Early next morning, Olivia headed to her workplace at the police station, right away after she receives an urgent phone call from one of the detectives from her team members. She strode on the corridors and creates a tapping sound from the low heels of her black shoes because of her massive footsteps. Policemen and women bypass opposite her way, and all of them uttered a short greeting, Olivia uttered a good morning to every one of them without looking at their faces. Her mind runs thrill in circles with the message she received, the investigators finally hold the answers about the validity of Martin’s statement has arrived after two weeks.
The message sent to her was not all good news. The detective who tested her warns Olivia an impending doom might come and he will tell it to her once she arrives at the conference room. The room has no single person inside, locked and filled with darkness, therefore the detective suggested to her if they can use it in the morning since no one plans of even opening it, for now. Olivia agreed and told him, the two of them should meet at the said place right away. If possible she instructed him to open and prepare the room, therefore no time flies down in waste.
She is a few steps away from the conference room, and light peeks at the little openings of window blinds. Olivia knocks at the door once she reaches it, in a second it opens. “Good morning, inspector Clark”, the man in the same uniform, greets her with a smile, and Olivia does the same on him. Alexis Day, one of the 2nd lieutenant and an inspector, who ranks the same as Olivia joins the investigation of the case. The Sotto’s and the citizens of the city longed for answers towards the death of their beloved former mayor, and this means, the investigators should act quickly at once. The highest-ranking officers employed a new investigator to join Olivia and the now promoted senior inspector and police captain George Jarvis.
She first heard the news, last Friday at the time Olivia enjoys herself from the charity event of Glen’s founded organization. The time she went back to the police station on Monday nothing changes. Although the office is a size of a tiny bedroom, George still resides in the same place. The two met at his office, and Olivia brought up his promotion through a congratulation right at the very moment she entered. George thanked her but shifts their conversation to the latest details he gathered.
Olivia told all of the new details and proceedings on the investigation to inspector Day, when they sat down alone in the conference room. She placed pictures from an envelope and scatters them aligned on the table. One of the pictures contains a captured image of a single right-hand black cotton glove. A thirty-five-year-old security guard stationed at the night on the incident found the item after the murderer drops after he runs when the security guard managed to crack open the locked door.
“So how did the criminal escape?” Alexis asked
“He released a gas, filling the whole bathroom, the security guards backed away, out of fear from the effects of the gas, then they suspected the criminal breaks free from the huge vent at the ceiling”.
“Won’t it take time? Perhaps there’s an accomplice”, he said
Olivia agreed, it is hard to imagine how he pulled the murder if he is alone, or else the suspect is an expert criminal. If it is the case, he must be imprisoned sooner, he is a monster on
the loose. One thing is for sure, he didn’t plan this alone, the precision, timing, even the camera angles was not caught.
“The guard was willing to testify at the court”, she said.
“Good!”, Alexis uttered and leans his back on the chair, “The staff from the event, holds an important key to the investigation, they are the ones who saw the murder”.
Olivia hopes all of them, have the guts to testify because their fear of putting themselves into the gallows holds their guts back, even the guard hesitated for a long time. His decision turned upside down when the whispers in his mind, of holding the information he knows makes him an accomplice, and the guilt of his heart on the poor former mayor and his family not receiving any answers until now because of him, haunted the guard day and night, therefore he surrendered.
“Will Capt. Jarvis agree with me if I conduct questioning to the staffs?”, he asked
“I don’t think so, he’s the one handling them, but still you can ask?”, Olivia said,
“So, what are we gonna do wait here and do nothing?”, Alexis’ voice starts to rise “Since I join the investigation, he assigned me on one task! Only one!”, he uttered n conviction.
Olivia tries to ease the tension, she shares her own experience with their boss George, she told him she too has limited access to the information gathered, “I sometimes think our role here is to help him find clues. Perhaps he’ll evaluate the case alone”, she said
“And you are ok with that?”, Alexis asked
“Not really”, Olivia shrugged her shoulders a bit, “Why do you think I assigned other detectives on the task about the deaths of the Gomez brothers and councilor Benson?”, she said, and when Olivia mentions the investigation, Alexis sits up straight, and his face went serious.
“About that…..he already knows about it”, he said.
“What? But how?”, she asked
“I am sorry, I have no idea, but probably one of the detectives slacked or Capt. Jarvis noticed it, do you want me to investigate?”,
Olivia declined, since it will only waste Alexis’ time, instead he must put his efforts into the case. George has to know about the information anyway. She then told him to proceed with their findings of the former politicians’ deaths.
“Mayor May might be right”, he said.
Alexis pulls out papers containing medical records and the case of Gomez’s deaths. Olivia picked up the third paper, which has a written statement.
