A New Case

2104 Words
In a dark alleyway, on the deep silent night, a young woman runs at the side of the street in an unstoppable momentum for almost ten minutes. She bolted at the greatest lengths she could, with the help of her skinny long legs, yet she still can’t escape the sharp needles of pain pressing on her heavy thighs. The woman turned her head around for a second and a shadow figure of a tall man in his black hood chases her. The dim blinks of the street light, half-blind her eyes, thus the woman lost her consciousness on her path. Endless void of vague duskiness spirals in front of her. The woman was about to collapse on the floor, but she told herself, if she falls down, she can never get up. It was her legs who will save her at the moment, she trusts them to take her the farthest she could. However, every time her foot strikes the ground, it produces a loud crunch, becomes a barrier on the massive footsteps of the man. When she passes by a huge dumpster the scent of wet garbage then tickles her nose and rumbles her stomach. The woman takes a few steps more away from the smell before she pauses. She takes a deep breath, and the reality snaps in her mind. Her eyes widen, on a tall figure of the man, now stands a few inches away from her, yet he still couldn’t see his face. The post beside gleams and flashes at her, so the man steps both of his feet forward, to give a half shade of light to his muscular body. The woman glares at him and raises both of her arms and closes her fist. “Who are you?”, she shouted at the man. He responded with a loud sneer before he pulls out his gun. “You have to go” he spoke, and a deafening bang slams. Olivia Clark rises up from her bed at once, and gasps for some air. Her chest moves up and down when she tries to catch her breath. She then puts her hand on her chest and grasps the heavy beats of her heart. “Oh my…”, Olivia sighs, with her eyes close. The images of the man from her dreams are still vivid in her mind. She shakes her head and looks at the digital clock at her side. It was seven in the morning, Olivia woke up five minutes before her alarm rings. She grunted upon the realization. Olivia kicks her blanket because she could have used those five minutes for more sleep, however, she has no choice since all of her senses were fully awaken. Olivia first fixes her bed before she goes outside for a thirty-minute jog. When she goes back to her apartment house, lies on her couch for twenty minutes then takes a bath. She goes to the kitchen and prepared two pieces of french toast and a cup of coffee, which is enough to fuel up her energy for the day. After she completes her routine, Olivia goes into her car and drove to her work. It usually takes her fifteen minutes to arrive, but because of the insane line of vehicles in front, her journey would be double the time. The sight of piles of cars, smoke, and endless unsynchronized beeps of car horns, can crush a person’s day into pieces, and Olivia was one of them. For the past five years, she rides towards the exact same road, the peak of her patience always empties out. She would throw profanities, even if she has an idea, no one can hear her. Even her blood was about to burst on the insanities in the road, she doesn’t want to use her sharp words and stabbed someone with them, therefore she turns on pop music so loud it produces vibration throughout her car. At the glitters of the center of the city resides a 3-foot story mansion-like city hall. The big golden bell at the top of it rings whenever noon strikes. The clangs of the metal bring a little relief to all the workers around the area. They know it is time to have a nice lunch along with their friends. The crossroads start to get crowded with people at their formal attires. Some of them walk alone and a lot of them gather in groups. Olivia joins the masses on the road with a cup of coffee in her hand. Her black necktie tacked in, behind her dark blue coat, a black service cap and a mini golden badge sits in the top of her chest, caught bypassers' eyes. Their glances, make Olivia sometimes question herself if the people were terrified of the police or they had never seen one. She smirks at herself and threw the question in the back of her mind. It is better to turn blind towards them. Two establishments away from the city hall lies the most extensive police office in the city. Olivia enters its two glass automatic door, when a blonde, short policewoman at the reception stares at her. She pauses for a second before she eventually approach her. “Where have you been?”, the policewoman pulled a straight face. “I was busy”, Olivia raises one of her eyebrows “The chief is waiting for you”, the policewoman whispered Olivia’s eyes widen, a quick shiver travels on her spine. The chief never called her throughout her entire career at the department. Her mind begins to spiral into scenarios she can encounter. She glances at the policewoman once more, then dashes through the chief’s office. The wooden door of the office of the chief was opened widely. Olivia was right behind its shadows. She first took a deep breath and steps her feet forward, to show up an appearance in front of the office. “Inspector Sparks!”, a mustached bald man, sits at the middle of the table in the office. Olivia greeted her with a warm smile and addressed the man chief. The chief offered her to sit down beside a tall