Ten o clock in the evening, at the same bar. Glen stands up, from his seat at the counter. The effects of the alcohol, are more evident the moment he gets on his feet. Aside from his low inhibitions and blurred sight, his legs wobble, which caused him to almost trip in the middle of the place. Glen grasps on every chair along his way. He walks outside and goes towards the parking to get into his car, but he can sense, any minute from now he will pass out after his head and his eyes become heavy. Glen grabs his phone from his pocket and tries to call a number on his contacts, however, the names and numbers shake when he tries to press it. Glen intended to call his brother, but he struggles to see if it was the right contact, therefore he pressed any number he can and calls it.
At the police station, Olivia is still present in her office. Half the number of policemen are present in the station, yet her door was locked, and papers were scattered on her desk. She then stares at a sketch of a man in her hands, which was made after the description of the janitor. The last days she pre-occupies herself from investigating these people, and with luck and endless hours of search and interrogation, she managed to know their identity, and now she has to know where they reside. Question builds up in her mind, but one of them sticks for days. How did, Lieutenant George miss this important information? Is he slacking on his job, did he intend to leave it, or did he keep it from her? What if he finds me, incompetent, therefore he hides it from me? Olivia asks herself, and all of a sudden, her phone buzzes. Without a hint or clue, Olivia is surprised by the name, which shows up on her screen, Glen Hopkins. Out of her curiosity, she answers the call.
“Hello, Mr. Hopkins?”, she asks
“Who is this?’, Glen replied in a slurred voice,
Olivia then got puzzled, about the man in the call, if he is alright, “Mr. Hopkins, is this you?”,
“What do you mean, me? Of course….I am me, who are you?”, Glen uttered.
“Sir, why did you call me? Are you alright?”, she asks. Afterward, the sound of upbeat music and the roar of a group of people passes through the phone.
“I guess….can you get me a ride or, call my brother?”,
“Okay, tell me your location first?”, Olivia told him,
Glen looks at his back at the top signage, but when he twisted his body, his shaky, soft legs cause him to almost fell down once more. “Oaahhh!”, he uttered, “What just happened?”,
“What do you mean, what happened? Sir are you drunk?”, Olivia said
“I had a thing or two...I don’t know, who is this by the way?”
Olivia then introduces himself and asks him if he could describe his location or the name of the place and street he’s been to, but Glen gave half of the name of the bar since his sight was dented, and the call ends.
At the bar, Glen’s phone drops hard on the ground, which results in a crack on its screen. “Oh crap!”, he walks step by step to pick it up, his eyes looking on the floor alone, in order for him not to tumble on the ground. All of a sudden, a man of his size bumps on him. Glen and he didn’t see nor have an idea about how they bumped into each other, since the man walks sideways, without control over his feet. Not because he is disabled, but his inhibitions were also low. Glen
and the man looked at each other for a few seconds but no one apologize.
The man’s eyes start to glare along with its feet stepping closer and closer. Glen tries to stand straight, even though his throbbing head kills him. In the next seconds, he reads every flinch in the man’s arms, hands, and movements. However, the man has another man who stands on his side therefore Glen locks his eyes on both of them.
When they got close face to face, the man moves his chin up and said, “Do we have a problem here?”, Glen rolls his eyes from the man’s head to toe, “Nothing, do you?”, he said. When the man in front of Glen starts to clench his fist, the other man, he’s with interrupts between them. “It’s getting late, let’s go”, he drags the arm of his friend, but the man still stares at Glen. His jaws tighten and his veins pop out from his skin.
Glen sneers at him, “Coward!”. His insult fuels the boiling hot temper inside the man, therefore it dashes towards him and punches him in the jaw. Glen falls sideways into the ground. The other man then drags his friend and alleviates the tension. He whispers a few inaudible words on his friend, but the man brushes his hand off and rushes towards Glen. However, Glen gets back on his feet, and strikes back, knocking out the man. The friend of the man still intermediates yet through convincing words alone, since he doesn’t want himself to be involved in the fight, and get his feeble thin body to be hurt.
Glen picks up the drunk man from the neck and punches him once more. When the man’s lips start to bleed he hesitates to strike again, and the man uses this moment and hits him in his stomach. The guard then notices the two of them after a crowd forms around.
“What is going on in here?”, they asked and looked at the drunk man who lies under Glen, after he was about to give him another strike of his fist.
The guards grabbed the two, who struggle their bodies against their grip. At first, the guards intended to put them in the stock room and lock them out until they call the police, yet out of nowhere, Olivia and a policeman arrives. The two police officers approach the guards but didn’t utter a single word. Olivia already notices the events which took place earlier, through the wounds across their faces. Both of the police officers looked at each other, and pulled a handcuff, then placed it on Glen and the drunk man. This time the two of them complied, to get inside the police cruiser.