“Three years ago on the 3rd of March, a group of men ambushed, a black Porsche SUV in the middle of the street during nightfall, killing congressmen Ranveer and Franklin Gomez in an instant. After a year of investigation, the ringleader finally got caught when the Gomez family placed a heft amount of bounty on their heads. Forty-two-year-old Ace Rogers, who is a former worker in the Gomez family’s factory business. He pointed out his reason because of revenge for the owner’s mistreatment, Ace made up his mind to kill the brothers after Franklin fired him from his job. His other accomplice still wasn’t caught, “, Alexis said.
Olivia then took the medical records and read the name written above the paper, “Ernest Benson?”, she asked.
“Councilor Benson dropped dead in his birthday party a year ago. The witness told in this
statement of his wife…”, Alexis placed another paper on the desk, “Ten minutes had passed since the guest left, Ernest bid them goodbye, and came back inside the house. His wife is in the kitchen at the time when Ernest lies on the ground unconscious. She brought him to the hospital, and like the Gomez brothers, he was dead on arrival. The doctors said it was a heart attack, but he has no medical records before showing signs of any disease, sickness, or even symptoms since he was still young. The family didn’t raise concerns anymore”, Alexis then picks up the files on the tables and stacks them on the side. “What concerns me the most is all the people murdered were former allies of Mayor Sotto at his political party. They changed sides and even accused the mayor of corruption publicly, most likely the reason behind their death is power struggle”, he added.
Olivia fell silent, she doesn’t understand what emotions rages in her chest. A wave of bursting anger, mixed with dismay. People waste their lives over power, position, and control, which they can’t and will never possess permanently, then, in the end, will desire more, to the point that their ambitions cant satisfy themselves, not knowing the cost. Her mind is unable to figure out, why politicians have to do this since no reason is acceptable for killing others in the name of ideas or even objects.
Alexis clears his throat when Olivia went quiet for a few seconds. She apologized and thanked Alexis and the team for their efforts. The two chatted a few reminders “Let me know if you need a company”, Alexis told her before they departed ways and closed the conference room.
The moment Olivia went outside the room a policeman approached her way and told Olivia his boss Capt. Jarvis waits for her in his office. It might be about the investigation, Olivia wished Jarvis won’t exclude her from the case but from his temperance, it is more likely to happen.
She walked on the corridors mindless from the present events around her. The ringing telephones, chatters, and even Emmy from afar wave at her from the information desk but Olivia bypasses and her friend went unnoticed.
Olivia stands behind her boss’ door and was about to knock but her fist pulls her from doing it, perhaps she was nervous or worried about what might come, yet Olivia proceeds on knocking. Thinking about the future events she almost has no control of will not help her since facing her boss is an inevitable event.
“Come in!”, George shouted. Olivia opened the door and entered inside his office.
“Do you know, why I called you?”, he compiles a pile of paper on his desk and afterward looked at Olivia in the eyes.
Olivia nodded and explained her reason. “I apologized for my actions sir, but again I hope you know, being a great contribution to solving the case is a great honor for me, that’s why I chose this profession in the first place”, she said in conviction. Her words made George smile although it was half a lie George somehow believed in it.
“I remember, myself in you”, he went on his drawers to get a bottle of wine and two glasses. He poured a few ounces on each glass then handed one to her.
“The case we are solving now is not a simple crime like feuds between friends and family, it is also not as simple as robbery, so the more you know about the investigation, the more your life will be in danger, do you understand that?” George said.
Olivia agreed and takes a sip of the wine, “Thank you for your concern sir but we are all law enforcers, our enemies can steal our lives anytime if they wanted”.
“I hope you don’t regret this decision”, George drops his glass on the table. He pulled out a folder from his top desk drawer and gave it to Olivia.
She opened the file and papers about the two mysterious security guards the janitor witnessed, on the night of the incident. Olivia looked at her boss bewildered and full of questions on her head, on how did he manage to know this information. Did he investigate and question the janitor before her even knowing it? She wanted to say a word, but she can’t choose what question she must ask.
“The two fake security guards, are criminals from the wanted list. Fifty-year-old David Barker forty-eight-year-old William West, both convicted of robbery. William was last seen a week ago from an elementary school St. Edgar Lane(one of the streets in the city), when we investigated, William’s daughter studied there, but after the day the footage was taken, she stops attending school. David Barker on the other hand was last seen at one of the convenience stores in Pride point drive”,
“Outside the city?”, Olivia asked.
George nodded, “I am giving you a task now to follow and investigate David Barker, could you do it?”,
“Of course, sir it would be an honor”, Olivia said in a serious tone
“Great! Focus yourself on him for now, I will give William to inspector Alexis”.