slender man in a police uniform. Olivia gave him a quick grin and the man do the same to her. “Lieutenant Jarvis and I talked earlier, he already told me why you were absent ”, the chief told them. Olivia has her full ears on the man, while her heart still beats harder than usual. “Do you mind?”, the chief looks at Lt. Jarvis, “I will lead the case of mayor Sotto’s murder, I need you to assist me”, Jarvis told her. Olivia didn’t utter a single word, it would be an honor to join this investigation, but she was not prepared for this huge task, “I..uh..sure”, she nods, “You don’t sound so sure”, the chief stares at her expressionless face “I do…”, Olivia clears her throat “It was settled then!”, the chief stands up. and the two of them did the same. “I believe in you two”, the chief shows his hand, Olivia and Lt. Jarvis holds and shook it. When the meeting was done, Jarvis invited her to his office. The two of them walked in silence in the corridors of the police station. They can’t discuss the case in public, therefore they were left with nothing to talk about. Olivia is weirded on the situation, she then blames herself for it. Jarvis is still her boss, she understands she must not speak silly things in his presence, but she couldn’t take the awkwardness any longer and started the conversation. “How’s your family sir?”, she asked out of nowhere and ended up with regret right away. Above all the topics, why did she choose casual talk? But then Jarvis looks at her, and said “They were fine”. Olivia falls into relief, she didn’t make her boss irritated. At the exact moment the elevator dings and opens. Olivia followed Jarvis, inside his room. The piles of folders sit on his desk with the crumpled papers. “Sorry for this”, Jarvis picks up all the stuff on his desk and sets it aside in his drawer. Olivia locks the door next to her, and said, “Have you started the search and investigation?”, “We did, this case is a tricky one”, Jarvis spoke, then asked her to take a seat first and she did. “The murderer left no trace but a .45 ACP cartridge, and have used an M1911”, he told her, “For convenience,” she added. Jarvis nodded and picks up the folder he left at his desk and handed it to her. Olivia opened it and paper’s of different people’s profiles was inside “An interrogation must be conducted right away, we have nothing but their words”, Olivia looks at him for a split second then back to the paper. She reads the information written on the paper. “Don’t we have footage?”, she asked him, and Jarvis shakes his head. “It was deleted, the timeframe the incident happened went missing”, he said Olivia sighs, “The suspect must have planned it in detail”, “Don’t worry, new evidence might show up, the forensics now investigates the body and the place” Olivia then asked him about his plans and when they can start to work, Jarvis answered in a firm manner, “Tomorrow”, his stare pierces into her eyes. Olivia nodded her head once she didn’t expect he will be so serious. Jarvis sits on his chair and picks up a piece of gum from his drawer and placed it in his mouth, “Come with me tomorrow, I will show you the crime scene”, the words from his mouth was almost inaudible because of the loud munches, but afterwards, the two were left in the room for almost an hour without any sound, outside its doors. The sun sets down and the moon shines in the night sky, Olivia was still in her office room, while her head rests on her palm. The room was dead silent even at the corridors at the police station. If a marble drops it will echo throughout the establishment. Her mind unrests, because of the situation she might face in her new mission. Within five years of her career, Olivia handled a variety of cases from theft, felony, fraud, and even murder, but nothing is more dangerous than this case. The moments she agreed she knew a sharp huge blade awaits above her neck, and in one wrong move, can seal her fate. However, Olivia recalls her promises to herself and the reason she chose this profession in the first place. Truth is elusive, the more you chase it, the more it will run from you. Olivia understands the moment this investigation begins, she must do her best not to stir up the pool of sharks, or else all of her and Jarvis’s efforts end in disaster. Olivia glances at the clock, as its hands point at eight. “Already?” she rubs both of her eyes, the time didn’t change. She picked up her phone from her bag and turn it on, the clock didn’t lie to her, it was now eight in the evening. Olivia grabs her keys, phone and packed them up in her bag, however, her phone chirps, and a message shows up on her screen, Olivia turned it off instead. She then clears up the pile of folders on her desk and placed it on the left side. Out of nowhere a folder slips and the paper inside scatters throughout the floor. Olivia produced a loud sigh and collected it right away since she has no choice, but then it is the folder of information on the people they placed in suspicion. “Seriously?”, she uttered in frustration, Olivia forgot she took out the folder anymore and forgot to place it back when her eyes starts to become heavy. A name in a resume format caught Olivia’s attention, her eyes narrows at the name of the man for about a little while. Glen Hopkins happened to be on the list. “I think I heard this name before”, she whispered, but eventually placed the paper, in the folder.