Olivia and the other police officer brought Glen and the drunk man, into the police station. It is already past 11. The drunk man passes out, on the way towards the station. Glen, however, is still half-awake.
Olivia placed them in the cell, and let the interrogation be conducted tomorrow when their senses come back. “All right Mr. Hopkins, I didn’t expect this to happen, but I have no choice”, Olivia, turned the keys and locks out the cell’s door.
“You can’t do this to me!”, Glen shouted in a slurred voice,
“Well, I just did”, Olivia told him, then tosses the keys up in the air, which lands on her hands right away.
“Let me out of here”, Glen grips his hands and shakes the rails of the cell, which creates a loud metal noise all across the temporary jail.
“Hey stop it!”, Olivia scolded him,
“Listen…..I can pay you any amount, so get me out of here!”, Glen repeated.
His complaints, tremors Olivia’s nerves, she wants to punch him in the face to seal his mouth, yet she won’t allow to degrade herself in a barbaric state, therefore she leaves him, without minding if he also passes out. However, she becomes puzzled about the events which happened to Glen. An arrogant, narcissist like him will put himself in a situation, which can ruin his reputation and even his life. There must be a reason behind this. All of a sudden Olivia’s heart melts for him, but she didn’t let it show up in her action. Before she drives home, Olivia left a few words on her co-workers to look after Glen.
Inside his cell, the pain in Glen’s head pounds more and more, and everything in his sight starts to rotate. A massive substance from his guts urges, to rise up on her throat, but Glen avoids puking in his cell because two other men also share the same cell with him. He bangs the rails and called the attention of one of the policemen. “Hello...sir, can you help me? I think am gonna throw up”, he then covers his mouth, when he retches.
In no time, the policeman handed him a bucket. At first, he pleaded to go in the bathroom, since, puking in the presence of others, embarrasses him. Still, the policeman declined thus, Glen have no choice and vomited in the bucket. When he raises his head from the bucket Glen noticed on the opposite cell, the drunk man, he fought earlier tries to stand up but collapses in a matter of seconds.
“Hey, I think, the man needs some help”, he said to the policeman. The policeman glances, to the cell of the drunk man, “A lot of people like him, use to be here before”, he sneers, “He’s gonna be alright”. The policeman told Glen to call him if he needed anything before he took the bucket and walked away.
Hours pass, the night shifts, and dawn begin. Glen leans his back and heads to the wall and falls asleep in his cell, with the other two inmates. The chatters coming from the policemen at the station subside. All the prisoners from the other cells, also fell quiet, after all the days locked into the jail, waiting for their transfer and trials at the court. The scratchy, hard beds with a toilet by their side. The cold air slips into their small high window in the cell. These prisoners can still have a deep sleep. It is hard to imagine how they can endure such a thing, find themselves safe or perhaps not. Maybe they are used to this situation, or the prisoners don’t care at all, besides if a person resides in prison would it be the first thing running into your mind. Adrian’s eyes manage to capture this moment after he walks behind the policeman who leads him towards the cell of his brother.
The policeman inserts a key, unlocking Glen’s cell. “Glen Hopkins!”, he shouted. Glen opens his eyes in an instant, the call startles his whole body, “You don’t need to shout!”, he rubs his half-opened eyes and yawns.
“You’re free to go”, the policeman said
Glen stays silent for a few seconds, clueless about his surroundings, but when he shakes his head and turned his eyes around a little, his brother stands next to the policeman.
“Adrian?” he asked.
Adrian approaches his brother in his cell, “I am taking you home”, he puts his brother’s arm around his shoulder and pulls him up. Glen’s bulging strong body makes pulling him up to become a real struggle. Adrian can only do little steps, therefore the two of them can move forward.
At the front of the police station, stands the information desk. The policeman blocks their way and lets the brothers sign a few papers before they can leave. “Crap!”, Glen said, out of the agony he’s been in today, all he desires is to go back home.
“We won’t be going home if we don’t sing this”, Adrian whispered in his brother’s ears.
Glen gave him a quick glare. He picks up the pen, and signs on the paper, “Can we leave now”, he uttered in an irritable voice.
“Yes, sir, thank you for your cooperation”, the policeman on the desk told them.
Glen dashes outside right after he heard the signal. Adrian follows him, when all of a sudden the policeman on the desk calls him, “Is that your brother?”, he asked and Adrian nodded, “Well, keep an eye on him, he’s a little brat no wonder he got into trouble”, the policeman added.
“He’s always like that when he drinks”, Adrian chuckles.
“Is he an alcoholic?”,
“No, sir, it is the first time, he becomes drunk”, Adrian said, which made the policeman raise one of his eyebrows, “What do you mean?”,
“Oh, I mean even a couple of shots, he’ll got worse, but he never went drunk like now”, Adrian clarifies the situation.
“I see”, the policeman nods, “You can go now”.
Adrian gave him a quick smile and thank you, then follows his brother outside.
