacket. Without a doubt, she believes she can take down the skinny thin janitor.
They walked to the halls and the janitor led her to the bathroom, where the incident happen, the yellow strip label, do not cross, still hangs, between the way. The janitor stops and turns around, he then looked into Olivia’s eyes and cleared his throat.
“It was ten minutes before 9 in the evening. The sound of guests’ utensils and glasses clanking can be heard across the room, but little did they know, the people who served their dishes, struggle to meet the number of meals they must place on their tables. The server dash inside the kitchen to deliver the next dish. The chefs prepare two meals at the same time, chopping on the right then mixing at the cooking pot on the left. The whole kitchen is filled with savory smokes from dishes, but it increases the temperature, which results in the kitchen staff sweating across their faces. I went into the kitchen because one of the servers told me the trash gushes out from its container, therefore it must be thrown at once. However, when I came there, I see no full trash can, I was puzzled. Did the other janitor take it? I asked myself. I didn’t notice I am a few inches away right in front of the door, thus when my senses came back, I turned around and was about to leave when all of a sudden my chest bumps into the tray at the hands of a server. The hot soup pours into my shirt, and it brings stings of burning pain to my skin. “Watch your back!”, the server shouted and glares at me. I lost my words, and couldn’t pull off a reaction, since I can’t figure out what to feel, because my mind didn’t process the events right away, but then I apologized. One of the chefs approached us, he said we have nothing to worry about, it’s just a soup, and they can make another one. I thanked the chef and pleaded sorry once more to the server, yet when I walked away, his eyes flares at me, as if I hurt him. I am the one at pain, I should be angry too. My anger builds up on my chest, but I didn’t let it carry me, because if I do, I might attack the man.
I went next to the staff room and picked my bag. Fortunately, I have an extra uniform, in case the one I wear soaks in sweat. I changed, then walked towards the bathroom. However, in the middle of my way, right in the intersection to the corridor I paused, when I heard two men, whisper aloud, they must think no one is in there, since the coast is clear. In an accident, my ears caught the words of their conversation. “It’s time, what are you waiting for?”, one of them uttered, “We haven’t received the signal yet”, the other one replied. My mind becomes confused, I can understand their words, but I don’t get what they are saying, it becomes a riddle to me, so I peeked a little behind the wall. Guards? I questioned myself. Shouldn’t they be at their posts, what are they are doing in here? I wondered, therefore, I focused my eyes on them, at first I couldn’t see their faces, because the one stands sideways and the other, faces his back in my direction.
I tried to listen again, instead, but this time I couldn’t hear anything. They might have seen me, I told myself, then my heart starts to beat fast, and my breath hardens. My head encircles with one question, did they know I was there? I couldn’t hold my curiosity, therefore I peeked once again, to see, what’s going on with them, and when I turned around, they are walking towards me, I panicked, and in an unconscious decision, I let my feet run.
I stand near the podium, my mind processes, the series of events snapping in front of me, then I asked myself again, What was I scared for? I didn’t even know what the guards are talking about, I then chuckled, but felt coward. Is it because they are well built, and tall, probably, I told myself. Afterwards, I headed to the janitor’s closet and picked up a mop, and out of nowhere, the guards still stands near the bathroom. I didn’t go close to them, because my knees tremble, therefore I ignored them. Minutes passed, after I mopped a spill of wine, a loud deafening bang, echoes all over the place. I headed and checked, then all of the guards now are outside the bathroom door for men, they conducted a meeting for a thorough search, and I noticed the two guards earlier were not in there, but the ten guards assigned for the event was all in there”, the
janitor said,
Olivia then intervenes asking if he was sure there were only ten guards, the janitor nodded, he explained they have a meeting with all the staff before, he was sure.
“Do you remember the faces of all the guards?”, Olivia told him,
“How would I memorize their faces? I don’t care who they are, I was there for my job, nothing else”,
Olivia stays silent and writes in his notebook. She then asks the janitor, if he still remembers the guard’s face and the janitor nods. Olivia then invited him to go to the precinct with her, so the police can sketch the guard’s face, and they can track them down. The janitor agreed but made her wait for an hour. Olivia’ wasn’t bothered, since her schedule has a lot of vacancies.
Time passes, the janitor went into Olivia’s car with her. Olivia was about to start the car when a man in a black jacket stands a few meters away from them, reflecting on her side mirror. Olivia turned around, but all of a sudden the man, can’t be seen, in the place. She ignored it and drives away.
